Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Art of Appearing Normal

Chapter 24: The Art of Appearing Normal

October brought falling leaves and Adam's systematic campaign to appear mediocre. In Transfiguration, he deliberately botched a mouse-to-snuffbox conversion, producing a snuffbox that squeaked and had whiskers. In Potions, he "accidentally" added powdered moonstone thirty seconds too early, creating a Cure for Boils that worked perfectly but turned the patient's skin temporarily purple.

Professor McGonagall frowned at his declining performance. "Mr. Wright, your initial demonstration suggested considerable skill. Are you having difficulty adjusting to our teaching methods?"

"I think my guardian's approach was quite different from institutional learning," Adam replied, injecting uncertainty into his voice. "I'm trying to adapt, but sometimes I second-guess myself."

It was a plausible explanation that satisfied McGonagall while providing cover for future "mistakes." Academic mediocrity, Adam discovered, was harder to maintain than excellence—it required careful calculation to appear struggling without seeming incompetent.

His social integration proved more successful. He formed a quiet study group with Daphne Greengrass, Tracey Davis, and Theodore Nott—Slytherins who valued competence without demanding constant proof of superiority. They worked together on assignments, shared notes, and gradually developed the easy familiarity that passed for friendship among ambitious teenagers.

"You're different from most Slytherins," Daphne observed one evening as they researched Defense essays in the common room. "Less... performatively vicious."

"My guardian believed strength didn't require cruelty," Adam replied carefully. "Power that needs to prove itself constantly isn't really power at all."

Theodore looked up from his Arithmancy calculations. "Interesting philosophy. Most pure-blood families teach that dominance is the only currency that matters."

"Maybe that's why so many of them are miserable," Tracey added, glancing toward the corner where Draco held court with Crabbe and Goyle. "All that effort spent maintaining superiority leaves little energy for actual achievement."

"I like these people. They think beyond house stereotypes."

But Draco Malfoy's attention was becoming harder to avoid. The Malfoy heir had begun asking questions—subtle at first, then increasingly direct—about Adam's background and family connections. When those inquiries yielded nothing useful, Draco's approach shifted to open challenge.

"Wright." Draco's voice carried across the common room one evening, silencing other conversations. "I've been asking around about you. Nobody's heard of your 'guardian' Marcus Wright. What kind of wizard leaves no trace in our society?"

The common room fell silent, other Slytherins sensing drama and positioning themselves to observe the confrontation. Adam remained seated, his posture relaxed despite the spike of adrenaline that accompanied public challenge.

"The kind who valued privacy over fame," he replied evenly. "Not everyone seeks attention, Malfoy."

Draco's pale eyes narrowed with satisfaction—he'd successfully provoked a response.

"My father says unknowns are usually hiding something. Probably half-blood filth pretending to be respectable."

Adam's hand moved toward his wand almost without conscious thought, magic crackling unconsciously around his fingers. The air in the common room grew charged, other students backing away instinctively from the tension.

"Don't rise to it. That's what he wants—proof that you're unstable, unworthy, different."

Before the situation could escalate, Daphne intervened with the casual authority of someone born to navigate pure-blood politics.

"Draco, leave him alone." Her voice carried no heat, but her tone suggested consequences for persistence. "The Sorting Hat put him in Slytherin—that's endorsement enough for anyone who matters."

The tension broke like a snapped bowstring. Draco sneered but couldn't openly contradict the Hat's judgment without undermining the entire house system. He returned to his corner with wounded pride, but the hostility was now open and acknowledged.

"Thanks," Adam murmured to Daphne.

"He's a bully," she replied simply. "And bullies only understand strength."

But that night, Adam used precious SP to purchase additional identity reinforcement—documents, records, witness testimonies that would deepen his false history's paper trail. Two thousand points to strengthen lies that were already showing cracks under scrutiny.

[CURRENT SP: 8,800]

"Eight months of missions and sales, gone to maintain a fiction. But if Lucius Malfoy starts investigating..."

The thought was interrupted by morning's Daily Prophet, delivered by post owls that filled the Great Hall with rustling wings and excited chatter. Adam barely glanced at the headline before his blood turned to arctic water:

"SIRIUS BLACK SIGHTED NEAR HOGSMEADE—DEMENTORS INCREASE PATROLS"

The Prisoner of Azkaban timeline had begun.

Adam stared at the newspaper, his mind racing through everything he knew about the coming year. Sirius would break into the castle. Dementors would hunt through Hogwarts' corridors. Peter Pettigrew would be revealed as the true traitor who'd betrayed the Potters. And Harry would learn the truth about his godfather's innocence.

"I know what's coming. I know who the real criminal is. I know how to save lives and prevent suffering."

But the gibberish curse ensured his knowledge remained locked behind a barrier of nonsense that would make him sound insane to anyone who mattered. The frustration was overwhelming—having the power to prevent tragedy while being unable to use it.

Adam folded the newspaper carefully and finished his breakfast in silence. Another crisis was approaching, and once again, he'd be forced to watch from the shadows while others suffered for crimes he could prevent.

Unless he found a way to act without speaking. Unless he learned to protect from darkness while letting others claim the light.

The war was far from over. In fact, it was about to escalate dramatically.
