Chapter 27 - PREPARATION

Master Jian personally oversaw their training for the coming duel.

"Hua Xinya has been at Soul Transformation peak for fifty years," he said. "She's refined her techniques to perfection. Her Phoenix Flame arts can burn through even void energy. You'll be fighting one of the most skilled combatants in the Eastern Continent."

"We know," Kai said.

"Do you? Because you're both still teenagers. You've advanced quickly but you lack the decades of combat experience she has."

"Not exactly," Yuhan said carefully.

Master Jian looked between them. "You're going to tell me something impossible, aren't you?"

"Probably," Kai admitted. "Master Jian, have you ever heard of soul memory? Of consciousness persisting beyond death?"

The old sword saint was quiet for a long moment. "I've heard legends. Cultivators who died and reincarnated with memories intact. But they're just legends."

"What if they're not?" Kai met his eyes. "What if someone could live one life, die, and return to their youth with all their memories? What would that look like?"

"It would look like you two. Teenagers with the skill and understanding of ancient masters." Master Jian sat heavily. "You're saying..."

"We're saying we've fought opponents like Hua Xinya before," Yuhan said. "Many times. In another life."

"How many years?"

"A thousand, give or take."

Master Jian laughed, a sound mixing disbelief and wonder. "A thousand years. Two souls given a second chance. No wonder you fight like you do. No wonder you know things you shouldn't." He sobered. "Does Liang Qiu know?"

"He suspects. But we've never confirmed it."

"Smart. Knowledge like that... some would call it heresy, others divine providence." The old master stood. "Your secret is safe with me. But it changes how I'll train you. If you have a thousand years of experience, we don't need to teach you techniques. We need to help you access the full depth of that experience through your current cultivation base."

What followed was the most intense training of either lifetime.

Master Jian pushed them to remember, to draw on muscle memory from their previous life. Techniques they'd perfected over centuries, adapted for their current Soul Transformation realm bodies.

Kai rediscovered void techniques he'd created at Transcendent Realm, scaling them down for his current power. The Void Emperor's Art, which had let him command space itself.

Yuhan reconnected with sword techniques from his previous life as Sword Saint. The Thousand Blade Dance, where one sword became countless.

They sparred against each other daily, pushing boundaries, exploring limits.

And in quiet moments, they planned.

"Hua Xinya won't fight fair," Kai said one evening. "She'll have backup plans, hidden techniques, maybe even forbidden methods."

"So we need contingencies. Multiple win conditions."

They strategized like the ancient generals they'd been, considering every angle, every possibility.

The month passed quickly. Too quickly.

The night before the duel, they sat together on Sword Saint Peak, watching stars wheel overhead.

"Nervous?" Yuhan asked.

"Terrified," Kai admitted. "Not of losing. Of what comes after if we win. We'll have defeated a major sect master. We'll be thrust into leadership positions we're not ready for."

"We ruled three realms in our previous life."

"And look how that ended. Nine Supreme Sects united to kill me because I became a tyrant." Kai turned to face Yuhan. "I don't want power. I just want to prevent the tragedies I remember. Is that too much to ask?"

"Maybe. Probably." Yuhan took his hands. "But we're not alone this time. You're not carrying everything yourself. Let me help share the weight."

"I love you," Kai said. He'd said it before, but it felt important to say again. "In both lives, across a thousand years—I love you."

"I love you too. That's why we'll win tomorrow. Because we have something worth fighting for beyond power or glory."

They kissed under the stars, two old souls in young bodies, preparing for a battle that would reshape the cultivation world.

Tomorrow would determine everything.

But tonight, they had each other.

That was enough.
