Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Viserys Catching a Cat

As the sun rose, the one-eared black cat hissed at Viserys.

Viserys was wearing a studded leather jerkin and had no weapon in his hand.

Braavos is generally at a higher latitude than King's Landing, so the temperature is lower and the weather is gloomier, but Viserys had long since adapted.

Pentos is at the same latitude as King's Landing and is also the closest city-state to it.

It was relatively simple for the fat Illyrio to cross the Narrow Sea to meet the Spider.

Viserys exhaled slowly, listening to his heartbeat, and walked in special flat-soled soft shoes; he had to master balance and coordination.

Logically, he should have chased barefoot, but Viserys was not as wild as Arya.

Water Dance is best suited for children aged seven or eight, and Viserys, now fourteen, was only just beginning his preliminary training, making him an overage trainee.

However, Viserys also had a cheat: the attribute panel and the enhancement of various attributes allowed him to grasp the essence of Water Dance.

Swift as a deer, silent as a shadow, quick as a snake, still as water, strong as a bear, fierce as a wolf, unmoving as stone.

This is the highest realm of a Water Dancer.

The black cat, Balerion, watched Viserys approach, its eyes full of wariness.

In the past, the Red Keep was full of cats, but this black cat was the most cunning.

According to Viserys's observations, the lazy old cats and the noble ladies' cats were weaker, while kittens and wild cats were the wildest and fastest.

When the bearded, bald Moro discovered the black cat's remarkable abilities, he began training Viserys to catch it.

It wasn't easy; although the black cat didn't bite or scratch Viserys, it was agile and wouldn't let Viserys catch it.

Viserys had tried many times, and this time, he felt certain he would succeed.

The Water Dancer training focused on improving Viserys's agility attribute; other attributes also improved, but agility was the fastest.

Because the entire Water Dancer training is based on balance and speed.

Viserys chased the one-eared black cat's shadow, running all over the courtyard.

The black cat would appear everywhere: the kitchen, the laundry room, the garden, the rooftop, and even the sewer openings.

Even inside the Red House, Viserys had a great time chasing it.

Silent as a shadow, light as a feather, Viserys followed the Water Dancer's rules, slowly approaching the black cat in the garden.

When they were very close, the black cat suddenly moved. First to the left, then to the right.

Viserys moved with it, blocking the black cat's escape route.

The black cat suddenly hissed, trying to dart between Viserys's legs.

Viserys was quick-eyed and quick-handed, swift as a snake, and finally caught the black cat.

Viserys held up the black cat; this was the first time he had caught it, but not the last.

He would continue such training in the future, only faster and stronger.

"I finally succeeded!" Viserys happily held the black cat above his head. The black cat hissed in displeasure, but it didn't scratch or bite Viserys.

Sweaty, Viserys then placed the black cat down at his feet.

In another part of the garden, on a spiral staircase prop that resembled a spinning top, Rhaenys was standing on one leg, maintaining her balance.

This was originally Viserys's prop, but now Rhaenys was using it too.

Balance training, cat-catching training, and perception training—a Water Dancer must undergo such rigorous training to excel.

Viserys applied some Myrish Fire to himself; although he had no scars on his face, his knees still needed ointment due to falls and tumbles.

The Myrish Fire truly felt like a raging fire, intensely hot.

"I think its agility might be related to warging," Viserys said.

Wargs' consciousness typically enters an animal's body, controlling its behavior.

Warging into human bodies is strictly forbidden, but there are certainly some madmen willing to do it, like Euron Greyjoy.

"Is that so?" Rhaenys wasn't entirely sure.

However, the fact that the black cat lived longer than other cats was a clear observation.

Viserys had also conducted his own research, finding that animals truly lived longer after a warg's consciousness entered them.

If a warg's soul remained within it, the animal would live for a very long time.

This could only lead to discussions of magic, because, logically, the aging of an animal's body is a natural progression, yet the warg slowed this trend.

For example, Bloodraven's ravens still harbored the lingering souls of the Children of the Forest.

However, under magic, even people like the Red Priestess, who survive on elements without eating or drinking, exist, so wargs aren't that strange... Besides the repetitive training, today Viserys's partner, the "swordswoman," also came to Viserys's courtyard with Moro.

Compared to their first meeting, the courtesan now exuded a sense of triumph and success.

The courtesan now looked at Viserys as if he were her cash cow. Originally only a second-tier swordswoman, she had now made a name for herself.

Braavos's identity as a city of sailors and merchants meant that songs reminiscing about home or recalling love could accurately strike a chord with most people.

The songs were also widely sung and realistic.

The swordswoman didn't come alone; she also brought a hefty amount of gold coins. The commission the swordswoman mentioned was paid in full.

"One hundred gold dragons, Your Majesty Viserys," the swordswoman said. "I've had a lot more business lately, and this is what you deserve."

The swordswoman was, after all, a generous courtesan, not the type to be awkward or timid; she was sure to have a great future ahead of her.

"Thank you for your generosity." Viserys, naturally, didn't stand on ceremony. If he had collaborated with the Nightingale on this project, he would have earned even more.

Viserys's expenses in Braavos were indeed high, to maintain his food, clothing, and daily necessities, and to keep up with his Water Dance progress.

His mansion, his servants, the sea snails he frequently purchased recently, and the Myrish Fire liqueur he bought all cost a considerable sum.

"This is what we agreed upon," the swordswoman smiled slightly.

"Moro tells me your Water Dance is also progressing by leaps and bounds. It seems you truly are a genius," the swordswoman said.

The swordswoman's beautiful eyes sparkled; she had initially thought Viserys was just playing around, but she never expected him to truly be a multi-talented individual.

A great gourmand, a literary giant, a genius assassin—this exiled king truly was the legendary treasure boy.

Even Moro privately praised Viserys; at his age, learning Water Dance should have been very slow, far inferior to a seven or eight-year-old, but Viserys's talent was astonishingly good.

"I am currently looking for the Westerosi instructor you asked me to find, and I believe a suitable candidate will be found very soon," the swordswoman assured him.

"No hurry. Not only must their skills be good, but their character must also be loyal," Viserys said.

He was currently immersed in his Water Dance progress, so his demands for the Iron Dance were not as urgent.

"The song I wrote for you earlier has already made you very popular. I think we can strike while the iron is hot."

"You... you already have new works so quickly?" The swordswoman's eyes widened. She certainly had this intention, but she hadn't expected Viserys's creativity to have no downtime at all.

Viserys smiled slightly. This was no joke; his inventory was limitless.

Mainly, he was still short on money, and now he needed more gold.
