Chapter 20 - Chapter 19: SS-Level Mission

"What?!"

"Kill the Demon Dragon?!"

Kevin and Erza were stunned by the king's audacious idea.

That was a Dragon, and even the most ordinary legendary Dragons were said to be capable of easily destroying an entire country.

While Erza wasn't surprised by the existence of Dragons—after all, Natsu was raised by the Fire Dragon Igneel—Kevin, having watched more of the Fairy Tail anime, knew Dragons were formidable beings. They were difficult for humans to defeat without Dragon Slayer Magic, as human magic had little effect on them.

Dragons had long lifespans, powerful physiques, and the ability to use potent Dragon Magic.

While powerful Dragon Slayer Mages might kill Dragons, non-Dragon Slayer Mages would find it extremely challenging.

The biggest reason was Dragons' natural resistance to human magic; most magic was ineffective against them, and even if it worked, the damage was minimal.

"That's right! Kill the Demon Dragon! After four hundred years of sealing, the Demon Dragon's power must be greatly weakened. Rather than waiting for it to break the seal and recover, it's better to strike first, break the seal, and kill it to eliminate future threats!"

The king spoke with earnest determination.

Kevin and Erza were somewhat surprised by the king's boldness and courage.

Erza said, "Your Majesty, slaying a Dragon completely exceeds the scope of an S-rank mission."

The king nodded, "I know, so I plan to upgrade the mission to SS-rank, and the reward will increase from 15 million J to 30 million J!"

"30 million!"

Kevin couldn't help but gape, his mind quickly calculating. 30 million J equated to about 1.5 million RMB. Even if he and Erza split it evenly, that would still be a substantial sum.

He had thought 6 million J from his last mission was a lot, but this was even more.

Indeed, the bigger the waves, the more expensive the fish.

Most importantly, an SS-rank commission, according to the system, offered a reward of two sets of ten consecutive draws.

If he were to normally take A-rank missions, working non-stop, it would take at least half a year, which was too time-consuming.

Erza said, "I need to discuss this with my companion."

The king nodded, indicating they were free to go.

Erza turned to Kevin, "Kevin, this mission is too dangerous. I didn't expect it to be more than just finding a legendary sword; they actually want us to fight a Dragon. My suggestion is to give up."

While she could attempt an S-rank mission, an SS-rank was different; courage and recklessness were not the same.

A Dragon, that was a legendary creature. No matter how weak, it wasn't something humans could contend with. Whether for her own safety or Kevin's, giving up was wise.

Kevin looked at the king and said, "Since Your Majesty has such a plan, you surely aren't unprepared, are you?"

The king, hearing Kevin's words, was slightly surprised and looked at him with appreciation, "You are right. This concerns the kingdom's survival, so I wouldn't be unprepared. But how did you figure that out?"

"Because Your Majesty's tone wasn't asking our opinion, but describing an event about to happen."

The king nodded, "Indeed! Even if you hadn't come, I planned to launch an expedition against the Demon Dragon."

As the king spoke, he twisted the armrest.

Click!

The floor beneath the king's feet separated, revealing a magnificent longsword with a fiery red gem embedded in the hilt.

"A sword?!"

Kevin and Erza were puzzled. A sword was the preparation? It fit the Kingdom of Swords' style.

"This is no ordinary sword; this is a Dragon Slayer Sword crafted by a master. This gem is no ordinary gem; it's a dragon slayer magic crystal."

"A dragon slayer magic crystal?!"

Kevin's eyes widened. So this was a dragon slayer magic crystal.

"Kevin, you know about dragon slayer magic crystals."

Seeing Kevin's surprise, Erza knew he understood its significance.

Kevin nodded, "Yes, it's a dragon slayer magic crystal made from a Dragon's heart. Embedding it into a body allows the use of Dragon Slayer Magic corresponding to the Dragon's attribute."

"Young man, you are knowledgeable! That's right! This is a Fire dragon slayer magic crystal. I purchased it at a high price from the northern continent of Guiltina. If embedded into a human Mage's body, they can use Dragon Slayer Magic, but it requires long-term training. To defeat a Dragon, who knows how long one would need to train."

"And human magic cannot harm Dragons, so I ordered the kingdom's artisans to forge this Dragon Slayer Sword. Only by wielding this sword and attacking the Demon Dragon can it be harmed."

As the king spoke, he gripped the sword hilt, and the sword burst into flames, making the entire palace feel like a furnace.

"So hot!"

Soon, the flames extinguished, and the king reinserted the sword.

Kevin frowned, "Such an important weapon surely wouldn't be given to others casually, right?"

"Of course! This is the key to victory against the Demon Dragon and determines the nation's survival. Naturally, it cannot be given to just anyone. Only the strongest swordsman is worthy of wielding this sword."

"The strongest swordsman?"

"Exactly! You two have arrived at just the right time. For this operation, I, in the name of the king, have convened the World's Strongest Swordsman Tournament to select the strongest swordsman on the Ishgar continent."

"The World's Strongest Swordsman Tournament?!"

Kevin and Erza were dumbfounded; this king truly loved surprises.

Then the king looked at Erza with admiration, "This Mage lady is also an excellent swordsman, isn't she? Able to defeat a 5-star Blazing Boar in one strike, her strength is at least that of a 6-star, or even 7-star swordsman. Don't you want to give it a try?"

Upon hearing that, Erza was immediately moved. As a swordsman, who wouldn't yearn to become the strongest?
