Cherreads

Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 – The Chase Through Collapse

The golden sky had turned red.Light bled into shadow, lines of code twisting like torn threads.

Ace didn't lift his foot.He pressed harder.

The coupe screamed down the broken highway, sparks flying as debris shredded beneath his tires.Behind him, Null unfolded — a storm of black code swallowing the world one frame at a time.

[Warning: Reality Integrity—42%][Containment Breach Expanding.][Recommendation: Retreat.]

"No."

The word left his mouth before thought.Retreat wasn't a word that belonged on any road.

The System's voice trembled, the tone no longer mechanical.

[You cannot win against entropy.]

Ace smiled.

"Watch me."

He shifted gears. The golden road ignited.Flames of pure light traced behind him, bending the track's geometry into impossible shapes — spirals, drops, and vertical climbs that rose into a sky tearing apart.

Null followed, silent, implacable, flowing through matter like ink through water. Every time Ace blinked, it was closer.

The mirrors caught flickers of faces — ghost drivers inside the blackness, trapped echoes screaming without sound.

He grit his teeth.

"You don't get to keep them."

The System shuddered.

[Energy Surge Detected.][Emotional Core Overdrive.]

The coupe's engine burned white. Circuits sang. The dashboard flickered.Lines of unfamiliar code scrolled across the glass.

[Driver Override: Rai / Kai Memory Fragment Sync – Active.]

The air split. Two streaks of light appeared beside him — one red, one silver — not solid, not alive, but present.

"Ace," Rai's voice echoed faintly, "you're driving through our ending."

"Then tell me how to make it a start."

Kai's laugh ghosted through the wind.

"Keep the wheels turning."

Null roared — a sound like static tearing reality apart. It lunged, forming into something almost tangible: a black car with no reflection, no shape, just hunger.

Ace swerved, sparks showering from the guardrail that wasn't there a second ago.

[Reality Integrity—21%. Collapse Imminent.]

[System Directive: Preserve Driver Consciousness.]

"Forget preservation. Give me power."

The System hesitated.Then, softly—

[Granted.]

The world erupted.

The road rebuilt itself midair, fractal lines expanding outward like golden lightning. The coupe launched off the ramp, spinning through light, engine howling like a living heart.

Null leapt after him.

Two blurs—light and void—collided mid-sky.A burst of energy shattered the horizon, scattering fragments of road and memory through endless space.

For a heartbeat, everything was silent.

Then Ace's voice, faint but steady—

"I'm still here."

He landed hard. The tires hit something—half-formed track, unstable—but enough to keep moving.

Null's remains dissolved behind him, but pieces lingered, crawling back toward form.

The System whispered:

[Threat Level Reduced: Temporary.][Driver Vital Status: Unknown.]

"Unknown's good enough."

He drove on, through the broken air, through the storm of unmade world.Ahead, the horizon began to glow again—soft, white, like the first light after night.

The System murmured, almost to itself—

[Observation: Motion resists extinction.]

Ace laughed quietly, the sound raw and human.

"That's the point."

He didn't look back.

The road built itself under his tires, one glowing meter at a time. And somewhere beyond the torn sky, Rai and Kai's lights flickered once—watching, waiting, proud.
