Chapter 23 - Chapter 022: The Kenpachi Candidate

Kenpachi — the title bestowed upon the strongest shinigami in all of Soul Society.

It was not merely a rank, but a creed carved into the bones of the Eleventh Division. To bear that name meant to live for battle, to die by the sword, and to carry the legacy of every warrior who came before.

Though all captains of the Gotei 13 were formidable, the captain of the Eleventh Division had always been something different — something far more primal. That difference could be seen clearly in how their successors were chosen.

For most divisions, succession was simple: an assessment led by the Head-Captain, approval from a majority of captains, and recognition from Central 46. Political, measured, stable.

But for the Eleventh Division, politics meant nothing.

Only blood could decide the next Kenpachi.

To succeed the title, one had to defeat — and kill — the current Kenpachi in battle. It was the single, deliberate exception to the Soul Society's absolute law: the prohibition against killing fellow shinigami.

The reason was simple.

Each generation of Kenpachi was expected to be stronger than the last.

Kuruyashiki had slain his predecessor to become the Seventh Kenpachi. Azashiro Soya — the man known for his quiet ruthlessness — had killed Kuruyashiki in turn, becoming the Eighth.

But now, that chain was broken.

Kenpachi Azashiro was not dead. He lived still, sealed away in Muken — the deepest prison beneath Soul Society.

And so, a question hung in the air:

If the Eighth Kenpachi yet lived, who would become the Ninth?

The atmosphere in the First Division's grand hall was heavy with unspoken uncertainty. The Captains' Meeting had convened, and even among these titans of the Gotei 13, unease lingered.

Hirako Shinji, the newly appointed captain of the Fifth Division, leaned forward and broke the silence.

"I know a bit about the Eleventh's succession rule." he began, his tone half-wary, half-curious. "Since Azashiro Soya isn't dead, that rule can't apply. It's impossible to produce a new Kenpachi under those conditions. But… this seat can't remain empty forever. Whoever inherits it needs to be someone who can truly carry the name."

"Then how do we choose the next Kenpachi?" asked one of the younger captains.

At that question, several pairs of eyes turned instinctively toward Unohana Retsu — the serene captain of the Fourth Division.

Unohana's expression remained perfectly calm. Her eyes opened slightly, cold and unreadable beneath her long lashes.

"It is true that the Eleventh Division follows that old rule." she said softly. "But not all Kenpachi were chosen by killing the previous one."

"Oh?" Shinji raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "That makes sense. Before the First Kenpachi appeared, there was no title to inherit. So, by that logic, not every Kenpachi had to be born through bloodshed."

At the mention of the First Kenpachi, a flicker of something — nostalgia, or perhaps an old, buried shadow — passed through Unohana's eyes. It was gone an instant later, replaced by her usual composure.

"Compared to whether Azashiro Soya still lives," she said, "the greater question is whether we currently have anyone capable of bearing the name."

That struck a chord.

Yamamoto Genryusai's gaze swept across the hall, his ancient eyes sharp beneath his heavy brows. The room fell silent once more.

Ukitake Jushiro was the first to nod. "Captain Unohana is right. That's the real problem here. We need strength — not ceremony."

Among the Gotei 13, power was abundant. Many vice-captains possessed the strength to lead. Hirako Shinji himself had ascended easily. Even Sasakibe Chojiro, the First Division's long-serving vice-captain, had enough power to be considered captain-class.

But strength alone wasn't enough.

The Eleventh Division demanded something more.

Someone who could face death with a smile. Someone who lived only for combat — who could make even the most battle-hardened warriors lower their swords in awe.

And that narrowed the list to almost no one.

"I have a suggestion." Kyoraku Shunsui said suddenly.

Dozens of eyes turned toward him.

The captain of the Eighth Division smiled lazily, tilting his straw hat back as though he'd been waiting for the right moment to speak.

"Oh?" Hirako grinned faintly. "Who's the lucky one, old man?"

Yamamoto's low rumble followed. "Speak, Shunsui."

Shunsui's usual carefree tone softened into something more deliberate. "Vice-Captain Gosuke Shigure of the Eleventh Division."

The room froze.

For a moment, no one spoke. Then murmurs rippled through the air.

"Gosuke Shigure…"

That name was familiar to all of them. Though young compared to the veterans, he had already served under two Kenpachi — Kuruyashiki and Azashiro. A constant presence in one of the most volatile squads in the Gotei 13.

But there was another reason everyone knew his name.

"If I recall correctly," said Shihouin Awayuki, the imposing captain of the Second Division, his deep voice echoing, "before Kenpachi Azashiro turned himself in, the last person to have contact with him was Gosuke Shigure."

Shunsui nodded slightly. "That's correct. He was detained afterward for suspicion, but when Central 46 confirmed Azashiro's confession, Shigure was cleared of all charges."

"Even so," said another captain, skeptical, "what ability does he have to claim the name of Kenpachi?"

Shunsui's reply was calm. "He defeated Kenpachi Azashiro."

The room erupted.

"What!?"

"You're joking!"

"Impossible—he fought him?"

But if they expected Shunsui's usual teasing grin, they found none. His face was deadly serious.

"Not only did he fight him," Shunsui continued, "he brought him back to Seireitei with his own hands. Before Azashiro surrendered, I was there. We went together."

Shock spread through the room like wildfire.

The captains turned to Unohana again — searching for confirmation.

Her answer came in her usual soft, even voice. "It's true. Kenpachi Azashiro was brought to my division. His injuries were severe when he arrived. I treated him myself."

That single statement silenced the hall.

Unohana Retsu was known for her precision; she never exaggerated. If she said Kenpachi was seriously wounded, then it meant his injuries had been catastrophic.

But that raised another question.

If the man who bore the title of Kenpachi had been brought to the Fourth Division half-dead — then who else but Gosuke Shigure could have been the one to put him in that state?
