Amara woke up to the sound of her phone buzzing somewhere under her pillow. It wasn't a soft, civilized buzz either. It was the aggressive kind, like the phone was personally offended that she wasn't answering. For three seconds, she tried to pretend it wasn't happening. Another two seconds passed before reality elbowed her conscience.
She fumbled around, her hair sticking everywhere, and finally dragged the phone out.
Penny's name lit up the screen.
Great. When Penny called this early, it rarely meant anything good. Amara pressed the answer button and croaked something like, "Mm?"
"Amara! Finally," Penny half-whispered, half-hissed, probably crouching behind a cart like she always did when gossiping. "You need to come to the office. As in now. Like right now."
Amara blinked at the wall in front of her. Her brain needed a moment, still lagging like an old PC booting after a power outage.
