Sallie's POV
I learned later what had happened that evening. Kevin had locked himself away in his study since returning from the office, his mood darker than a storm cloud. The tension radiating from behind that closed door kept everyone at a safe distance—everyone except Jill.
She knew her privileged position in that family better than anyone. While the rest of the household tiptoed around Kevin's obvious fury, Jill strolled right up to his study door, milk glass in hand.
"Get out," Kevin's voice cut through the air like a blade before he even bothered to look up.
From what I pieced together, Jill's practiced smile cracked, her eyes instantly welling with tears as she froze in the doorway.
Kevin's head snapped up, and seeing Jill standing there, his harsh expression softened despite the anger still simmering beneath the surface.
"Jill, why didn't you knock before coming in?"
