Chapter 120 - Chapter 120

"I saw the tournament livestream," Kitty explained, her voice quick and animated. "It was awesome! Batgirl's Froakie evolving into Frogadier? That was wild! I kinda… slipped away from school to check this place out. Professor X is going to ground me for a month if he finds out, but it'll be worth it if I can get a Pokémon."

Her hazel eyes sparkled with an almost mischievous glee. "So, how do I get one? Do I get to pick? Is there a test? I'm pretty good at tests, and I know a lot about… well, phasing through stuff. That could be useful, right?"

Kitty's playful rebellious nature shone through, a mix of youthful impulsiveness and genuine eagerness to prove herself. She wanted a partner, a friend, and a new adventure, even if it meant bending a few rules to get it.

Orion's smile broadened. "A commendable spirit, young Kitty. Many paths lead to partnership, but today, perhaps the lottery calls to you." He presented her with the sleek tablet. "Give it a tap, and let destiny guide your hand."

Kitty's fingers danced across the screen, a blur of excitement. She initiated the lottery sequence, and the display erupted in a dazzling spectacle of colors. Shadows of various Pokémon zipped across the screen, a flurry of potential partners—some tiny, some grand, all moving too fast to identify. The images swirled, slowed, then finally settled on a distinct silhouette. It was a small, feline creature with wide, unblinking eyes and large, rounded ears.

"Espurr," Kitty echoed, intrigued by the unique name. "What's an Espurr?"

Orion smiled, his gaze holding a subtle knowing warmth.

"Espurr is a Psychic-type Pokémon, Kitty," Orion explained. "They are known as the Restraint Pokémon for good reason." He gestured toward the screen. "Beneath that calm, unblinking gaze lies immense telekinetic power. An Espurr constantly suppresses its own abilities, containing raw psychic force within its small body."

He paused, letting the information settle.

"If an Espurr is startled or overwhelmed by emotion, that power can discharge unpredictably, causing anything from shockwaves to bursts of telekinetic energy." Orion's voice was calm, yet his words carried a weight that hinted at the serious nature of the Pokémon. "Despite this potential, Espurr forms deep bonds with patient trainers."

Kitty's eyes widened with a mix of wonder and concern. "So, it's like… holding back a hurricane in a teacup?"

Orion chuckled. "A fitting metaphor. Would you like to meet this particular hurricane in a teacup?"

Kitty nodded eagerly. "Absolutely!"

Orion stepped away, returning a moment later with a transparent terrarium. Inside, curled on a soft cushion, was the Espurr. Its lavender-gray fur looked impossibly soft, and its large, rounded ears twitched gently. The pale violet eyes, however, were the most striking feature, wide and seemingly vacant, yet they held an undeniable depth.

"Oh my gosh, it's so cute!" May Parker gasped from beside her mother, Mary Jane. "Look, Mom! It's like a little alien kitty!"

Mary Jane smiled, a fond hand on May's shoulder. "It certainly is unique, sweetie."

Orion carefully opened the terrarium. "Espurr, this is Kitty. She is a potential partner."

Espurr turned its unblinking gaze toward Kitty. The small Pokémon floated effortlessly from the terrarium, a subtle ripple in the air around its head. It drifted forward, its movements graceful and silent. Kitty, surprised by the levitation, slowly extended a hand. Espurr's wide eyes seemed to peer into her very core, sensing her inherent kindness and her curious, optimistic spirit. A soft, almost imperceptible purr emanated from the Pokémon. It nudged its head gently into Kitty's outstretched palm.

A warmth spread through Kitty's hand as she felt the soft fur. She smiled, an instant connection sparking between them.

"It's floating," May observed, her voice hushed with awe.

"Indeed," Orion confirmed. "Espurr uses its powerful psychic energy to levitate. It is a testament to its control that it does so with such quiet ease."

Kitty, delighted by Espurr's gentle nudges, giggled. She began to playfully trace patterns in the air with her fingers. Espurr mirrored her movements with its own psychic energy, causing a nearby display of Poké Balls to subtly levitate and spin. Orion observed with amusement, noting Espurr's comfortable interaction with Kitty, a rare display of its usually restrained power. May gasped, impressed by the silent, telekinetic dance.

