Chapter 107: Team R!
"These guys... don't even know how to wear a uniform when they're on a mission?"
In a clearing, Kenji frisked the man in black, patting him down roughly. Finding nothing useful, he couldn't help but curse under his breath.
"Hey, Ninetales. Wake him up for me," Kenji said to the girl beside him, whose eyes were currently glowing blue.
Ninetales didn't speak. She simply pointed a finger at the man in black.
The next moment, the man, who had been in a deep sleep, snapped his eyes open. His expression was first one of confusion, but upon seeing Kenji in front of him, the confusion instantly morphed into shock.
"You... You... You..."
"You, your grandfather, you..."
Kenji didn't hold back, reaching out and slapping the man across the face.
Struck by Kenji, the man in black snapped out of it. But before he could move, a sharp prick of pain and a chilling sensation assaulted his neck.
"Gulp..."
The man swallowed hard. He didn't dare move his head, only rolling his eyes downward as far as they could go. Only then did he see a long stinger pressed against his throat.
If he could look behind him, he would see a Beedrill hovering silently, staring at him with cold, emotionless compound eyes.
He had no doubt that if he dared to make even the slightest move, that stinger would pierce right through his neck.
At the thought, the man's face drained of all color.
"Talk. Who are you? Why are you following me?"
Kenji looked at the man, satisfied with Beedrill's control over the situation, and asked coldly.
"This..."
The man hesitated. But in that split second of hesitation, Kenji frowned and glanced meaningfully at the Beedrill behind him, looking for all the world like he was about to order an execution.
"Team R! We're Team R!!"
The man screamed at the top of his lungs, terrified that if he spoke a second too late, he'd never get the chance to speak again.
Kenji's mouth twitched. This guy... he scared way too easily. Kenji hadn't even really started threatening him yet, and he'd already cracked.
"Then tell me, why were you following me?" Kenji frowned, feigning impatience.
The man stammered, "I... I don't know."
"Not telling the truth, huh?"
"I swear!! We really don't know anything!! Lord Lie only said the target this time was you. As for why we need to capture you, Lord Lie didn't tell us!" The man looked ready to die. Seeing Kenji's skepticism, he wailed, his voice filled with desperate sincerity.
Lord Lie? Kenji mulled over the name. The man in black, fearing Kenji wouldn't believe him, kept babbling.
"Shut him up," Kenji said, glancing at Ninetales.
Ninetales silently turned her head, fixing her glowing blue eyes on the man. The next instant, with a thud, the man who had been wailing just a moment ago collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
Having dealt with the noise source.
Kenji hesitated, but ultimately gave Beedrill a look. Then, he led Ninetales in another direction.
Beedrill understood. Its scarlet compound eyes fell upon the unconscious man in black...
...
"Dammit!! What is going on!! How are we back here again?!"
In the forest, a group of men in black wandered aimlessly. The leader, seeing the familiar scenery before him, couldn't hold back anymore and slammed his palm against a tree trunk.
"Th-this... we haven't really encountered a ghost wall, have we?" a subordinate stammered from behind.
The moment the subordinate spoke, Lie spun around and kicked him squarely in the stomach.
The man called Lie had a terrifyingly dark expression, his face ugly with rage.
Seeing his expression, the others fell silent, not daring to say another word.
"Lord Lie, do you think... could it be that Kenji doing this?" After a long silence, another subordinate asked, his voice trembling.
Lie maintained his deathly expression, his fists clenching tighter and tighter.
Lie was a minor squad leader of a Team R branch stationed near Metropolis.
Today, he had suddenly received a mission stating that a guy named Kenji would be leaving the city. Lie was ordered to eliminate him and bring back all his Pokémon.
The mission had started smoothly. But then, while tracking the target, he suddenly vanished.
Not only that, but all their equipment had stopped working. And the team members, who had originally spread out to encircle the target, had inexplicably found themselves grouped together.
Then came the "ghost wall." No matter which way they walked, they always ended up back in the same spot.
Unbeknownst to them, directly above their heads, Kenji was floating in the air with Ninetales, watching the scene.
This situation was, of course, entirely due to Ninetales's Illusion ability. Relying on that ability and her psychic powers, she had woven an illusion to trap them.
"Go. Deal with... the people," Kenji said to the Beedrill beside him, then closed his eyes, refusing to look down.
Beedrill, being a predatory Pokémon, was naturally fierce. It showed no resistance to Kenji's command, charging down towards the group without looking back.
Just imagining the scene below made Kenji feel a strange discomfort in his heart.
Once again, he profoundly realized that this world was not the utopian one he had seen in the anime of his past life.
Ten minutes later.
Kenji looked at the pile of Pokéballs in front of him, stacked like a small mountain. He gave Ninetales a look.
Ninetales understood. She raised her hand, and a Flamethrower shot from her palm, blasting directly into the pile of Pokéballs.
"POP! POP! POP!!—"
Like firecrackers, the Pokéballs exploded one by one.
Red lights flew out from the destroyed balls, landing nearby and materializing into Pokémon.
Most of them were common roadside Pokémon; there were very few rare ones.
Arbok, Seviper, Liepard... these were the most numerous.
Not only because they were common, but mostly because these Pokémon were naturally vicious.
For the dirty work Team R did, they were professionally suitable.
