Chapter 109: Scraggy
What the hell??!
Kenji's eyes widened as he stared at the Scraggy sliding on its knees towards Gyarados, his brain buzzing.
For a moment, he even doubted whether Scraggy was there to confess its love.
Maybe it was trying to become blood brothers with Gyarados?
At this moment, Gyarados, who was in the water, also looked bewildered, staring uncomprehendingly at the Scraggy kneeling on one knee before it on the shore.
"Scraggy!!—"
Seeing no reaction from Gyarados, Scraggy called out again, a shy blush even appearing on its face.
This time, Gyarados finally reacted. With a roar, it whipped its massive tail, sending a huge wave crashing towards Scraggy on the shore.
"SPLASH!!—"
The wave was powerful and aggressive, knocking Scraggy off balance. It tumbled backward twice, and the flowers in its hand were completely destroyed, leaving only a stem.
At this point, Kenji finally reacted and checked Scraggy's status panel.
Scraggy
Sex: Male
Level: LV.33
Type: Fighting/Dark
Ability: Moxie
Potential: B+
This Scraggy that had popped out of nowhere actually had a B+ potential, which was barely passable.
Kenji just glanced at it, not having much desire to capture it.
Scraggy lay on the ground, spread-eagled. Not only was it not scared by Gyarados, but it actually had a look of joy and satisfaction on its face.
Kenji approached Scraggy, poking its head with his finger while whispering, "Hey, little guy, are you okay?"
"Scraggy!—"
As soon as Kenji poked its head, before he could even withdraw his hand, Scraggy suddenly kipped up, standing once again. Without sparing Kenji a second glance, it continued to gaze at Gyarados with a lovestruck expression.
Gyarados growled low, its fierce eyes glaring at Scraggy. There was no doubt that if Kenji wasn't standing right next to Scraggy, Gyarados would have slapped it with its tail.
Kenji couldn't understand Pokémon language, but he could guess that Gyarados's growl roughly translated to telling Scraggy to get lost.
"Scraggy..."
Scraggy scratched its head and pulled up its "pants," seeming troubled about how to woo its blue sweetheart.
Kenji pursed his lips. Seeing that Scraggy meant no harm, he didn't bother intervening further, silently critiquing it in his mind.
This Scraggy is too dim-witted. If it wants to hit on my Gyarados, anyone with a brain would know to get on the good side of its trainer first.
Kenji's thoughts started to wander.
Gyarados belonged to the Water 2 and Dragon egg groups.
Scraggy was also in the Dragon egg group.
Theoretically, there was no reproductive barrier between Scraggy and Gyarados.
But given Scraggy's small stature, wanting to be a Dragon Knight seemed a bit ambitious.
"WHAM!!!—"
While Kenji was lost in thought, Gyarados seemingly lost patience. Unable to stand Scraggy's presence any longer, it slapped Scraggy away with its tail.
"Whoa..."
Kenji was startled, watching Scraggy fly a considerable distance in a perfect arc before crashing heavily onto the ground.
His Gyarados sure had a temper.
This Scraggy was bold, too. Of all the Pokémon to fall for, it picked the one with the worst temper.
After slapping Scraggy away, Gyarados leisurely returned to soaking in the water.
Although the tail slap looked powerful, Gyarados hadn't used any elemental energy, so it didn't actually knock Scraggy out.
Scraggy climbed up from the ground, clutching its "pants"—which were actually its shed skin—looking like a pair of suspenders without the straps.
It wore a conflicted expression, afraid to approach but unwilling to leave.
Kenji ignored it. Since the little guy meant him no harm, he let it watch if it wanted to.
However, if he remembered correctly, Scraggy were social Pokémon. But looking at the map, there didn't seem to be a Scraggy colony nearby.
Kenji shook his head, not dwelling on it. He wasn't in a rush to travel, so he decided to start training his Pokémon.
In the wild, there naturally weren't comprehensive training facilities like at the academy, but battle-style training worked well enough.
Beedrill acted as a sparring partner for Gyarados. Of course, mainly because aside from Gyarados, the masochist, no other Pokémon was willing to spar with Beedrill.
Ninetales took Bellossom aside.
Bellossom's training focus remained on Synthesis and Solar Beam.
On one hand, maintaining the normalized Synthesis state; on the other, compressing the charge time for Solar Beam as much as possible.
Normally, Solar Beam required a very long preparation time when it wasn't sunny.
First, it needed to gather surrounding sunlight, then convert it into a beam to fire.
The power was immense, but due to the long wind-up, it was rarely used in actual combat unless sunny weather could be set up.
However, perhaps because the two small red flowers on Bellossom's head naturally gathered sunlight, its charge time was extremely short even without sunny weather.
Added to that was the boost from the Blue Buff, making Bellossom's Solar Beam charge time negligible even outside of sunny conditions.
Blue Buff
