Chapter 22 - Chapter 021: Captain's Replacement

After Gosuke Shigure returned to the Eleventh Division, the atmosphere in Bride Town began to change.

Although the entire division was still shrouded in sorrow over the downfall of their captain, Kenpachi Azashiro, daily operations had to continue. Under Shigure's command, order slowly returned to the Eleventh Division.

He had already been the one managing most of the internal affairs before Azashiro's imprisonment, and the transition of authority was almost seamless. Shigure knew better than anyone that if the Eleventh Division sank into grief for too long, they would lose the very identity that defined them — the division that lived and died by the sword.

And so, missions resumed. Training continued.

As one of the Gotei 13's primary combat squads, the Eleventh Division was responsible for repelling the hollows that slipped into Soul Society. The moment Menos Grande appeared in Rukongai, Shigure personally led the response team.

The battles were frequent, and brutal.

Yet, this time was different.

Before, with Kenpachi Azashiro standing at the frontlines, Shigure could remain behind, coordinating strategies and ensuring the division's readiness. But now, with the captain gone, there was no one else capable of taking the vanguard against large-scale hollow incursions.

If he, the vice-captain, didn't step forward, the Eleventh Division's reputation would fall.

And so, Gosuke Shigure took up the responsibility.

When the reports of hollows appeared again near northern Rukongai, he went alone to meet them. The Menos Grande, six Gillians in total, loomed tall like towers, their mouths releasing thunderous roars that shook the air.

Shigure stepped into the air using Shunpo, his expression calm. The next instant, arcs of lightning flickered around his blade.

When the storm subsided, all six Gillians collapsed simultaneously, their masks split in perfect symmetry.

The members of the Eleventh Division who had followed behind arrived only in time to see the bodies fall apart.

For a brief moment, they were speechless.

Then came disbelief.

And then, awe.

Many of the seated officers realized that their vice-captain had long surpassed what they imagined. They had seen Shigure work quietly in the background, but never unleash his true might. Now, they understood why Kenpachi Azashiro had trusted him so deeply.

Still, some couldn't help but murmur among themselves.

"Even if he can slay Gillian with one strike… that's still a long way from Kenpachi."

After all, Gillians were the lowest among the Menos. In comparison, the former captain, Kuruyashiki, had slain a Vasto Lorde in single combat, and Kenpachi Azashiro himself had easily annihilated adjuchas-class hollows.

But for all their talk, Shigure's action that day restored something far more important than their pride, their morale.

The Eleventh Division had finally begun to move again.

And as Soul Society entered another period of unrest, they would need that strength more than ever.

Hueco Mundo's invasions had grown increasingly bold. Vasto Lorde-class hollows crossed into Soul Society more than once, while lower-level hollows and Gillians appeared almost daily. In these conditions, the Eleventh Division's battle duties surged beyond anything they had seen before.

Even Shigure, who was already fighting relentlessly, couldn't protect everyone. Some fell in battle. Some didn't return.

Yet no one complained.

Every member of the Eleventh Division joined knowing that their life would end on the battlefield. They considered it an honor to die wielding their swords.

After each funeral, after the names of the fallen were carved into the memorial stone, the survivors would raise their sake cups, laugh bitterly, and return to duty.

That was the Eleventh Division's way.

...

Months passed in this rhythm of battle and silence.

Half a year later, news arrived from Central 46.

The long-delayed trial of Kenpachi Azashiro had finally concluded.

The bureaucratic machinery of the nobles had moved painfully slow. For months, the forty-six sages and judges had argued endlessly over how to sentence the man who once bore the name Kenpachi. The debates were less about justice and more about politics — every noble wanted to prove their influence, none willing to stain their hands by making the final call.

Only now did they reach a consensus.

Kenpachi Azashiro was sentenced to eternal imprisonment in the lowest level of the Central Underground Prison — Muken.

It was a verdict that shook even the higher captains.

Muken was reserved for beings too powerful to be executed — a place where time, space, and reiatsu were suppressed to the point that even the strongest souls would fade into silence. For a man once hailed as the strongest swordsman in the Gotei 13 to end up there was a tragedy that would echo for centuries.

But Central 46 was unmoved. Their judgment was law.

When the news reached the Eleventh Division, the members received it in grim silence. Some cursed softly. Others raised their cups again in bitter memory.

Shigure simply bowed his head.

It wasn't pity, just quiet acknowledgment.

He had once fought beside that man. He had also crossed blades with him.

He knew what kind of monster Kenpachi Azashiro truly was — both brilliant and broken. His downfall, like his strength, was inevitable.

That same week, the Captains' Council convened inside the First Division's meeting hall.

The grand tatami floor gleamed under the light of suspended spirit lamps. The captains of all thirteen divisions stood in two rows, their haori fluttering faintly from the air of Yamamoto Genryusai's overwhelming reiatsu.

"The judgment of Azashiro Soya has concluded." the old man began, his voice a deep growl that filled the hall. "By decree of Central 46, he shall be confined eternally within Muken."

No one spoke.

Even among captains, the name "Kenpachi" carried weight. It was more than a title — it was a symbol of Soul Society's primal strength. To see one fall was to be reminded of their own mortality.

After a long pause, Yamamoto continued.

"There is another matter. The captain of the Fifth Division, due to injuries accumulated in past service, has tendered his resignation. Central 46 has approved his retirement."

Several captains exchanged glances. The Fifth Division had been stable for decades — any change in its leadership would ripple across the structure of Gotei 13.

Yamamoto raised his eyes.

"After formal assessment, it has been decided that Vice-Captain Hirako Shinji will assume the position of Captain of the Fifth Division."

The sliding door opened, and a young man with long blond hair stepped inside, his manner relaxed but his Reiatsu sharp. When he smiled, one canine tooth gleamed like ivory.

"Yo," Hirako said casually. "Sorry for the delay."

A faint chuckle rippled through the captains' line. They all knew him — a man whose power had long surpassed his rank.

"Hirako Shinji," Yamamoto said gravely, "from this day forward, you are recognized as the Fifth Division's captain."

"Yes, sir." Shinji replied with a lazy salute.

When the murmurs died down, Yamamoto turned the page on the scroll in his hand.

"The Fifth Division matter is concluded. Now we address the vacancy within the Eleventh Division."
