Chapter 97 - Questioning the Heart (5)

One month later.

Su Yunzhou, which had once resembled a city of the dead, had already regained its vitality.

After a month of tireless effort by Qian Renyue, the plague in Su Yunzhou was quickly brought under control. The common people who had originally been waiting in despair for death were all cured. Relying on her own strength alone, Qian Renyue saved countless families that were on the verge of collapse.

With the plague under control, the people were once again filled with hope for survival. The healthy citizens swiftly threw themselves into the reconstruction of Su Yunzhou. In just one month, the originally desolate and deathly Su Yunzhou was reborn with renewed vitality.

Seeing that the plague in Su Yunzhou had been contained, Qian Renyue and the Grand General prepared to return to Chongmen Prefecture and rejoin the marriage alliance escort.

Upon hearing that Qian Renyue and her group were about to leave, the people of Su Yunzhou all expressed their reluctance to part with them. When the group departed, the entire prefecture's citizens lined the roads to see them off. Even after leaving Su Yunzhou for a hundred li, many warm-hearted people still followed along, offering the most simple gifts they could manage.

Looking at these sincere and enthusiastic citizens, even the usually cold Qian Renyue felt a faint warmth rise in her heart.

After Qian Renyue and her group departed, in order to commemorate her great kindness, the people of Su Yunzhou spontaneously began building a Medicine King Bodhisattva Temple throughout the prefecture, enshrining Qian Renyue for worship.

The Grand General watched as Qian Renyue remained expressionless despite being supported and adored by the masses, and he could not help but feel deep admiration in his heart. Yet Qian Renyue knew clearly that the real difficulties were only just beginning.

Although the journey had been delayed by a month, the delay had a valid reason. The Grand General and the soldiers who had gone to Su Yunzhou together all believed it would not affect the marriage alliance. On the contrary, the princess had saved the people of an entire prefecture by resolving the plague—this could be considered a tremendous merit.

What no one expected was that when Qian Renyue and the others rushed back to Chongmen Prefecture, the marriage escort had already been taken over by a new general. The original Grand General and the others who had accompanied Qian Renyue to Su Yunzhou had been accused of failing in their escort duties, assisting the princess in escaping the marriage, and were even to be arrested on charges of treason.

In the end, Qian Renyue used a firm and uncompromising attitude to protect them, but they were still burdened with guilt. There was nothing Qian Renyue could do but first preserve their lives and think of other solutions later. Although the Grand General and the others felt unwilling and could not understand it, they had no regrets. Instead, they felt even more heartache for Qian Renyue.

Facing increasingly strict surveillance, Qian Renyue's heart remained utterly calm. She only wanted to reach Yunmen Pass as quickly as possible—once there, everything should finally come to an end.

A few days later, the group finally arrived at Yunmen Pass.

During these days, Qian Renyue had been under tight watch. The Grand General and the others who had accompanied her to Su Yunzhou were suffering greatly due to their status as guilty parties. The Grand General had even entertained the thought of joining forces with a few others to rebel and help Qian Renyue escape. However, for the sake of the common people of the Qianjing Dynasty, they ultimately endured it.

When they arrived at Yunmen Pass, what awaited them was not the welcoming marriage delegation from Nanzhao, but an ambush from Nanzhao instead.

Faced with Nanzhao's sudden betrayal, the Qianjing Dynasty suffered heavy losses. In the end, Qian Renyue's escort force fled back into Yunmen Pass in a sorry state, and a great battle was on the verge of breaking out.

Nanzhao's unprovoked declaration of war coincided with Qian Renyue's one-month delay due to her trip to Su Yunzhou. Thus, everyone naturally blamed everything on Qian Renyue.

Her refusal to marry and private escape, ultimately leading to war between Qianjing and Nanzhao, became Qian Renyue's greatest crime. No one mentioned how she had single-handedly saved the people of an entire prefecture in Su Yunzhou just over a month earlier.

Faced with angry crowds who did not know the truth—blocking roads, coming to demand accountability—Qian Renyue could only stay hidden inside the city lord's residence, protected by the former Grand General. Even so, she endured a great deal of scolding and abuse from all sides.

The Grand General often looked at Qian Renyue with heartache. He could not understand how this princess, who had never enjoyed any of the privileges of royalty since childhood, was still required to shoulder a princess's duty of marriage alliance. She had clearly saved so many people, yet was still being condemned like this.

Qian Renyue, however, did not concern herself with what others thought. She continued reading medical texts, researching her medical skills, recording her journey to Su Yunzhou, organizing various possible epidemic scenarios, and compiling response plans and prescriptions.

After the Nanzhao escort force's betrayal, Nanzhao and the Qianjing Dynasty completely tore away all pretenses, and war between the two nations officially began.

