I knew (T/N) couldn't sleep, the memory of the subway, the truth of everything, would keep him awake at 3:45 in the morning, I knew what he was planning.
He was thinking of a stupid plan, running away from me, leaving the house without me seeing him, to go to the subway to look for clues about me, I imagined how he was moving, scared, preparing his backpack, silencing his phone, poor fool, thinking he could run from me.
He looked out his window, right toward my house, I knew he was afraid of seeing me there, standing and smiling, my house was dark, total silence, too quiet, my phrase repeated in his mind: I'll come by for you tomorrow, okay?, that phrase wasn't a question, it was my command, and if I was expecting a "wonderful day," he couldn't escape.
At 6:00 in the morning, I was already outside, he thought I would leave at my normal time, how boring, waiting for him at his door was too easy, I imagined his tension as he walked down the stairs, the silence of his parents.
I imagined him leaning in and looking through the peephole, I wasn't there, he probably felt a stupid relief, thinking he had won the first round, he opened the door without a sound and left quickly.
(T/N) took the loneliest street, the one nobody from school uses, his destination: the subway station, I waited until he was on the second street, very close to me, then, I made a sound, a whistle, it wasn't loud, but soft and happy,
I felt great, I knew he would hear the whistle coming from the corner he was about to turn, I watched him stop, hiding behind a recycling bin, I stopped whistling, turned my head right toward him, and smiled.
It wasn't a kind smile, I was annoyed with him for trying to escape, but it was my victory.
— Me: I knew you wouldn't wait for me, (T/N), but relax.
I took a step toward the alley, blocking his route to the subway, I saw the desperation on his face, he was trapped, he had no escape.
— (T/N): How... how did you know I would come this way?
My smile widened, my eyes, however, shone with triumph.
— Me: Did you really think I'd let you go?, please, (T/N), I know you like being alone and quiet, but it's very mean to leave without me.
He moved, trying to go toward the main street, but I moved faster, I blocked him with my body, my attitude went from being playful to very firm.
— Me: No, you promised we'd go together, you can't break that promise, that is very cruel, (T/N).
The use of the word "cruel" angered him, he's easy to manipulate.
— (T/N): I didn't promise you anything!, you simply forced me to say yes, and let me tell you something, Chloe!
His attitude annoyed me a little, I'll have to punish him later.
— Me: Yes, (T/N)?, what were you going to tell me?
(T/N) took a deep breath, his heart was racing, he was about to reveal his truth.
— (T/N): Listen!, I might sound crazy, but yesterday I had an accident in the subway, some jerk pushed me onto the tracks and, instead of dying, I came back to life, I know it's hard to believe, but it's true, I think the accident changed something in you, and that's why you're so different.
He fell silent, waiting for me to show fear, he expected me to believe him, I stared at him intently, my eyes, framed by my hair, watched everything he said, then, my smile returned, bigger, sweeter, and more unsettling.
— Me: Wow, (T/N)!, are you saying you had a very real dream?, studies must be stressing you out a lot.
I tilted my head, feigning pure concern.
— Me: Did you dream about the subway?, that's a normal nightmare, look, that's why it's good that we go to school together, that way I can make sure you're okay and not having those nightmares.
My denial was very calm, it was as if his truth vanished into thin air.
— (T/N): It's not a dream!, everything I'm saying is true!
— Me: Are you asking me to believe you?, —I pretended to think—, I think you acted a little weird, but don't worry, I can help you see how wonderful your life is, okay?
I walked toward him, I wasn't subtle, I reached out and grabbed his wrist, I pulled him gently, but with a strength that didn't let him resist.
— Me: Enough with dreams and the subway, come on, (T/N), you promised to come with me, didn't you?, and (T/N), remember...
I lowered my voice to a whisper that scared him badly.
— Me: ...Don't ever try to leave me alone again, it's very cruel when someone you care about treats you like that.
As I dragged him, he confirmed something important to me, he remembered the accident, his plan to tell me the truth had been a huge mistake, now, he was at my mercy, walking toward the school, where he wouldn't be able to escape from me, the pace of this story isn't decided by you, it's decided by me.
