Maya's POV
"You're not my mother," I say, backing against the wall.
The woman who looks like my mother smiles. "Smart girl. But I'm close enough."
She lunges forward with the syringe. I dodge sideways, screaming for help.
"Guards! Security! Help me!"
The woman is fast. She grabs my arm, trying to inject me. I fight back, kicking, scratching, biting. My baby. I have to protect my baby.
"Hold still," the fake mother hisses. "This will be easier if you don't fight."
"Maya!" Ethan's voice booms from the hallway. He must have been in his office.
The woman releases me and runs for the window. She opens it and climbs out onto the fire escape.
Ethan bursts into the room just as she disappears. "What happened? Who was that?"
"Someone who looked like my mother." My whole body shakes. "She had a syringe. She tried to inject me."
"Where are the guards?" Ethan demands, running to the window. The fire escape is empty. The intruder is gone.
