Cane's POV
My head started to spin. It felt like the room was turning.
Tiffany and Stephanie were the two likely suspects.
"Are you telling me," I asked, my voice tight and angry, "that one of them did this? That my wife or her sister killed that teacher?"
"No, boss," Armstrong said quickly. "That is not what I am saying. I am telling you that someone paid that teacher. Someone gave her money to mess with your kids. Mrs Cane found out but she didn't kill her."
I gripped the phone so hard I thought the plastic might crack. "How can you be so sure Stephanie didn't do it?" I asked.
"Because," Armstrong said, "the second the car hit the teacher, Mrs. Cane did not run away. She did not scream. She ran to her own car. And she chased it. She went after the car that did it."
I swallowed hard. My throat felt very dry.
