Chapter 42 - Basic Infrastructure Really Matters

Seeing that the atmosphere was no longer as quiet, Dai Mubai finally managed to free himself from Zhu Zhuqing's cold attitude toward him. He straightened up, revealing the bearing of a senior student, and said:

"Everyone, as new students, you must not be familiar with the academy yet. By age, I'm the oldest among the students, so if you ever have any problems, you can come to me.

As for what to call me, just call me Mubai, or like the other senior students do—Boss Dai.

Also, what Teacher Zhao said earlier about everyone getting along more closely wasn't without reason.

During our time at the academy, when it comes to obtaining soul rings, we rely on each other—through teamwork and mutual assistance—to go into the Star Dou Forest and hunt suitable soul beasts ourselves.

The teachers will accompany us, but they will only step in when we encounter dangers beyond our abilities.

From what I see, Xiao San, you and Xiao Wu are already at the peak of rank twenty-nine and could break through at any moment.

So it shouldn't be long before we all cooperate for the first time and head together into the Star Dou Forest to hunt for soul rings.

To make sure our actions go smoothly, we must build up strong teamwork in our daily academy life. After all, the Soul Beast Forest does not tolerate mistakes."

After Dai Mubai finished speaking, Oscar seized the opportunity to emphasize that he was the older twin and said that everyone could call him "Big Ao" or just Oscar.

Austine also said they could call him "Little Ao," and added that his first soul skill could accelerate meditation.

He reminded everyone that before meditating at night, they shouldn't forget to come find him for a "Charcoal-Grilled Cheese Beef Burger."

Ma Hongjun also told everyone that calling him "Fatty" was fine.

The new students also introduced how they preferred to be addressed. For a while, the atmosphere was lively and cheerful—until the group arrived at the dormitory area.

When the new students saw the desolate sight of the dormitory area—only five buildings that could accommodate people—their eyes were filled with disbelief. The older students, except for Austine, looked rather embarrassed as well.

After all, even from a distance, it was obvious that three of those buildings looked like proper housing—clearly the dorms for senior students.

That meant the remaining two, entirely made of metal and looking more like temporary shelters, would be the dorms for the four new students.

Yesterday, Dai Mubai and the others hadn't expected that aside from Tang San and Xiao Wu, there would be other new students joining them.

So they had only prepared one new foam-metal house, which, combined with the existing ones, should have been just enough.

But reality rarely goes as planned.

Shrek Academy, which usually couldn't recruit even a single new student, had unexpectedly admitted four new ones this year. Austine actually knew about it, but of course, he couldn't say anything.

Four new students would already have been fine—but the key issue was that three of them were very beautiful girls.

And for girls, who usually have more belongings and daily necessities than boys, the current accommodation conditions were truly too crude.

The main issue was the space in the dorms; the other facilities were actually adequate.

According to the structure of the two foam-metal houses and the three-to-one female-to-male ratio among the new students,

When arranging rooms, the three girls could only live in the older of the two buildings—it had three separate rest compartments, barely enough to house them.

As for the newly built one, it was essentially a single room, so having the three girls live there was out of the question. The only solution was to let Tang San, the sole male, live there alone.

This immediately led to an unfair situation: Tang San had spacious accommodations, while the girls were left with very limited space.

Finally, Austine thickened his skin and explained:

"Ahem, everyone, don't be discouraged by how crude things look now. This is actually due to the rules set by the Headmaster.

The academy has always had a tradition: new students must find their own way to build their personal dorms.

When you first enroll, the school only provides a simple temporary shelter.

Every senior student here has gone through this stage—the dorms we live in now were all designed by ourselves and built at our own expense after enrollment.

We just didn't expect so many people to enter the academy this year, so our preparations were a bit lacking."

After Austine finished, Dai Mubai added apologetically,

"I'll take you all to look at the two temporary houses, and then you can decide how to divide the rooms.

Actually, you won't need to stay there for long. From what I see, none of you seem short on money. As long as your desired dorm isn't overly luxurious or complicated,

You can hire a construction team from Suotuo City, and it should be completed within a week."

Hearing this, the new students relaxed—the rule was just part of the academy's system.

Considering Shrek Academy's ridiculously strict enrollment requirements, this kind of eccentric dorm rule didn't seem too hard to accept.

After touring the two temporary shelters with Dai Mubai, the new students felt more at ease.

Though called temporary housing, the living facilities were fairly complete—the girls just found the space a little cramped.

Indeed, the girls had already silently agreed to let Tang San live alone in that single foam-metal house.

Even Xiao Wu didn't think it was appropriate to share a house with Tang San in front of everyone.

Fortunately, it would only be a week—if they worked fast, it'd be fine. At least they still had their own personal space.

Once the housing issue was settled, there wasn't much else to handle, so the girls all gathered to play with Cohen.

It had to be said—although Cohen was big, he didn't look fierce. Covered in soft white fur, he looked like a giant living plush toy.

His charm toward girls was devastatingly strong. Combined with his gentle, affectionate personality and ability to understand human speech,

It took less than half a day for Cohen to completely win over all the girls' hearts.

Watching Cohen surrounded by pretty girls, rubbing against them left and right, the boys who were pushed aside looked utterly pitiful.

At this moment, Tang San had already integrated himself into the senior students' circle.

"Little Ao, that dog's a male, right? Even if it understands human speech, it shouldn't deliberately get close to girls... right?"

Honestly, Tang San's tone was full of sour jealousy—he was clearly envious of Cohen.

Austine wondered if he should warn Cohen to be careful not to wander too much around Tang San, lest Tang San decide to... neuter him.

Austine got lost in thought and didn't respond right away, but Oscar, seeing Cohen making Ning Rongrong laugh happily, couldn't hold back.

"Hmph, Xiao San, you really underestimate that fellow. As a hundred-year soul beast that understands human language and can write words,

Cohen is definitely a freak of nature. So who knows—maybe he does have some ulterior motives."

Before Oscar could finish, Dai Mubai, who had just seen Zhu Zhuqing smile, exploded in jealousy:

"That mutt is absolutely doing it on purpose! Even from here I can see the satisfied look in its eyes!"

His gritted teeth made Austine think he might kill the dog out of spite any moment.

Then Austine noticed that the other three—Tang San, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun—were all nodding seriously, glaring at Cohen like wronged lovers.

Austine instinctively wanted to argue, "You're not dogs—how could you understand a dog's joy?" but thankfully, his brain functioned in time, and he changed it to:

"I think you guys just want to take Cohen's place."

Ma Hongjun immediately replied without hesitation, "Of course!"

The others nodded as well.

Only after answering instinctively did Dai Mubai, Oscar, Ma Hongjun, and Tang San suddenly realize something was off. They froze for two seconds, then glared at each other viciously.

In unison, they shouted, "That's too much! You want all of them?!"

"What's wrong with wanting all of them? That's the normal reaction!" Ma Hongjun said confidently.

"Don't talk nonsense—I only want Zhu Zhuqing/Ning Rongrong/Xiao Wu," said Dai Mubai, Oscar, and Tang San respectively.

Then the three of them exchanged glances and said, "Very well, we can be teammates."

Immediately afterward, all three turned to glare fiercely at Ma Hongjun, their eyes clearly saying, "You've got some nerve!"

Ma Hongjun immediately chickened out and tried to slip away, but the other three grabbed him and dragged him toward the nearby grove—

And Tang San, acting like an expert, even stuffed a cloth into Ma Hongjun's mouth.