"Okay, okay, I'm sold," Kitty declared, her eyes shining. "This is officially the coolest thing ever. How much?"

Orion smiled, a knowing glint in his eyes.

"Espurr is a very special Pokémon, Kitty," Orion explained. "The price for such a unique partnership is two hundred and fifty thousand dollars."

Kitty's enthusiastic expression faltered slightly. She had heard Pokémon could be expensive, but that was a quarter of a million dollars. Her savings, accumulated from years of birthday money, odd jobs around the X-Mansion, and even a few well-meaning but ill-advised attempts at online trading, flashed through her mind. It was a significant sum, nearly everything she had. A pang of guilt hit her. Professor X would have a fit if he knew she was spending her college fund on a psychic cat.

But then, she looked at Espurr. The little Pokémon's unblinking gaze held hers, a silent, powerful connection that transcended any monetary value. This wasn't just a pet; it was a partner, a companion, a piece of this amazing new world she desperately wanted to be a part of. The idea of a new kind of friendship, one that could phase through walls with her and understand her without words, was worth every penny.

"I'll take it," Kitty said, her voice firm with newfound resolve. "It's worth it."

She pulled out her wallet, a thick stack of cash appearing from a small, discreet pocket. She counted out the money, her movements precise.

Orion nodded, accepting the payment. "Excellent. Welcome to the world of Pokémon Trainers, Kitty." He then presented her with a gleaming Poké Ball. "This is a complimentary gift, to commemorate your first partner." He also handed her a small bag. "And some Poké Blocks. Espurr will appreciate them."

Kitty's hand closed around the Poké Ball. It felt smooth and cool, a symbol of her new journey. She looked at the Poké Blocks, colorful and inviting.

"Thanks, Orion!" she exclaimed. "This is so cool!"

"Now, Kitty, you'll also need one of these," Orion said, holding up a sleek, red device. "A Pokédex. It is a digital encyclopedia filled with vital data about Pokémon, their abilities, and how to care for them. An invaluable tool for any new Trainer."

Kitty sighed dramatically, though a smile still played on her lips. "More money? My wallet is practically weeping." She patted the now much lighter wallet. "But you're right. I need all the info I can get. Espurr and I are going to be unstoppable, and we'll need to know everything about our opponents."

She swiped her card again, adding the Pokédex to her purchases. It was an investment, she reminded herself. A really, really expensive investment, but one that promised adventure, friendship, and a whole lot of fun.

Kitty wasted no time. Her new Pokédex hummed in her hand. She aimed it at Espurr.

Espurr's blank, unblinking stare is not emptiness. It is intense focus, essential for containing the immense psychic power within its small body. If startled or overwhelmed, this power can discharge unpredictably. Espurr forms deep, lasting bonds with trainers who offer calm and emotional stability. It becomes a quiet guardian, anticipating danger and influencing its surroundings to protect its chosen partner. Its loyalty is absolute.

"This is amazing," Kitty murmured, looking from the Pokédex screen to Espurr. "You're incredible."

Espurr tilted its head, a subtle psychic pulse radiating warmth.

"I can't wait to get you home," Kitty said to the Poké Ball. "Professor X is going to be so surprised."

May watched, her small face alight with an inner fire. Seeing Kitty's immediate bond with Espurr sparked a renewed determination in her own heart. She had seen how a Pokémon chose its trainer. One day, she would find her own companion.

"I want one, too, Mom," May declared, her voice firm. "I really, really do."

Mary Jane smiled down at her daughter. "We'll see, sweetie. You heard Orion. Things are changing."

Kitty, with Espurr safely stored, waved goodbye to Orion. "Thanks for everything!" she called out, already planning her next steps. She hurried out the door, eager to show Professor X her new partner.

Mary Jane and May followed, their conversation now filled with hopeful anticipation for the coming world transformation. The idea of wild Pokémon appearing across the world no longer seemed like a distant dream. It felt like a promise.

"Bye, Orion!" Mary Jane said warmly. "We'll definitely be back!"

They left Pokémon Home, the bustling lobby filled with the promise of a world where trainers and Pokémon would walk side by side.