As Nanzhao advanced step by step, Yunmen Pass was pushed to the brink of collapse. Just as the pass was about to fall, the Grand General had already prepared to take Qian Renyue and flee—when two forces arrived to reinforce Yunmen Pass.

These two forces consisted of the regular army from Su Yunzhou and a peasant army spontaneously formed by the common people. The crisis at Yunmen Pass was temporarily eased.

However, the Qianjing Dynasty was originally weaker than Nanzhao; otherwise, it would not have resorted to marrying off a princess to exchange for peace. Even with Su Yunzhou's support, internal disunity within the court meant that the reinforcement only bought Yunmen Pass about one more month.

When Yunmen Pass once again faced imminent collapse, Qian Renyue carefully stored away the medical books and prescriptions she had compiled. Under the Grand General's protection, she ascended the walls of Yunmen Pass.

Even at this point, many people still believed that the war between Qianjing and Nanzhao—and the current situation at Yunmen Pass—were all caused by Qian Renyue.

The Nanzhao general was clearly aware that internal discord had arisen in Qianjing due to Qian Renyue. Seeing her on the city walls, he shouted mockingly,"Princess, because you fled the marriage, Nanzhao and the Qianjing Dynasty have come to this state. Does Her Highness have nothing to say?"

Hearing the Nanzhao general's words, some of the uninformed people of Qianjing showed expressions of "so that's how it is," glaring angrily at Qian Renyue atop the walls. Seeing this, the Grand General hurriedly stood beside her to protect her. Yet Qian Renyue's expression remained calm and indifferent, as though everything before her had nothing to do with her.

Just as the Nanzhao forces were feeling smug, the people and soldiers from Su Yunzhou shouted angrily,"You're lying! Her Highness the Princess disregarded her own safety and went to plague-ridden Su Yunzhou to save the people of our entire prefecture. She is our great benefactor! Her Highness saved all of Su Yunzhou—she is the Medicine King Bodhisattva we believe in!"

After hearing the explanation from the people of Su Yunzhou, the others who had been in the dark gradually regained their clarity. Seeing the situation turn unfavorable, the Nanzhao forces hastily continued twisting the truth, pushing all responsibility for the war onto Qian Renyue, trying to make her the target of universal condemnation.

Qian Renyue looked at the sinister-smiling Nanzhao soldiers, the confused people of Qianjing who did not know whom to believe, the Su Yunzhou citizens desperate to vindicate her, and the countless wounded and fallen on the battlefield.

She smiled.

Raising her voice, she said to the Nanzhao forces,"Nanzhao's ambitions have long been obvious. Even if we had arrived on time, we likely would not have escaped your poison. The Qianjing Dynasty is weak, and marrying me off to exchange for temporary peace was foolish to begin with. Now that war has broken out, you actually want to blame everything on me, a single weak woman—how laughable. I, Qian Renyue, Princess Jihe of the Qianjing Dynasty, whether fulfilling the marriage agreement or going to Su Yunzhou to save people from the plague, have no regrets."

She swept her gaze across the crowd and declared loudly,"In this lifetime, everything I have thought and done is worthy of heaven and earth, and worthy of myself. No matter how difficult the road ahead may be, I will remain firm in my heart, protect all those I wish to protect—death holds no regret!"

Feeling the familiar soul power surging within her once more, Qian Renyue raised her right hand, a faint smile curling at her lips."Martial Soul, Possess!"

A pair of pure white wings spread open behind her. Her attire transformed—no longer dressed in traditional robes, her hair came loose, white-gold hair flowing freely. Her red skirt turned into a white-gold palace dress. Floating in midair, Qian Renyue clasped her hands together in a prayer-like gesture, her crimson lips parting softly:

"Sixth Soul Skill: Angel's Blessing—Grace of Nourishment, Revival of All Things, Spring's Benediction."

As her words fell, the wounds of all the injured soldiers before Yunmen Pass instantly healed. The injuries of the civilians bravely resisting the enemy were also completely restored. Even the broken walls and ruins of Yunmen Pass returned to their original state.

Faced with such a scene, the people of the Qianjing Dynasty immediately knelt to the ground, gazing reverently at their princess, thanking the divine being for bestowing this miracle.

The people of Nanzhao trembled in fear. They could hardly imagine that the princess of the Qianjing Dynasty was a deity, capable of restoring the wounded to their original state.

The war between the two nations ended at that very moment.

Qian Renyue knew that her trial had also come to an end. Spreading her wings, she flew toward the horizon, no longer paying attention to the people kneeling behind her and calling out her name. To Qian Renyue, they were merely illusions encountered during the trial. Only the family she truly needed to grow stronger to protect was real.

"Qian Renyue, Life Nine Trials—Third Trial: Questioning the Heart.Firm will, carrying through the path in your heart from beginning to end. Such strength of resolve is rare.
