===============================

Raynare barely had time to land beside Dohnaseek before the air behind her suddenly screamed.

A massive arrow made of condensed pink mana came crashing down like a missile.

The impact sent a violent shockwave across the area, shattering the ground beneath Dohnaseek and blasting him backward. Dust and debris exploded into the air, and the fallen angel slammed into the pavement hard enough to crack it.

Dohnaseek coughed violently, his coat torn and his wings trembling as he struggled to rise.

Raynare clicked her tongue in irritation, her violet eyes narrowing as she looked toward the direction the arrow had come from.

"Tch… that fairy brat…"

Issei took a shaky step forward, glaring at her despite the fear in his eyes. "Raynare…!"

Raynare didn't bother responding.

In a blur of movement, she shot forward and slashed her light spear across Issei's side.

"GAH—!!"

Issei's body jerked, pain ripping through him as he dropped to one knee, clutching the wound with a shaking hand.

Asia screamed. "Issei!!"

Raynare grabbed Asia by the wrist and yanked her back.

"Time to go," Raynare hissed, wings spreading wide. Her voice was sharp and frantic now, not playful like before. "Hurry up, Dohnaseek! That fairy brat is going to kill you!"

Dohnaseek gritted his teeth, still trying to stand but Raynare didn't bother to wait for him.

She shot into the sky, dragging Asia with her, disappearing into the clouds before Dohnaseek could even take a step.

"ASIA!!" Issei shouted, reaching out helplessly.

But they were already gone.

A second later, Sun Jing dropped from above and landed hard in front of Dohnaseek. Her hood was slightly down now, blonde hair messy from the speed of her descent, and her magenta-red eyes were locked onto him.

"…Shit," Sun Jing muttered under her breath. "She took Asia…"

Issei was breathing heavily, his hands shaking as blood seeped through his fingers. He clenched his teeth so hard it looked like they might crack.

"Fuck…" he hissed, voice breaking. "I can't believe I failed… again!"

Sun Jing didn't respond right away. Her jaw tightened as she turned back toward Dohnaseek.

The fallen angel was staggering, barely able to keep himself upright. His wings twitched violently as he tried to back away, his expression twisting between fear and desperation.

He pushed off the ground, as he tried to fly into the air but he didn't get far.

Sun Jing shot forward and grabbed his ankle mid-lift, yanking him down with brutal force. Dohnaseek slammed back into the ground with a painful grunt, the impact sending cracks spiderwebbing across the pavement.

A glowing blue notification appeared in Sun Jing's vision.

[New Main Quest]

1. Kill Dohnaseek

2. Save Asia Argento

Sun Jing stared down at him coldly, her grip tight around his leg.

"You're not getting away," she said, voice calm but dangerous. "You're going to tell me everything you know—where they're taking her, why you're after her, and who's behind this."

Dohnaseek coughed and forced a weak smile, his eyes filled with hatred.

"I'd rather die."

He raised his light spear, aiming straight for her chest.

With one hand still holding his ankle, Sun Jing pulled Wado Ichimonji from her inventory with the other.

The katana appeared instantly in her grip. She blocked the spear effortlessly, the force of the impact sending sparks flying.

Dohnaseek's eyes widened. 'No...'

Sun Jing slowly released his ankle and stepped back, rolling her shoulder like she was loosening up before a warm-up match.

"That's fine," she said flatly. "I'll just kill you here and now."

She placed her hand on the hilt.

A sharp pressure filled the space between them, like the air itself was holding its breath.

"Ittoryu Iai:…" She took one step forward. "…Shishi Sonson."

For a split second, it looked like she didn't even move.

She passed him in a blur too fast for the human eye to track and then the sound followed after.

SHNK.

Sun Jing stopped behind him and slid Wado back into its sheath.

Dohnaseek stood frozen, his spear slipping from his hand. His eyes went wide and blood sprayed out in a clean line across his chest.

His body collapsed forward, lifeless, hitting the ground with a dull thud.

Sun Jing turned away from the corpse without a second glance and walked back toward Issei.

