Orion Oak, with a pleasant smile, called out the next pair of Trainers to the Battle Arena. Starfire, her concern still fresh from Togepi's tumble, offered Beast Boy a gentle pat on the shoulder.
"Go forth, friend Beast Boy," she said, her voice soft with encouragement. "Show them the magnificent power of Rockruff."
Beast Boy, always ready for the spotlight, bounced onto the battlefield with an energetic grin. Rockruff, a furry bundle of enthusiasm, trotted eagerly beside him, its small tail wagging a rapid rhythm against the arena floor. Across the rocky terrain, Valeria Richards, ever the picture of composed brilliance, took her place. Beldum floated silently by her side, its single red eye fixed on Beast Boy with a gaze of focused calculation. A quiet hum of anticipation settled over the crowd, mixing with the underlying excitement as the two prepared to face off.
"Alright, Valeria!" Beast Boy shouted, his voice echoing across the arena. "Get ready to rumble! Me and Rockruff are a wild team, totally un-Believable!"
Rockruff let out a happy woof, its tail thumping against the floor.
Valeria just watched him, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. "I assure you, Beast Boy, I have fully accounted for 'un-Believable' variables in my battle algorithm." She adjusted her wrist gauntlet. "Rockruff is an admirable specimen, but raw power rarely triumphs over calculated strategy."
Beast Boy scratched his head. "Calculated what-now? Sounds like fancy talk for 'I'm gonna lose'."
Orion, enjoying the exchange, raised his hand. "Trainers, please take your positions."
A low hum filled the air, vibrating through the floor beneath their feet. The arena began to split and crack. Towering trees erupted from the ground, their thick trunks stretching high towards the ceiling. Branches spread out, forming a dense, leafy canopy overhead that filtered the arena lights into dappled patterns on the ground.
Thick undergrowth and winding roots quickly covered the floor, creating an uneven, natural terrain. Patches of glowing moss, a vibrant bioluminescent green, appeared along the gnarled roots, casting an ethereal glow on the forest floor. The air filled with the earthy scent of damp soil and foliage. Digital sounds of forest creatures—chirps, rustles, and distant calls—added to the immersive atmosphere. The environment felt alive, offering numerous hiding spots and obstacles.
"Alright, Trainers!" Orion announced, his voice carrying over the forest sounds. "Release your Pokémon!"
"Go, Rockruff!" Beast Boy shouted, throwing his Premier Ball with a flourish.
POP!
Rockruff appeared in a flash of red light. The Puppy Pokémon landed with a solid thud, its sandy fur a stark contrast to the deep green undergrowth. Its rocky collar gleamed under the soft, filtered light, and its eyes sparkled with excitement. Rockruff barked, ready to charge into action.
Valeria, her expression calm, observed Rockruff for a moment. Its Rock typing was a distinct advantage in her mind. She confidently held up her own Premier Ball. "Beldum, it is your turn."
POP!
Beldum materialized from a shimmer of light, floating silently onto the field. Its metallic body seemed to absorb the dim light, and its single red eye fixed on Rockruff. Beldum prepared for combat.
"Let the battle commence!" Orion declared, his voice ringing with authority across the simulated forest.
Beast Boy did not hesitate. "Rockruff, use Tackle! Go get 'em, boy!"
Rockruff barked, a joyous sound that sliced through the quiet of the trees. The puppy Pokémon bounded forward, a blur of sandy fur and determined energy, kicking up loose leaves as it charged towards Beldum.
Valeria, however, remained calm. "Beldum, Double Team."
WHOOSH
Beldum shimmered, and then, in a flash of light, multiple copies appeared. They spread out, weaving among the thick tree trunks and dense undergrowth. Rockruff, mid-charge, skidded to a stop. It looked from one metallic form to another, its head tilted in confusion. The real Beldum was hidden among the illusions. Rockruff's attack missed its mark, hitting only air.
"Aw, man!" Beast Boy exclaimed, slapping his forehead. "That's some fancy footwork, Val! But two can play that game!" He quickly recalibrated. "Rockruff, don't let 'em fool you! Use Leer! Stare 'em down, buddy!"
Rockruff, recovering from its surprise, let out a deep, challenging bark. Its eyes narrowed, fixing on the scattered Beldum copies. The sound echoed through the simulated forest, a defiant call meant to pierce through the illusions and find the true target. The copies seemed to waver slightly under the intensity of Rockruff's gaze.
Valeria's lips curved into a subtle smile. "An admirable attempt at intimidation, Beast Boy, but Beldum is unaffected by such tactics." She had already anticipated his move, knowing Beldum's Clear Body ability rendered it immune to stat reductions. "Beldum, utilize the environment. Iron Head, now!"
The real Beldum, previously indistinguishable from its copies, detached itself from the group with a silent magnetic pulse. It glided low to the ground, weaving through the dense foliage and gnarled roots. The glowing moss cast eerie green reflections on its metallic body as it moved with silent precision, using the thick tree trunks as cover. Beldum's single red eye pulsed with a faint psychic light, a targeting reticle locking onto Rockruff.
FWOOSH
Beldum shot forward from behind a massive tree, its metallic head glowing with concentrated energy. It struck Rockruff with a powerful CRUNCH, a solid impact that sent a shower of sparks flying. Rockruff cried out, knocked sideways, sliding across the damp earth. It collided with a thick tree root, shaking the ground with the force of the hit. The attack was swift and precise, catching Rockruff off guard.
"Rockruff, no!" Beast Boy yelled, his playful grin gone. He watched his partner struggle, pushing itself back onto all fours, shaking its head to clear the hit. The little Pokémon looked dazed but determined.
Valeria maintained her calm demeanor. "A direct hit. The structural integrity of Rockruff's defense has been compromised." She observed the effect of the Iron Head, assessing the damage. "Now, Beldum, maintain pressure."
Rockruff let out a low growl, its eyes now fixed on the real Beldum. It was not going down that easily. Beast Boy, seeing the determination in Rockruff's eyes, felt a renewed surge of energy. "Alright, Val, that was a good one, but we're just getting warmed up! Rockruff, Sand Attack!"
Rockruff barked again, this time with a fierce resolve. It began to kick its front paws rapidly against the forest floor. Loose dirt, dry leaves, and small pebbles flew up in a swirling cloud, aimed directly at Beldum. The debris, illuminated by the glowing moss, created a hazy screen between the two Pokémon.
The sand cloud expanded, obscuring Beldum's vision and making it harder for the metallic Pokémon to track its opponent. Valeria narrowed her eyes, assessing the accuracy-reducing effect of the move. This was a classic tactic, simple yet effective. "Beldum, activate sensory dampeners," she commanded, adjusting her gauntlet. "Prepare to evade."
Beldum pulsed, its single eye glowing brighter as it enhanced its internal sensors to compensate for the obscuring sand. It hovered slightly higher, generating a stronger magnetic field to repel some of the incoming debris. The Iron Ball Pokémon was a machine of calculated defense.
