The silence that crashes down in the wake of his shout is louder and heavier than any sound I have ever heard. Enzo is breathing as if he has just run a marathon, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with the shock of his own admission. Take you away from me too.
"Too?" I whisper, the single word fragile and sharp, hanging in the charged space between us.
In that instant, all the fight drains out of me, replaced by a cold, sharp understanding that slices right to my core. This is not about simple disapproval of my career. This is not about jealousy or control. This is about... history. A pain so profound and personal that he has buried it deep, in a place where even I, the person closest to him now, have not been able to see it.
