Chapter 8 - Reptilians

She checked if Zoey was alive, smiling as she discovered she was still breathing. Her sight blurring, Zaya knew if she let go to the pain, she might die that instant. She didn't care anymore, after all, Zoey was alive, someone would definitely come for them.

She then sensed that powerful energy again, they were closer than before, and this time, she could smell it clear enough to get a mind picture. They were some sort of fire creatures, from their speed and noise, they should be roughly a hundred in number.

She rose up again, lifted Zoey on her back, and began running to the entrance of the cave. She could feel the lava monsters closing in on them, she sprinted faster, enough to closely match a bike's speed. Her heart beating immeasurably fast.

Finally, she made it to the entrance of the cave, the cold wind swept across her body, she felt relieved. She ran a bit further, her eyes pacing, looking for any trace of the others. She knew she did not have much time, the larva creatures were coming, so she had to kill all of them or at least trap them in their hiding place.

She could only resort to one last action, she changed back to her fox form, her muscles growing larger, fangs growing longer, claws evolving from her fingers' purple fur enveloping her body. She sniffed around, running in all directions in the cold snow, finally, she did it, she sniffed them out.

At that moment, the lava creatures were almost at the cave's entrance, Zaya ran with all her might towards where the others were located. They were not so far from where she stood, they all seemed to be headed to her direction.

Zaya knew it wasn't totally right, but she dropped Zoey on the snowy ground, gently tapped her frequently to wake, and then left the scene.

The others stopped, seeing Zoey lay on the ground, "Zoey, what happened?" asked Ashara, who stared intently at her, seeing she'd had begun sitting up.

"What...Zaya?" asked Pauline, yelled "did she make it?" "I don't know," Zoey said, shaking her head in sadness, "we have to go back to save her." Natasha suggested.

"No, we can't," June said, "If we go back there, she will be the one saving us." "I'm very certain she saved Zoey," June continued, "Zaya is the only one that can confront whatever half-breeds are in there."

"But it's a natural disaster, Pauline said, she might need our help," "Not really, we are not yet ready," Ashara said, intervening, "we'll be like cats facing lions," it's totally gonna be an epic fail, said Ashara sadly.

In the midst of their arguments, an avalanche appeared from the top of the mountain, sliding down as there was an ice outburst from the mountain, larva began pouring. The volcano then erupted, making it more chaotic.

They took to their heels, together with Zoey, as they made their way out from the scene. In the depth of their hearts, they knew, at most, Zaya was not going to make it back, as she was alone, but none of them in their right senses would go towards that volcano.

On getting away safely, they were met by the rescue team, who immediately lifted all of them, like they'd just had an accident, putting them into an ambulance, which rode away from the eruption site as quickly as possible.

Through the ambulance window, each of them stared back at the volcano, poking their heads through the window. The cops arrived, along with a bunch of firefighters, who were going to push back the lava and stop it from flooding the whole place.

"She'll always remain in my heart," Zoey thought sadly, after all, she knew wouldn't be alive now without her.

Zaya sat cross-legged in her fox form at the front of the cave, her eyes closed, she was trying to get the strength she had lost back. She focused on her heart rate and breathing, trying to increase the blood flow in her body so she could get stronger.

Zaya, still sitting in her lotus position, a while after, right at her front, stood the creatures she'd been waiting for. She stood up and opened her eyes. A chill ran down her spine as she saw a group of reptilian-looking creatures, their skin bright red with thick scales as armor, their head bent and shaped like that of a snake.

They all held different weapons in their hands, but their crimson eyes looked human and glowed brightly. They suddenly began to look at each other, as confused yet fearful gazes appeared on their faces.

Zaya no longer held back, as her claw sharpened, seeing this, one of the reptilian creatures launched at her. Without hesitation, she attacked the creature, giving it a deadly punch, which sent it flying a few meters away, the others joined, sharp daggers in their hands.

Zaya began shielding, dodging, and kicking these human beasts, she was definitely a lot more stronger than they were, judging from their appearance. This continued for a while, it didn't end, Zaya didn't want to kill them, as they could be probably humans, and she was the one who invaded their home.

She was being pushed back, and they began hitting her from different directions. She moved swiftly amongst them, her fox senses honed. She took one of the weapons being held by one of them, before she could use it, she was smashed on the ground by reptilians holding her as tight as they could.

One of the reptilians grabbed a sharp dagger, heading straight for Zaya's head, her eyes widened; this creature had no mercy at all. Or maybe they just hated foxes, moving her head with speed, she dodged the strike, Zaya used a lot of her strength to overpower the reptilians keeping her down.

She took to her heels in fear, heading towards where she saw her friends last. She then suddenly heard that still, calm voice, which usually spoke from her gem, but this time, it was from inside the cave, like echoes of some sort, "Stop! you can't back down now." hit the wall on the right.
