Stephanie's POV
I saw him and everything inside me froze.
Just for a second. I didn't expect to see anyone especially not Cane standing there like he just walked out of my nightmares.
For one second I couldn't breathe. My mind flew in different directions thinking of how I was going to explain this to him.
My hands were still wet with blood. My mask was hanging under my arm. My legs were shaking from running and fighting.
Then something inside me went hard. Cold. Like a door slamming shut. I didn't owe him any bloody explanation.
I started walking straight past him like he was a stranger. My boots crunched on the gravel. My hands still smelled like blood and gunpowder. My heart was banging so loud I could hear it in my ears.
When I was almost shoulder-to-shoulder with him I muttered, "I handled it."
That was all he was getting. Nothing more. I took one more step. I was expecting him to do something and he didn't disappoint me.
