When Xu Dan had knocked down every last one of them, the sound of sirens finally drifted in from afar.
It seemed the police were the same everywhere—always late, but never absent.
Click, click, click!
A series of guns being cocked echoed, followed by shouts of, "Hands up!" and similar commands.
A police captain stepped out from the group. Under the glow of neon lights, he took a closer look at the man standing in the center—and his face changed instantly.
"Sh*t! Are you all blind? That's Mr. Xu Dan!" the captain bellowed.
Police officers in capitalist countries were often easy to buy off. Xu Dan had never personally met this particular captain, but through the web of connections tied to Antarctica Games, the man certainly knew who Xu Dan was.
And he was well aware of just how powerful the company's reputation had become—not just in the country, but around the world.
Of course, that didn't mean every cop in America was like this one. It just so happened that this captain was particularly… pragmatic.
At his furious shout, all the surrounding officers immediately lowered their weapons.
The captain hurried over with a nervous grin."Mr. Xu Dan, my apologies! My subordinates are all rookies—haven't really seen much of the world!"
Xu Dan gave him a sideways glance."I can tell."
"Haha, yes, yes—they really are a bunch of idiots!" the captain laughed awkwardly, then looked down at the bodies scattered all over the ground—and the few gangsters who were still barely breathing. "Forgive me, Mr. Xu Dan… but what exactly happened here?"
"Take a few of them alive and interrogate them," Xu Dan said calmly. "Same as that fake reporter this morning."
"Ah—right, yes, of course!" The captain nodded and bowed repeatedly.
The nearby officers watched in disbelief as their normally arrogant superior acted like a loyal dog, wagging his tail in front of this man.
Adults knew flattery when they saw it—but to make that pompous captain fawn like this…Who exactly was this Xu Dan?
They all realized they'd nearly messed with the wrong person.Silently, they burned Xu Dan's face into memory—and mentally placed him on their "do-not-touch" list.
Still, the corpses lying all over the street were hard to ignore.
This was murder, after all!
But before anyone could speak, the captain's furious roar rang out again.
"You useless mutts! What are you waiting for? These are Kingpin's men—they were trying to assassinate Mr. Xu Dan! Move it! Or do you want me to clean up these filthy gangsters myself?!"
The officers jolted into action.Anything involving Kingpin? Perfect scapegoat. Whether or not it was true didn't matter.
They quickly carried off the half-dead gangsters and loaded them into ambulances.Forensic teams soon arrived to start collecting the bodies.
"Dan, are you alright?"
Liva came running up, her big, bright eyes full of worry.
"I'm fine," Xu Dan said softly, warmth flickering in his chest. "Let's go back."
The captain was tactful enough not to interrupt. Xu Dan gave him an approving look.
With that kind of emotional intelligence—even without real ability—he'd climb the ranks quickly.
And indeed, Xu Dan's judgment was spot-on.
The man had conveniently sidestepped a mountain of red tape and saved everyone a tedious investigation.
He'd even taken a call earlier that day about the fake reporter—so if he still misread the situation now, he might as well go write melodramatic TV dramas instead of running a precinct.
Once Xu Dan finished speaking with Liva, the captain stepped forward again.
"Mr. Xu Dan, we've noticed Kingpin's been unusually active in the Clinton district lately. Please, be careful—take care of yourself."
"I will," Xu Dan said.
"Yes, I'm sure you will," the captain replied with a meaningful smile.
Xu Dan's lips curved. "Tell me, Captain—if you were the one to bring Kingpin down… would that earn you a few promotions?"
At those words, the captain's eyes lit up.
This—this was an opportunity!
Kingpin was the most powerful crime lord in America. The entire police force had struggled with him—some too afraid to act, others unable to find him.
And he was one of those who wanted to catch him but couldn't.
But now… with the mighty Antarctica Games willing to assist—
"Yes! Absolutely, Mr. Xu Dan! I could rise several ranks—maybe even become commissioner! Then I'd be able to uphold justice for people like you—important citizens who make this country great!"
Xu Dan couldn't help but chuckle at the man's shameless flattery. Smiling faintly, he took Liva by the hand and left.
The story of one man single-handedly defeating a whole gang soon reached Kingpin's ears.
His massive frame trembled with rage—and then he smashed the computer in front of him with a single punch, reducing it to twisted metal and shattered glass.
Grinding his teeth, he rose and stared out over the city from his skyscraper window.
"Go," he growled. "Bring Bullseye back."
Bullseye — one of Kingpin's most trusted lieutenants. They said he had an uncanny gift: every throw hits its mark.Anything he launched—no matter what it was—never missed.
If Kingpin was calling in Bullseye, it meant he was serious.
The only problem was that Bullseye's mind wasn't exactly stable.Despite his deadly accuracy, he was currently wasting time in a bar, playing games with ordinary thugs.
Still, no one dared delay Kingpin's order. His men immediately scattered to find Bullseye.
When they were gone, Kingpin exhaled slowly and turned back toward the wreckage of his computer.
"What an interesting game…" he murmured. "To create something like this, Mr. Xu Dan, you've really outdone yourself. Perhaps it's time I… take your place."
The game he had just been playing was Warcraft.
A game so masterfully designed, so optimized, that it hooked him instantly — addictive as a drug.
The more he played, the more he realized—he couldn't stop.
Even though he knew this was a dangerous obsession, his body refused to listen. It wasn't just his mind craving it now — even his hands longed to play Warcraft again.
Conquest.
That was a word Kingpin had always loved.
He hadn't been born a king of the underworld. He had clawed his way up step by bloody step —killing countless men, burying countless brothers, shedding oceans of blood.
Every inch of his empire had been paid for in pain and sacrifice.
And now, he couldn't stand it—that a man named Xu Dan, who had gone bankrupt and vanished for days, had suddenly risen from nowhere like a ghost, and built one of the most powerful gaming companies in the world.
For the first time in years, Kingpin stooped down himself, picking up the mangled remains of the computer.
"What an intriguing game indeed…" he muttered.
