Chapter 25: The Dementor Incident
Late October brought the first Hogsmeade weekend and Adam's carefully forged permission slip, complete with Marcus Wright's fictional signature courtesy of the System's document creation services. The prospect of escape from castle scrutiny felt like parole after months of imprisonment, and he joined Daphne and Tracey for their first expedition into the magical village that served Hogwarts students.
Hogsmeade bustled with weekend energy—students sampling sweets at Honeydukes, browsing joke items at Zonko's, nursing butterbeers at the Three Broomsticks while complaining about upcoming exams. Adam absorbed it all with the hunger of someone who'd spent too long watching life through windows, grateful for normalcy even if it was temporary.
"I need to grab some supplies at Zonko's," he told Daphne as they finished lunch. "Meet you at Honeydukes in twenty minutes?"
"Don't buy anything that'll get us detention," she warned, but her smile suggested she wouldn't mind a little harmless mischief.
Adam pushed through Zonko's crowded aisles, examining dungbombs and joke wands while his mind catalogued escape routes and defensive positions with the automatic paranoia of someone who'd learned that safety was always temporary. The habit had kept him alive on London's streets, and Hogwarts required the same vigilance despite its welcoming facade.
Then the temperature plummeted.
Not autumn cold, but something deeper—a chill that went beyond physical sensation and invaded the soul itself. The laughter died in Zonko's cramped interior as customers looked around with growing unease, their breath misting in air that had been warm moments before.
Through the shop window, Adam saw them.
Three Dementors glided down Hogsmeade's main street like specters from humanity's darkest nightmares, their hooded forms radiating despair that made children cry and adults remember every failure, every loss, every moment when hope had died. They were searching for Sirius Black, but their presence poisoned everyone nearby with existential dread.
"Dumbledore's mental violation. Mrs. Brennan's fists. Sleeping on frozen streets while my stomach ate itself. Being nobody, mattering to no one, dying alone—"
The memories crashed over Adam like a tsunami of accumulated trauma, each one perfectly preserved and poisonous. His hand fumbled for his wand while panic threatened to overwhelm rational thought. Around him, other students collapsed to their knees, sobbing at the weight of their own suppressed anguish.
From somewhere nearby came a familiar voice crying out in agony—Harry Potter, collapsing under Dementor influence that triggered memories of his parents' murder.
"The Patronus Charm. I bought it weeks ago. Mist form, fifteen hundred SP, barely functional but better than nothing."
Adam raised his shaking wand, reaching desperately for his happiest memory. Not the first time he'd cast magic—too small. Not escaping the orphanage—relief wasn't joy. The moment he'd passed through Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. The barrier that had once rejected him dissolving like mist, revealing the world where he belonged.
"Expecto Patronum!"
Silver light exploded from his wand—not the wispy tendrils of a beginner's attempt, but a surge of protective energy that drove the nearest Dementor back with visible reluctance. The creature's hood turned toward him, sensing the anomaly of happiness in its presence, before Professor Lupin arrived like salvation made flesh.
"Expecto Patronum!"
Lupin's corporeal Patronus—a magnificent wolf that bounded through the air with fierce joy—scattered all three Dementors like smoke before wind. The oppressive cold lifted, leaving behind traumatized students and the lingering taste of despair.
"Everyone back to the castle," Lupin commanded, his voice carrying absolute authority. "Immediately."
As students stumbled toward the carriages, Lupin noticed Adam standing with his wand still raised, residual silver mist fading around him like dissipating starlight.
"Mr. Wright—did you cast a Patronus?"
Adam's mind raced through options. Deny the obvious truth? Admit to capabilities that would draw unwanted attention? He chose partial honesty wrapped in strategic vulnerability.
"Attempted one, sir. My guardian taught me the basics before he died. It wasn't very effective."
Lupin's weathered face showed surprise mixed with something approaching respect. "The Patronus Charm is NEWT-level magic, Mr. Wright. Very few adults can cast even the mist form you managed. That your guardian taught you such advanced magic suggests remarkable foresight."
"Or System-purchased knowledge, but we can't mention that."
"Perhaps you should join the extra Defense sessions I'm offering," Lupin continued thoughtfully. "Mr. Potter will be attending as well, given his particular sensitivity to Dementor influence."
Adam's stomach sank. Forced proximity to Harry Potter and Professor Lupin—both observant, both possessing the emotional intelligence to recognize deception. But refusing would seem suspicious, mark him as someone with secrets to hide.
"Of course, Professor. Thank you."
As the shaken students boarded carriages for the return journey, Hermione Granger walked past Adam with calculating eyes. She'd witnessed his Patronus, seen him accomplish magic that should have been beyond a third-year's capabilities.
Another piece of evidence in her growing file of inconsistencies.
That evening in the Slytherin common room, Daphne cornered him near the fireplace where green flames cast shifting shadows across ancient stone.
"You cast a Patronus," she said without preamble, her voice pitched low to avoid eavesdropping. "A third-year transfer student cast a Patronus against Dementors."
Adam attempted deflection. "Barely. It was just mist—"
"Most seventh-years can't manage that." Daphne stepped closer, her blue eyes searching his face for truth. "Adam, who are you really?"
The question hung between them like a blade, sharp with implications. Adam could lie completely, maintain the comfortable distance that kept secrets safe. But Daphne had offered genuine friendship in a world where connections were weapons, and some desperate part of him craved honesty even if it came wrapped in danger.
"Someone who lost everything and had to learn fast to survive," he said carefully, threading truth through necessary deception. "My guardian's death wasn't peaceful—I witnessed it. Learning advanced magic was necessary, not optional."
It was truth shaped to serve lies. His actual "death" had been the end of his previous life, but the emotion was genuine. The need to protect himself, to never again be helpless while others decided his fate.
Daphne studied him for a long moment, her analytical mind processing every detail of his expression and posture.
"I won't pry further," she said finally. "But Adam—you don't have to face everything alone. Whatever you're hiding, some of us would help if you asked."
She left him with that offer, and Adam felt something crack in the careful walls he'd built around his heart. Connection. Dangerous but achingly needed, like sunlight to someone who'd lived too long in darkness.
"She's offering friendship. Real friendship, not political alliance or mutual benefit. When did I last have that?"
That night brought two messages delivered by persistent owls. The first, in Professor Lupin's careful script: "Mr. Wright—Defense lesson Thursday, 7 PM, my office. Professor Lupin."
The second, delivered separately in Hermione's precise handwriting: "I know you're hiding something, Wright. Eventually, I'll figure out what. —Hermione Granger."
Adam crumpled both notes, then carefully smoothed them out again. Lupin's represented opportunity—learning from a skilled teacher, even if exposure came with the territory. Hermione's was pure threat—active investigation by the cleverest student in school.
[NEW MISSION AVAILABLE: SURVIVE INCREASED SCRUTINY]
[REWARD: 3,000 SP]
Adam laughed bitterly at the System's understated description. Survive. That's all he'd been doing since the moment he'd awakened with impossible memories in an orphanage bed. What else was new?
