The thing with mistakes, was that one had to quickly acknowledge that they'd made a mistake, in order to prevent them from falling further down a path that would not bring anything good into their lives. As such Deacon Roth was gladly admitting to himself that he had made a mistake, and that mistake was in going to see Dr Smith.
Clearly the man had either cheated his way through medical school, or he had never even gone in the first place. He had just simply bought the degree, and was now practicing because of that. That was the only reasonable explanation that Deacon could think of in terms of the man's diagnosis.