Issei was still kneeling, breathing hard, face pale. He tried to stand, but his legs shook violently and he nearly fell over.

Sun Jing caught him immediately.

"Easy," she muttered, supporting him.

Issei clenched his teeth, humiliated and furious. "Asia… they took her…"

"I know," Sun Jing said.

She shifted him so his arm was over her shoulder, then lifted him fully, carrying him as if he weighed nothing.

Issei's eyes widened slightly. "H-hey… I can walk—"

"No, you can't," Sun Jing said bluntly. "You'll bleed out before you make it ten steps."

Issei didn't argue after that. He just looked away, ashamed.

Sun Jing carried Issei away, heading straight for the Occult Research Club.

Sun Jing slowed as the old school building came into view, Issei's weight resting against her shoulder. The place looked quiet from the outside, almost peaceful, which felt completely wrong considering what had just happened.

"You really didn't need to help me, you know…" Issei muttered after a moment, his voice low.

Sun Jing shot him a sideways look. "Oh good grief." She adjusted her grip on him. "Quit it. I helped you because I wanted to—and because it was the right thing to do. Besides…" She paused just long enough to make him nervous. "We're friends, aren't we?"

Issei blinked, then gave a small, genuine smile. "I… yeah. We are friends."

Inside the ORC clubhouse, Sun Jing carefully lowered Issei onto the couch and finally let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. She glanced around the room, relieved to see everyone there—except Rias.

"Sorry to intrude like this," she said, straightening up. "But I don't exactly have the ability to heal people."

Koneko tilted her head, staring at Issei's battered state. "Geez. What the hell happened to the pervert?"

Issei groaned and turned his face into the couch cushion, clearly deciding silence was the better option.

The next day, after school, the atmosphere in the ORC was tense.

Rias stood in front of Issei, without warning, she slapped him across the face. Not hard enough to injure him, but more than enough to get her point across.

"Let me try one more time," Rias said coldly. "If I say 'don't,' you don't. You have to forget about Asia. You are a member of the Gremory Family now."

Issei clenched his fists. "Fine…" he muttered. Then he looked up, eyes burning with defiance. "Then maybe it's time you released me from your household. Because I refuse to just let her go."

"I'm sorry," Rias replied, her tone firm. "But I can't do that."

"Of course not," Issei snapped. "I'm your precious pawn. Can't do without your most important piece, can you?!"

"That's enough, Issei!" Rias raised her voice, then took a steadying breath. "Pawns are important. They aren't the weakest piece in the game by any means."

Issei frowned. "You told me before… that your evil pieces have the same attributes as their chess counterparts."

"Yes," Rias said. "And in this game, a pawn can do quite a bit. If a pawn advances deep enough into enemy territory, it can be promoted into any other piece except the King."

"So… does that mean I can eventually have the same powers as everyone else?"

"Yes," Rias answered. "But only if I declare the area enemy territory. For example…" Her gaze sharpened. "The fallen angels' church."

"And about your Sacred Gear," Rias continued. "It works in direct correlation with your feelings. The stronger your emotions, the stronger your Sacred Gear becomes."

Issei looked down at his left arm, quiet now, processing her words.

The door opens, and Akeno stepped inside with Sun Jing following behind her.

"Sorry we're late," Akeno said cheerfully. "I brought her, just like you asked."

"Good," Rias replied. She turned toward Sun Jing and, without warning, grabbed her face with both hands, squishing her cheeks.

"Now," Rias said with a forced smile, irritation clearly leaking through, "you killed the fallen angel named Dohnaseek yesterday, correct?"

"Uh… yeah?" Sun Jing managed through compressed cheeks. "Why? And why do you look so irritated?"

"Because," Rias said sweetly, "I am irritated. Now… where is the body?"

"…Where I left it…?" Sun Jing said slowly.

Rias's smile twitched. "So you left a fallen angel corpse in a public area where any normal human could find it?"

"I—I was gonna go get it—" Sun Jing started, already sweating.
