Chapter 118: A Fanboy? Bug-Type Champion?
Wesley seemed to notice the regret in Kenji's eyes and proactively suggested, "Marina should be back this afternoon. If you're not in a hurry, Kenji, you can look around the Riverton Gym for now. You can challenge the Gym again in the afternoon. How does that sound?"
Wesley paused, then blinked and smiled. "Besides... my son is your loyal little fanboy."
Kenji was stunned. Loyal little fanboy? Since when did I have fans?
"Well... alright." Kenji thought about it and decided he didn't want to miss the chance to battle the Gym Leader herself.
Furthermore... as a Provincial Gym Leader, Marina had been busy dealing with the agitated Pokémon and abnormal weather in Jinling City.
Kenji wanted to use Gym Leader Marina as an entry point to learn more about any potential news regarding Legendary Pokémon.
Seeing Kenji agree, Wesley happily called over a staff member.
"Little Johnny will be very happy to see you. Since I have to be ready for challengers at any time, I can't accompany you," Wesley said apologetically.
Little Johnny? That must be Wesley and Marina's child.
"It's fine, Mr. Wesley. Please attend to your work." Kenji waved his hand and followed the staff member.
As a Provincial Gym, the training facilities were naturally top-notch, even better than the environment at the Pokémon Center.
Wesley had prepared a private training ground for him. Kenji looked around, then reached for his Pokéballs. "Come on out, everyone!!"
Seven Pokémon were released one by one.
Without needing Kenji to say anything, the Pokémon obediently began their training according to the plans Kenji had set for them.
"Click..."
The door to the training hall opened.
Kenji wasn't surprised. It was likely Wesley and Marina's child, his little fan.
Turning his head, sure enough, a boy who looked about six or seven pushed the door open and trotted toward him.
When he saw Kenji's face, his excitement visibly spiked.
"Big Brother Kenji!!" the boy shouted, running faster.
Kenji took the opportunity to size up the kid.
The boy looked to be about 1.2 meters tall, sturdy and round-headed. He looked very endearing, the kind of grandson every grandparent dreamed of.
"Thud..."
While Kenji was observing him, the boy, who had been running happily just a moment ago, suddenly stumbled and face-planted onto the floor.
Seriously, kid?
Kenji was startled and hurried over.
But before Kenji could reach him, the boy scrambled up by himself, his eyes shining as he looked at the approaching Kenji.
"Big Brother Kenji!!"
This kid is tough. He lives up to the name "Strong," Kenji mused silently.
Although Kenji usually wasn't fond of kids, this little guy was so enthusiastic toward him, and a fan to boot. Kenji crouched down and softened his voice. "Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?"
"I'm fine, I'm fine! Just a little ouchie," the boy said, rubbing his nose.
"Hello. My name is Kenji. What's your name?" Kenji extended his hand.
The boy extended his hand as well, shaking Kenji's hand solemnly. "Hello. My name is Johnny Song."
"Hello, Johnny."
Johnny... a good name.
"By the way, Big Brother Kenji..." Johnny started, then hesitated.
"What is it?" Kenji met Johnny's sparkling eyes.
"Big Brother Kenji, do you have a super strong, super cool Beedrill? Can I see it?" Johnny's eyes shone with anticipation.
Kenji paused, realizing something from Johnny's expression.
This kid probably wasn't his fan, but Beedrill's.
"Over there," Kenji pointed to a corner of the training ground.
Following Kenji's finger, Johnny looked and indeed saw a Beedrill with yellow and red stripes training.
"It's Beedrill!!!" Johnny's mouth dropped open, his face filled with undisguised excitement as he clenched his small fists.
"Do you want to go closer and take a look?" Kenji asked.
Johnny hesitated, then shook his head. "No, no. I can't interrupt Beedrill's training."
As he spoke, however, he couldn't stop staring longingly at the training Beedrill.
His words said no, but his eyes said yes. Kenji found the sight amusing.
It was clear that Johnny's parents, Wesley and Marina, had raised him well. He wasn't a spoiled brat.
"Alright then. How about we go see it up close after Beedrill finishes training?" Kenji offered gently.
Johnny nodded and obediently followed Kenji to sit on the side.
The two chatted casually while watching Beedrill train.
Through their conversation, Kenji finally understood why Johnny liked Beedrill so much.
"When I grow up, I'm going to be the Bug-Type Champion!!" Johnny declared seriously, clenching his fist.
Trainers specializing in Bug-types were rare. Those with means usually didn't choose to focus solely on Bug-types, as their base stats were generally lower.
Only civilian trainers would typically specialize in Bug-types due to their fast growth and low resource consumption in the early stages.
