Over the next six months, Kai and Yuhan traveled across the cultivation world, recruiting allies.
They visited small sects threatened by the Phoenix Flame coalition. Rogue cultivator groups who wanted to protect the mortal realms. Even some demon beast tribes who opposed the invasion from the demon realm.
Their Soul Transformation cultivation gave them authority. Their youth gave them idealism that resonated with others. Their genuine desire to protect rather than conquer won hearts.
Slowly, painfully, a coalition formed.
The Azure Sky Alliance, they called it. Fifteen sects, three dozen independent cultivator groups, and surprisingly, several demon beast tribes who saw the invading force as a perversion of natural order.
But the Phoenix Flame Sect's coalition was stronger—four major sects, dozens of minor ones, and a secret alliance with some of the invading demon lords.
War was inevitable.
It came on a cold winter morning when Phoenix Flame forces attacked three Azure Sky Alliance outposts simultaneously.
Kai and Yuhan were at the northern outpost when the attack came. Five hundred enemy cultivators, led by Nascent Soul and Soul Transformation experts.
"Finally," Yuhan said, drawing his sword. "I was getting tired of politics."
"Remember—we're not just fighting to win. We're fighting to minimize casualties on both sides." Kai's void energy gathered. "Disable, don't kill unless necessary."
"Compassion in war. You really have changed."
They entered the battle.
What followed would be spoken of in legends for generations. Two Soul Transformation cultivators, barely eighteen years old, holding off an army.
Kai's void techniques created spatial barriers that prevented enemy attacks from reaching his allies. He teleported wounded soldiers to safety. He disrupted enemy formations without killing, creating chaos instead of carnage.
Yuhan's sword danced through the battlefield, disarming opponents, destroying weapons, cutting through techniques but sparing lives where possible.
The enemy forces, expecting an easy victory, instead found themselves outmaneuvered by two cultivators who fought with skill beyond their years.
Within three hours, the Phoenix Flame forces retreated, having accomplished nothing except confirming what everyone was beginning to suspect: Kai Shen and Feng Yuhan were prodigies the like of which appeared once in a millennium.
News spread fast. More sects joined the Azure Sky Alliance, drawn by the promise of leadership that prioritized protection over conquest.
But it also made Kai and Yuhan even bigger targets.
Hua Xinya placed enormous bounties on their heads. Assassins from a dozen different organizations came after them.
None succeeded. But the attempts were getting more sophisticated, more dangerous.
"We need to end this," Kai said after the seventh assassination attempt in a month. "Not just survive it—end it. Decisively."
"You want to challenge Hua Xinya directly," Yuhan said. It wasn't a question.
"She's Soul Transformation peak, maybe half-step to Transcendent Realm. We're both Soul Transformation middle stage. It would be a dangerous fight."
"But if we win, the Phoenix Flame coalition loses its leader. The war ends."
"Maybe. Or maybe it escalates further." Kai sighed. "I'm tired of fighting, Yuhan. In my previous life, I fought for a thousand years. I don't want to do that again."
"Then we end it fast. Challenge her to single combat, kill or capture her, force a peace treaty." Yuhan took Kai's hand. "Together?"
"Always together."
The challenge was issued publicly. Kai Shen and Feng Yuhan challenged Sect Master Hua Xinya to ritual combat—winner takes all, loser's sect submits to the victor's terms.
Hua Xinya accepted. How could she not? Refusing would show weakness.
The duel was set for one month hence, in neutral territory, with representatives from all major sects as witnesses.
One month to prepare for the fight that would decide the war's outcome.
