She sighed and scooted over, lifting the blanket in a silent invitation. He hesitated only a second before sliding into bed beside her, the mattress dipping under his larger frame. The moment he settled, instinct overruled manners. He slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her gently against him.
"Comfy?" she murmured.
"Very…" he whispered back, surprising himself with his honesty. Then, after a pause, he added, "If you weren't human, I would have thought you were my mate."
"Why would you think that?" Sera asked.
Eric was staring at the ceiling, but his jaw flexed, betraying the conflict beneath his calm. "Because this is weird. Me, here, wanting you."
Her brows furrowed. "Are you saying you don't usually get intimate with women?"
He snorted. "Oh I fuck a lot of women, don't get me wrong. Every damsel wants to be in my bed."
The words shouldn't have stung, but they did. A sharp pinch in her ribcage.
