Chapter 595 - The Spoils of War

Though severely wounded, the fallen cloaked predator had not entirely lost its life force. Its grotesque, mask-covered head shifted slightly, letting out a low, agonizing growl. Fangs bared from the parts of its lower jaw left uncovered by the mask, and dark blood seeped from multiple lacerations. Its one intact arm struggled heavily to reach toward the complex device integrated into its wrist, its fingertips trembling as they fumbled over a glowing glyph—distinctly the activation interface for some form of self-destruct sequence.

"Stay back!" Maine barked sharply, stopping Tsu'tey and several soldiers who were about to step forward. "It's trying to trigger a self-destruct!"

At this critical juncture, Neytiri, who had remained highly vigilant, acutely captured the fatal movement. Without a shred of hesitation, she notched and loosed an arrow; the projectile tore through the air, flawlessly impaling the predator's neck.

The hunter's movements froze instantly, a final, choking rattle escaping its throat. Yet, a mere heartbeat before its life fully slipped away, a blinding red light flared from the eye slots of its mask. A narrow beam of light projected from the side of the visor, casting a rapidly flashing string of complex alien glyphs into the air. The symbols hung for a mere two seconds before abruptly vanishing, and simultaneously, the luminescence radiating from its wrist apparatus went completely dark.

"Vital signs terminated," Falco verified, his eyes locked onto his scanner. He quickly added, "But at the final moment, it successfully transmitted an encrypted signal."

Neytiri guided her Ikran down slowly. Staring at the motionless carcass, she calmly sheathed her bow. "It wanted to die with its secrets, but at least we prevented it from destroying everything."

Maine reported via the encrypted link to Osiris: "Target confirmed KIA. It successfully transmitted an unverified signal immediately prior to termination, but the self-destruct sequence was preempted in time by Neytiri. The corpse and its gear remain largely intact."

Only after verifying the area was secure did the joint contingent cautiously circle back. Staring at the lifeless alien entity, everyone fell silent, their minds filled with complex emotions.

Colonel Quaritch monitored the scene remotely through the comms, a distinct urgency permeating his voice. "Outstanding work! Transport that carcass and every scrap of its gear back to base immediately! We have to find out exactly where the hell this thing came from!"

Eytukan, having caught up with the vanguard, was far more occupied with the sacrifice of his kin. Looking sorrowfully at the fallen hunters, he turned his gaze toward the alien predator's carcass, his tone heavy. "We paid in the blood of our warriors to secure this result. May Eywa soothe the spirits of the departed."

Tsu'tey strode over to the alien carcass, violently kicking the rigid form to vent his fury, but a warning glance from Maine checked any further action. He spat bitterly on the ground. "Death was too good for it!"

With the skirmish concluded, the allocation of the spoils instantly emerged as a new point of friction. The RDA adamantly insisted on securing the intact corpse and technology for research, while the Na'vi maintained that this was the shared harvest of a joint engagement—and given the devastating sacrifices they had endured, they held every right to understand the truth behind the threat.

Just as the preliminary cracks of a dispute began to surface, Osiris's directive was delivered through Maine at the opportune moment: "The 'Seekers of Knowledge' will assume responsibility for the primary analysis and custody of the target. We will share non-core research intelligence with both factions. This is currently the most efficient framework to circumvent conflict."

Given the exploration team's role in brokering the truce, delivering critical reconnaissance, providing technical support, and the sheer combat prowess they had displayed, this compromise was ultimately, reluctantly accepted by both sides. After all, everyone was acutely aware that without the intervention of the "Seekers of Knowledge," they would very likely still be slaughtering one another or being systematically picked off by the cloaked hunter.

The alien predator's carcass and its surviving equipment were carefully sealed, with Maine's squad assuming responsibility for transporting the payload back to the Pioneer.

With the common adversary eliminated, the fragile peace flanking the river valley instantly became precarious once more. The Na'vi and RDA contingents pulled back to secure a safe distance, the previously suppressed hatred and vigilance resurfacing to the theater.

Eytukan looked toward Quaritch's direction, his voice deep. "Sky Person, the accounts between us remain unsettled. But today... you have my gratitude for fighting at our side." This was the maximum concessions of a diplomatic gesture he could manage.

Colonel Quaritch scoffed, his tone remaining stiff. "Likewise, blue—Eytukan. Remember, this truce is strictly temporary. Don't go looking for trouble until we sort out this mess."

The joint operation was concluded. The fragile alliance forged on the foundation of a shared hazard dissipated as rapidly as the morning mist of Pandora once the objective was secured. The residual scent of gunpowder in the air had not entirely dissolved, yet it was supplanted by an even denser re-emergence of distrust and historical grievances.

However, the experience of standing side by side against an unknown, formidable adversary had ultimately etched an unignorable trace within the minds of both factions. They had jointly witnessed a level of cruelty and power that transcended racial boundaries, understanding that beneath the shadows of this vast, mysterious forest, the latent threats extended far beyond one another.

The Omatikaya clan silently gathered the remains of their brave warriors, supported their wounded companions, and once again stepped onto the migration route toward the sacred mountains. The atmosphere within their ranks grew progressively heavier; the grief of losing their home had not been smoothed over, and now new blood and sacrifice had been added to the tally. Yet, within their pure sorrow, a gravity born from brutal combat and a deeper level of vigilance toward the unknown environment had taken root. They still viewed the Sky People as invaders, but now, the roster of invaders seemingly required the addition of an even more uncanny, inexplicable presence.

The RDA forces also consolidated their formation, escorting the casualties onto the transport vehicles to begin their withdrawal back to Hell's Gate. Colonel Quaritch stood his ground, casting a profound glance toward the jungle where the Na'vi had vanished, before turning his gaze toward the quietly anchored Pioneer mobile base. He had secured a valuable window of unhindered respite, temporarily freeing his operations from the threat of large-scale Na'vi harassment. Yet at the same time, the boundaries of his perception had been forcibly expanded, exposing him to a wider, more unsettling cosmic landscape—humanity was not unique, nor were they guaranteed to remain the apex predator.

For Osiris within the Pioneer, while this sudden third-party interference had disrupted the progressive pacing of his structural layout to a certain extent, it had yielded an unexpectedly bountiful harvest. He had successfully utilized the crisis to temporarily de-escalate an imminent, all-out war between the Na'vi and the RDA, securing more abundant time and a stabler external environment for his long-term objectives.

More importantly, he had secured an exceptionally priceless "gift"—an almost completely intact, high-tech extraterrestrial biological specimen.
