In the car, Clara stared out the window, refusing to look at Ethan. She kept her arms folded tightly, like she was holding herself together by sheer will. Ethan focused on the road, jaw clenched, every muscle in his body working overtime to stay silent like his wife had asked.
But the moment he turned onto a quieter road, one that very clearly did not directly lead to her office, Clara snapped.
"What the hell, Ethan?" she said, turning her head toward him. "This is not the way to the DA's office."Her voice was sharp, her patience thin.
Ethan didn't flinch. "I know," he said calmly. "But since this is the most time I've had with my wife in the last few day, I thought I would make it count." He grinned as he said it.
Clara glared at him. "You're impossible, Ethan. Completely impossible. But remember, I won't be your wife for long."
He swallowed hard as the words hit him exactly where she intended.
