I barely heard the rest of Serena's voice after she said her little "okay," because the only thing ringing loud in my head was the call I had to return. Vanessa.
I didn't want to step out of the dining room, but if I stayed one more second at that table, watching Serena I honestly would not be able to stop myself from breaking the space between us and fuck her against the table—contract be damned!
Also, my instincts told me to answer Vanessa's call. I had a feeling that what she was about to tell me might ruin my day but if I didn't answer on time, something would go amiss.
So I left. I stepped into my study and shut the door behind me. The second I dialed Vanessa back, she picked up like she'd been holding the phone in her hand the whole time.
"Took you long enough," she said.
"I was eating."
"With who? Your little wife?"
My jaw tightened. "What do you want, Vanessa?"
