Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

The two entered the game.

In this mode, the roles were randomized, players couldn't choose whether they wanted to be the predator or the human.

His sister was already at level 8.

The only reason she hadn't discovered the mode yet was because it had been added in a recent update.

They tapped the play button.

Immediately, two lanes appeared in front of them.

Each player ran in their own lane, which had a similar layout, but the trap timing and loot placement were randomized.

Behind him, the massive monster was now fully visible.

Its skeletal head was still terrifying.

Up ahead, a human character appeared.

Tovi looked at his own hands.

"What!? This is unfair, I became the human in the first round!"

Tovi pouted.

His sister chuckled.

With her tall frame and young voice, it didn't match the terrifying appearance of the monster.

"Don't worry, I'll go easy on you!"

She had already checked the instructions earlier.

The monster had an ability called Dash, which gave a burst of high-speed sprint lasting 1.5 seconds, with a cooldown of 20 seconds.

In terms of speed in the holographic world, it could probably reach close range immediately.

However, this game had restrictions.

No matter how powerful you were in reality, the game physics were the same for everyone.

She didn't really have any complaints about that.

Winning felt better when the game was fair.

Honestly, the monster's abilities were impressive, but the one that traumatized her the most was the Arm Slap.

She remembered slipping on a tree during a late jump and getting slammed by the monster because she dodged too late.

Now, that very ability was hers to use.

She couldn't help but grin wide.

Tovi saw the monster's face twist into a grin so big it looked even more terrifying.

"Can you act normal, sis… You're scaring me."

All he got in response was a quiet "Hehe" from his sister.

He immediately regretted inviting her.

He should have played online mode countless times first before going up against her.

The countdown finished. After the ten seconds were up, the game began with a loud 3, 2, 1. The two players immediately took off running.

Tovi, now familiar with Temple Run, quickly rolled under a collapsing tree without hesitation.

Looking ahead, he spotted an arrow-shaped symbol.

He knew that trap well; it was the one he kept dying to. But this time, it looked different.

It was wrapped in a glowing bubble, like a power-up.

Excited, he sprinted toward it and touched the item. Instantly, it became attached to his right hand.

He looked back.

His sister hadn't caught up yet. Smirking, he activated the item, and a rain of arrows launched down onto her lane.

His sister reacted fast.

She used her Dash ability to surge forward, dodging most of the arrows.

Her lane didn't have the bubble power-up like his yet, but now she understood, traps from normal mode could be picked up and used to attack the other player.

She found this version of the game much more fun than the normal mode.

Since she had already used her Dash, she was now closer to Tovi than before.

Using her large monster form to her advantage, she reached out and immediately activated Arm Slap.

Tovi was caught off guard and almost got hit, but he managed to dodge to the right just in time.

His sister grinned even wider.

"You dodged that? How about this!" Then slammed her giant arm at his left side, forcing him to move farther toward her lane.

He didn't know if he was allowed to cross into her side of the lane, but after being nearly hit three times in a row, he gritted his teeth and dashed toward the right.

"Oh? You can go over there?" she said with surprise.

Her large monster form looked just like the one from Temple Run, but her sweet voice and playful attitude didn't match her terrifying appearance.

Tovi shouted back, "Just you wait! I'm going to beat you in this game!"

If this game had a stamina bar, he would probably be exhausted by now.

In real life, his sister was faster and stronger than him.

He was just glad that the system didn't use their real-life physical stats, or he would keep losing to her every time.

He kept running and dodging the obstacles ahead while staying alert for his sister chasing behind him.

His face lit up when he saw what was coming next: a green bubble potion.

He recognized it as a poison item and quickly used it on his sister.

She slowed down, and he managed to get ahead.

After a few more minutes of playing, his sister still won.

In the final moment, she used the shift ability, overwhelmed him with the arrows she had collected, and slammed into him just like she used to do when playing with fish before she caught them.

She grabbed his legs and playfully slapped him around.

"AHHHHH!" Tovi screamed. Even though the holographic pain was zero, he was still terrified by his sister's appearance.

His trauma from the skeletal monkey made it even worse.

Tovi, crying inside, stared at the words Game Over in front of him.

He had been scared while playing the laughter, the music, and the intense atmosphere all hit him hard.

His sister didn't go easy on him at all.

He looked over at her and saw her grinning from ear to ear, and for the first time, that smile didn't make him angry.

It had been a long time since the two of them played together.

He had always had a love-hate feeling about gaming with his sister.

He hated it when they were on opposite teams, but loved it when she carried him.

Playing with her was actually more fun than playing with his friends.

Still, he wasn't going to admit it.

They were siblings, and admitting something like that was completely unacceptable.

Tovi rolled his eyes and pout at his sister who pat his head.

His sister said excitedly, "Let's play one more round!"

Tovi's eyes lit up.

"I'll beat you this time!"

His sister laughed.

"Hahaha, I won't let you!"

Hunter Vs Prey Mode was balanced.

The monster had only two ability skills, each with a long cooldown.

Meanwhile, the human player could choose any ability from their pet's skill set, which could be purchased using coins from the in-game system.

The most popular pet was the blue bird, which had the ability to freeze the monster in ice for 2 seconds.

Another favorite was the eagle, which could blind the monster for 3 seconds.

However, there was a drawback: the player could also be blinded if they looked at the bird, and monsters could avoid it by closing their eyes in time.

Even though the eagle's effect lasted only six second longer than the blue bird's, that extra second made a big difference.

The mode became popular among players, and many even hoped that a similar mode would be added to Subway Surfer.

Players who didn't have money to spend were grateful to Tierra for creating free games.

They supported the company by buying in game diamonds whenever they could.

These purchases eventually became a steady source of income for Tierra.
