Chapter 20 - First Clash Against a Ghost

A/N: This is it gentleman, I'll see you guys on monday!

I wish you all a happy and peaceful weekend.

[Blood Diary Entry]

Ever since that thing took its veil off, I've been having this urge to hurl, like it's not even funny. Because this thing is just disgusting.

The arms that were covered in a bridal-style dress were now bare, showing its rotting skin that was peeling off from the bones. The bouquet of beautiful white flowers wilted in a single moment. But her face was the worst part; her jaw was missing, and a long, disgusting tongue lolled out freely, her eye sockets were empty, save for the maggots I saw crawling around in there.

I am pretty sure I won't be able to eat anything after this…

The thing seemed to have understood my earlier insult—though I was just speaking the truth—and was now quite pissed off.

It screeched so loud that the dust around us shot upwards in an arc.

I mean, I could roar and see who is louder between us, but I don't really want to… I am not an animal; it would be weird for me to go roaring at every little fight, like those cringy vampires that hiss at every turn.

Yeah no… I am not doing that, thank you very much.

I cracked my neck and prepared to stand around and do nothing for a few minutes. After all, I couldn't harm this thing, and it's not like it could do the same to me.

Big mistake on my part…

It lunged forward towards me, impressive speed, but I could keep up with it quite easily.

What made me jealous, though, was how silent it was. But I guess it comes with the territory, I suppose a ghost, or specter—or whatever this is—doesn't really play by the rules of Sir Isaac Newton.

The 'lady' fazed by me, passing through my body. Got to admit, it is not a pleasant sensation.

Not at all.

It feels like you got the wind knocked out of you, and every organ in your body squirms and twists around for a moment.

Urgh…

But what caught my attention was that my body withered, looking almost like I was mummified, but after a second, it reverted back to normal.

The ghost looked at me in confusion, unsure of why I was perfectly fine.

I assume by now, its prey usually were on the verge of passing or something along those lines.

I looked back at the damn thing and my eyes narrowed in annoyance.

I could just stand around and leave after I know Rebekah and Mom are safe, but… that felt revolting, and I am not doing that again.

My eyes glowed a brighter red, and when the thing looked at them, she flinched—like actually flinched. A second later, she shook her head and lunged again.

This time, though, I didn't want to play sitting duck.

'Time to test this out, huh?'

When she got close enough, I let my instincts take hold of me, guiding me to what I wanted to do.

My body felt light, lighter than it ever was. I could see everything around me, though 'seeing' is not really the best way to describe it since I no longer had eyes.

My entire body had turned into mist in the color of blood.

The ghost passed right through me, and this time I felt no weakness, and no disgusting feeling as well.

This method seemed to work like a charm.

Now neither of us could harm the other. Meaning we were at an impasse, at least until this thing decides to ignore me and try to pursue the SUV.

That would give me enough time to prepare a blood spell that would have nasty consequences for it. So, while we were indeed at a stalemate, I held the upper hand.

Once the ghost passed through me and stood at a distance, I let my body reform, and lo and behold, I was indeed completely unharmed.

It snarled at me, filled with annoyance and helplessness.

I just smiled and waved at it, and I swear it got so annoyed that if it still had feet, it would've stomped the ground in irritation…

Wait, does this thing still have feet? Something inside me said that I did NOT want an answer to my question.

My only problem with my mist form is that my sense of touch goes to hell, like a distant echo; it gets hard to perceive things by touch in that state. Though I can touch and interact with things like that, I need immense focus to do so. Fortunately, I have the memories of a billion-year-old entity that researched our species to hell and back, so getting the hang of it wouldn't be that difficult.

It lunged after me a few more times, and every time it did, I dissolved into mist, rendering its efforts void.

I believe if something or someone were to see this, they would think we were playing around like good friends, were it not for the ghostly shrieks every time it tried to kill me.

But I am quite positive that anyone else in my place would have already turned into a mummy.

How peculiar…

This thing is indeed quite dangerous. Unfortunately for it, I am a bad match for its every ability.

After some ten minutes of tries and repeated failures, it just stopped, stood still, and pulled the veil down, going back to its more visually acceptable form.

But this experience forever ruined bridal gowns with veils for me.

And just like that, we both stood still, not really doing much else.

The air got kind of awkward, and I kept looking all around trying to ignore the thing in front of me.

We stayed like that for a couple more minutes, until the taillights of the car vanished from my sight.

I nodded to myself, dusted my clothes off, waved at the ghost again—just to annoy it because why the hell not—and turned myself into mist, before speeding away in that form.

The way it moved so silently gave me this idea, as I swirled my mist form in a vortex-like pattern and sped at ridiculous speeds to the SUV.
