Chapter 33 - Off the bench

The dressing room gradually fell silent.

The laughter and conversations that had filled the room only minutes earlier disappeared, replaced by complete concentration.

Every player had entered his own world.

Some tightened the laces on their boots for one last time.

Others adjusted their shin guards or wrapped athletic tape around their wrists.

The equipment staff made their final checks, ensuring every player had everything needed before kickoff.

The smell of freshly applied liniment mixed with the scent of new jerseys and polished boots.

Outside the walls, the supporters were already making themselves heard.

The chants echoed through the corridors beneath Allianz Parque.

Each roar reminded the players that more than forty thousand Palmeiras supporters were waiting.

Abel Ferreira stood in front of the dressing room.

There was no shouting.

No dramatic speech.

His voice remained calm, just as it had throughout preseason.

He looked around the room, making eye contact with every player.

"Gentlemen," he began, "today isn't the day we win the league."

The players listened carefully.

"But it can be the day we begin winning it."

He paused.

"We've worked for months to prepare for this moment. Trust yourselves. Trust your teammates."

He pointed toward the tactical board.

"Botafogo are organized. They'll defend well, they'll press at the right moments, and they'll punish mistakes if we lose concentration."

He tapped the magnetic board.

"So stay patient."

"We don't force the game."

"We create it."

His eyes moved toward the substitutes.

"And everyone here has a role."

He looked directly at Gabriel Silver.

"You may start on the bench today."

Gabriel nodded.

"But matches are rarely won by the first eleven alone."

A slight smile crossed Abel's face.

"Stay ready."

"I will, Mister."

Abel clapped once.

"Vamos."

The entire dressing room answered together.

"PALMEIRAS!"

The shout echoed down the tunnel.

Moments later, the players lined up behind the referees.

The match officials walked ahead carrying the official league ball.

Behind them came Palmeiras' starting eleven.

Gabriel walked behind the starters alongside the other substitutes before peeling away toward the technical area.

As he stepped out of the tunnel, bright floodlights instantly filled his vision.

For a brief second, he had to blink.

Then everything came into focus.

Allianz Parque.

A sea of green stretched in every direction.

Thousands of supporters stood waving enormous flags.

Green and white scarves covered entire sections of the stadium.

Drums pounded endlessly.

Smoke from pre-match celebrations drifted through the night air.

The atmosphere was unlike anything Gabriel had experienced before.

He had played in packed stadiums with Coritiba.

But this felt different.

This felt enormous.

The roar from the crowd rolled across the pitch like thunder.

The television cameras immediately found him.

One camera tracked him from the tunnel entrance all the way toward the Palmeiras bench.

Another zoomed in as he looked around the stadium.

Inside television studios across Brazil, viewers were introduced once again to Palmeiras' newest signing.

"There he is," the lead commentator said.

"Gabriel Silver. Sixteen years old. Signed from Coritiba after an outstanding campaign despite the club's difficult season."

His co-commentator continued.

"He starts among the substitutes this evening, but make no mistake, Palmeiras supporters have been waiting eagerly to see him in green."

"Abel Ferreira has chosen experience for today's starting lineup against Botafogo, and that's understandable."

"Botafogo have become one of the strongest and most consistent teams in Brazilian football over the last few seasons.

They're difficult to break down, dangerous on the counterattack, and they rarely make life easy for opponents."

"Exactly," the lead commentator replied.

"If this match remains tight, don't be surprised if Gabriel Silver becomes an option later tonight.

He's creative, fearless, and comfortable receiving the ball between defensive lines. Sometimes that's exactly what's needed to unlock a stubborn defence."

The cameras briefly switched to the Botafogo players completing their final warm-up.

Several Palmeiras supporters whistled loudly as their opponents appeared on the giant screen.

Botafogo looked relaxed.

Focused.

Their players exchanged short passes while their coaching staff observed quietly from the touchline.

This promised to be a fascinating contest.

Gabriel acknowledged the home supporters with a small wave before taking his seat on the bench.

He wasn't disappointed.

Of course he wanted to play.

Every footballer wanted to start.

But he respected the coach's decision.

His opportunity would come.

Until then, he would observe.

He watched the movement of Palmeiras during the final warm-up.

He watched how Botafogo positioned themselves without the ball.

Every detail mattered.

Soon the giant screens displayed the confirmed starting lineups.

Palmeiras (4-2-3-1)

Goalkeeper: Weverton.

Defenders: Marcos Rocha, Gustavo Gómez (Captain), Murilo, Joaquín Piquerez.

Midfielders: Richard Ríos, Aníbal Moreno.

Attacking Midfielders: Facundo Torres, Andreas Pereira, Raphael Veiga.

Striker: José Manuel López.

The substitutes followed, with Gabriel Silver's name receiving one of the loudest cheers inside the stadium.

The announcer then introduced Botafogo's starting eleven.

Their supporters, gathered in the away section high behind one goal, answered with chants of their own.

For a few moments the stadium became a contest of noise.

Green and white from one side.

Black and white from the other.

The captains walked toward the center circle.

Gustavo Gómez greeted Botafogo's captain before shaking hands with the referee.

The coin was tossed.

Palmeiras would kick off attacking the south end in the first half.

The referee checked with both assistant referees.

He looked at his watch.

Then…

The whistle sounded.

The 2025 league season had officially begun.

Palmeiras immediately took control of possession.

Richard Ríos dropped deep to receive the first pass before switching play toward Marcos Rocha.

Botafogo responded exactly as expected.

They pressed aggressively without overcommitting.

Every passing lane seemed carefully covered.

Palmeiras circulated possession patiently.

The home supporters applauded every successful sequence of passes.

Abel Ferreira stood near the touchline, occasionally pointing toward open spaces.

