Chapter 35: Slaying the Pirate!
The flames between the town's houses raged wildly, but in the next moment, they surged upward and vanished—sucked clean into Pandora's burning form.
Within seconds, the inferno that had consumed the town was gone. The pirates who had been looting froze, staring in disbelief at the strange sight above. Pandora hovered in the sky, grinning mischievously.
"What the hell is that thing!?" one pirate shouted in panic.
"Don't mind it! Take the loot and run!" their captain barked, swinging his blade and cutting down the owner of a nearby dojo who had tried to resist.
"Captain, someone's coming," a tall pirate said, gripping a massive hammer in both hands. He was nearly four meters tall, his muscles tense with Haki.
"This is the New World," the captain replied coldly. "If he's in our way, kill him. Just make sure that flying freak doesn't interfere."
But when he glanced up again, the fiery being had vanished.
"What? Where did it go?"
As the captain scanned the sky, the dusk light dimmed, the town swallowed by eerie silence.
That silence broke with a wet, metallic sound.
A flash of green light swept across the street—followed by a burst of crimson.
A pirate's head fell from his shoulders, his body collapsing before he even realized what had happened.
Roy stepped out from the shadows, sword gleaming with reflected firelight.
"Careful!" someone screamed.
The giant pirate roared, swinging his hammer down with all his might. The weapon was wrapped in Armament Haki, its black sheen gleaming under the faint light.
Roy met the strike head-on. With one hand, he swung his sword through another pirate, slicing him clean in half. With his other, he caught the descending hammer in his bare palm.
"Boom!"
The impact cracked the street beneath his feet, dust and stone scattering. Blood splattered as Roy ripped his sword free and cleaved through another pirate in a single stroke.
The four-meter brute who had swung the hammer was sent flying, smashing through a wall and crashing to the ground with a sickening crunch.
"M-Monster!" the navigator stammered in horror.
"Kill him!" the captain roared. "He's just a brat! Don't let him show you up!"
Dozens of pirates charged at once, eyes filled with killing intent.
But Roy didn't flinch. He raised his sword again and advanced, green light flickering from the blade.
"Clang! Clang! Clang!"
Steel met steel in a flurry of motion. Every time Roy's sword struck, weapons shattered or flew from trembling hands. The pirates' fingers went numb, their faces twisting in terror.
"What kind of monster is this!?"
"He's too strong!"
Roy moved like a storm, cutting down one after another. His sword carved a deadly rhythm—precise, merciless, unstoppable.
"Ni-su-nai!!"
The towering pirate from earlier roared, charging again with his cracked hammer. He swung downward in desperation.
Roy didn't even bother dodging. He raised his left hand and caught the hammer mid-swing, then smashed it apart with a single punch.
The weapon shattered, and before the brute could even react, Roy grabbed his clothes, spun him around, and slammed him headfirst into the ground.
The impact sent blood splattering across the cobblestones. The pirate's skull twisted grotesquely, his body going limp.
Roy turned immediately and stabbed another pirate through the heart, killing him in one clean motion.
"Impressive, kid," came a deep voice.
A pirate with purple hair and a heavy mace stepped forward, his expression calm but his eyes gleaming with danger. "You've got guts. How about joining us?"
He was the captain—the one who possessed both Observation and Armament Haki.
"Pfft…"
The sound of stifled laughter came from nearby.
The captain frowned. "Who's there!?"
"Hahaha! Recruiting Roy? That's rich!" Pandora's voice echoed down the street, full of amusement.
The fiery being's laughter crackled like embers. This was Roy's training, after all. Pandora had no intention of interfering—except to enjoy the show.
"Who are you!?" the pirate captain snarled, his Observation Haki spreading out to sense Pandora's presence. What he found made his heart pound—an entity of pure flame with a faintly human face.
He felt an uncanny familiarity, a dread he couldn't explain.
"Why so much talking?" Roy said flatly, pointing his sword at him. "Just fight."
"Arrogant brat!" The captain roared and swung his mace down, its spikes gleaming with black Haki.
Roy caught the weapon effortlessly with his left hand, gripping one of the spikes. With his right, he thrust his sword forward.
"So strong!" the captain gasped, his pupils shrinking.
His Armament Haki should have protected him—but it felt useless. The boy's power… it reminded him of someone terrifying.
Charlotte Linlin.
That impossible strength. That monstrous defense. And that talking flame.
Realization struck too late.
Roy's blade glowed green and cleaved across his chest. The captain was sent flying, his mace clattering to the ground.
Before he could rise, Roy rushed forward, short legs carrying explosive power, and swung down.
"Clang!"
The captain blocked instinctively—but the next instant, Roy's fist smashed into his forehead.
"Thud!"
The pirate captain's eyes rolled back, his body going limp.
"Puff!"
Roy didn't hesitate. He drove his sword straight through the man's chest, stabbing again and again until the captain stopped breathing.
When the fight ended, only the crackle of fire remained.
"Huff…"
Pandora's flames rose, brightening the dark streets. He turned into a coiling serpent of fire, surrounding the surviving pirates as they tried to flee.
"Don't even think about running."
Pandora's flaming face appeared within the inferno, sneering at them.
The pirates trembled, gripping their weapons with shaking hands.
"As pirates," Roy said, his voice low and cold, "you should understand the price of your choices."
He raised his green-bladed sword once more, firelight gleaming along the edge—and swung.
Steel cut through the air like thunder.