"Move it quicker!"

The opening minutes were tense.

Neither side wanted to make the first mistake.

In the seventh minute, Palmeiras created the first real opportunity.

Raphael Veiga spotted Facundo Torres making a clever run into space.

The pass arrived perfectly.

Facundo controlled beautifully before driving directly at the Botafogo full-back.

One quick touch.

Another.

He skipped past his marker before cutting inside onto his stronger foot.

The crowd rose together.

Facundo curled his effort toward the far corner.

For a split second it looked destined for the net.

Instead, the Botafogo goalkeeper flew across his goal and pushed the ball around the post with an outstanding save.

The stadium applauded loudly.

"What a save!" shouted the television commentator.

"That was heading into the top corner."

From the resulting corner, Raphael Veiga delivered an inviting cross.

Murilo climbed above everyone.

His powerful header flashed narrowly over the crossbar.

Hands immediately went onto heads around Allianz Parque.

"So close."

Abel clapped encouragingly.

"That's it!"

"Keep asking questions."

Botafogo slowly settled into the match.

They became more comfortable in possession.

Instead of forcing attacks, they patiently waited for Palmeiras to leave spaces behind.

Their strategy nearly worked in the nineteenth minute.

A quick interception in midfield released Botafogo into a dangerous counterattack.

Three black-and-white shirts surged forward.

One perfectly weighted through ball split Palmeiras' defence.

The Botafogo striker burst through on goal.

The stadium suddenly fell silent.

Weverton reacted instantly.

He raced off his line.

The striker tried to place his finish into the bottom corner.

Weverton spread himself brilliantly and blocked the effort with his legs.

The rebound bounced dangerously inside the penalty area before Gustavo Gómez reacted first, clearing it into the stands.

The Palmeiras supporters erupted.

"What a save from Weverton!" the commentator shouted.

"That is world-class goalkeeping."

His partner added,

"Botafogo showed exactly why they're such a dangerous team.

They absorbed pressure before striking with incredible speed."

The match became increasingly physical.

Richard Ríos and Aníbal Moreno battled fiercely in midfield.

Every loose ball produced another challenge.

The referee spoke to several players after a series of strong tackles but kept his cards in his pocket.

On the Palmeiras bench, Gabriel remained fully engaged.

He watched Botafogo's midfield shift from side to side whenever Palmeiras switched play.

He noticed small spaces beginning to appear behind their defensive midfielders.

He quietly stored those observations away.

If he entered later…

Those spaces might become important.

Around the half-hour mark Palmeiras began dominating possession again.

Raphael Veiga drifted intelligently between the lines.

Andreas Pereira linked play smoothly.

Facundo Torres repeatedly stretched Botafogo's defence with clever movement down the flank.

One flowing move brought the crowd to its feet.

Thirty-one passes.

Patient.

Controlled.

Beautiful.

Eventually Marcos Rocha delivered an early cross into the area.

José Manuel López attacked it brilliantly.

His header beat the goalkeeper.

The stadium exploded.

Supporters leapt into the air.

Scarves flew everywhere.

Players celebrated.

But only briefly.

The assistant referee had already raised his flag.

Offside.

The celebrations stopped almost immediately.

The giant screens replayed the move.

López had moved a fraction too early.

The decision was correct.

The score remained goalless.

Abel simply applauded.

"The movement was right."

"We'll get another chance."

Botafogo responded confidently.

Instead of panicking, they slowed the match down.

They passed patiently through midfield, frustrating the home supporters.

Every successful tackle received loud cheers from the away section.

The atmosphere remained electric.

Neither group of supporters stopped singing.

As halftime approached, Palmeiras increased the pressure once more.

Facundo Torres combined beautifully with Piquerez before delivering another dangerous cross.

This time the Botafogo defenders managed to clear only as far as Raphael Veiga.

The midfielder controlled with his first touch.

Without hesitation, he struck the ball from almost thirty metres.

The effort dipped violently toward goal.

Once again the Botafogo goalkeeper produced an outstanding save, tipping the ball over the crossbar.

The crowd applauded despite their frustration.

"He's keeping Botafogo alive," the commentator observed.

"Without him Palmeiras might already have two goals."

The final minutes became increasingly tense.

Botafogo threatened once more from a free kick.

The cross found one of their centre-backs, whose header drifted just wide of the post.

Several Palmeiras supporters exhaled in relief.

Abel glanced briefly toward his bench.

His coaching staff quietly discussed possible changes.

Gabriel noticed.

He remained calm.

No matter when the opportunity arrived, he intended to be ready.

The fourth official indicated one minute of added time.

Palmeiras pushed forward once more.

Richard Ríos won possession in midfield before feeding Andreas Pereira.

The attacking midfielder slipped a clever pass toward Facundo Torres inside the penalty area.

Facundo fired first time.

A Botafogo defender threw himself into the shot.

The ball deflected behind for another corner.

Raphael Veiga hurried across to take it.

The delivery swung dangerously into the six-yard box.

Chaos followed.

Bodies challenged.

The goalkeeper punched clear.

Before Palmeiras could recycle possession, the referee lifted the whistle to his mouth.

Half-time.

The players slowly walked toward the tunnel.

Palmeiras had controlled much of the game.

Botafogo had defended with discipline and remained dangerous on the break.

Neither side had found the breakthrough.

The scoreboard above Allianz Parque read:

Palmeiras 0–0 Botafogo.

As Gabriel followed the substitutes back toward the dressing room, he took one last glance at the pitch.

The match felt perfectly balanced.

One moment of quality.

One moment of courage.

That might be all it would take to decide the opening game of the season.

And somewhere deep inside, Gabriel Silver felt that his chance was getting closer.
