Chapter 143 - Chapter 25 – Undisputed Before the Shift, Part3

Part 3: The Rankings Begin

The hall had fully settled.

Rows of students sat quietly now, the earlier noise fading into a low, contained silence. No one stood. No one moved unnecessarily.

All eyes faced forward.

The stage lights brightened slightly.

From the side, a group of instructors walked in—measured, composed, their presence enough to command attention without a word.

They took their positions.

At the center, one stepped forward toward the microphone.

A soft echo rang through the hall.

"Students…"

The voice carried clearly across the room.

"Today marks the conclusion of this term's tournament."

Silence deepened.

Even the smallest whispers disappeared.

"The matches you have witnessed… were not just tests of strength."

A pause.

"But of discipline, control… and growth."

Kaito leaned back slightly in his seat, arms folded. "…Here it comes."

Ayame didn't respond. Her eyes remained forward, focused.

Haruto sat still.

Listening.

"Many of you exceeded expectations," the instructor continued.

"Some discovered their limits."

"Others… went beyond them."

A subtle shift moved through the crowd.

Not noise—

But recognition.

People thinking.

Remembering their own matches.

Akari watched quietly from the side, her gaze occasionally shifting toward the three beside her.

Kaito looked interested now.

Ayame remained composed.

Haruto—

Unmoving.

Another instructor stepped forward slightly.

"The purpose of this tournament was never to determine who is strongest alone."

"But to prepare you… for what lies ahead."

A faint tension built in the room.

"Because strength without control… is meaningless."

"Talent without discipline… is fragile."

Kaito exhaled softly. "…They always say this."

Ayame spoke quietly, barely above a whisper. "Listen."

He didn't reply this time.

On stage, the instructors exchanged brief glances.

Then the main speaker continued.

"Today, we will recognize those who stood out."

A small ripple of anticipation spread through the hall.

Not loud—

But present.

"You will be called… not just for victory…"

A pause.

"But for what you have shown."

Haruto's eyes lifted slightly.

Focused.

"And remember this," the instructor added, voice firm now.

"This is not the end of your journey."

"It is only the beginning."

The words lingered.

Settling into the room.

For a moment—

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Kaito leaned forward slightly, a faint grin returning. "…Now it gets interesting."

Ayame straightened just a little.

Akari remained calm.

Haruto sat still—

Eyes forward.

Ready.

The real moment… hadn't come yet.

The arena had settled into complete silence.

No whispers.

No movement.

Only the sound of the instructor's voice as he stood at the center of the stage, scroll in hand.

"Before we begin…"

A pause.

"These rankings are not based on who passed… or who advanced further."

A few students shifted slightly.

"They are based on personal dominance… behavior… decision-making… support… and overall presence."

His eyes moved across the hall.

"In short…"

"What you showed as individuals."

He opened the scroll.

"The rankings will now be announced."

"From last… to first."

"Rank 46… Hiroki Hasegawa."

Hiroki's jaw tightened.

He leaned toward Leo, voice low.

"…That girl. Naoko. She should be around our rank. No way she's higher."

Leo didn't even look at him.

"…I just hope I'm above you."

Hiroki frowned.

"…What?"

Leo exhaled.

"Because of your actions. Why did you even drag me into that?"

No reply came.

"Rank 45… Leo Junpei."

"Rank 44… Kiyoshi Kaoru."

"Rank 43… Marito Nishitani."

"Rank 42… Shogo Tokugawa."

"Rank 41… Kagawa Ootani."

"Rank 40… Itsuki Okamoto."

"Rank 39… Emi Fumio."

Hiroki's expression shifted.

"…She's still not called?"

A hint of unease.

A few rows ahead—

Misaki sat between Izumi and Amaya, fingers slightly clenched.

"…You alright?" Izumi asked.

"…Yeah," she said quietly. "I just want top 30."

Amaya glanced at her.

"You'll do better than that."

A pause.

"…Top 15."

Misaki let out a small breath.

"…I hope so."

"Rank 38… Hayame Muramatsu."

"Rank 37… Higashi Fujiwara."

"Rank 36… Yori Senzaki."

"Rank 35… Kira Arakawa."

Souta nudged Yuna lightly.

"See? We're making top 20. Told you."

Yuna frowned slightly.

"…They started from 46. Not 48."

A small pause.

"…What if I'm last?"

Souta waved it off.

"Relax."

"Rank 34… Marika Kurogane."

"Rank 33… Nao Hoshi."

"Rank 32… Kanae Ziro."

"Rank 31… Sanae Fujikawa."

"Rank 30… Haruki Aoba."

"Rank 29… Zenzo Amana."

"Rank 28… Nagai Ayaka."

"Rank 27… Saito Kaneshiro."

"Rank 26… Mei Shibata."

"Rank 25… Akio Akebono."

Izumi glanced at Amaya.

"…You okay?"

"…Yeah."

"Don't worry. You'll rank high. The clan will notice."

Amaya's gaze lowered slightly.

"…Izumi."

A pause.

"…You lost on purpose."

Izumi stilled.

"…No."

"You did."

Silence.

"You lost to Kento so you wouldn't face me later," Amaya said quietly. "You avoided that outcome."

Izumi exhaled.

"…You figured it out."

Amaya didn't respond.

Instead, she looked at Misaki.

"…What's wrong?"

Misaki's voice lowered.

"My name hasn't been called yet…"

"…What if I'm 47… or 48…"

Amaya's tone softened.

"…You won't be."

"Rank 24… Bunjiro Uesugi."

"Rank 23… Ozawa Takahara."

"Rank 22… Mika Fumiko."

"Rank 21… Daichi Mori."

"Rank 20… Souta Nishikawa."

"Rank 19… Yuna Sekiguchi."

Souta grinned instantly.

"Told you."

Yuna exhaled in relief.

"…Yeah."

"Rank 18… Tetsu Yonamine."

"Rank 17… Naoko Minami."

A pause.

"For her resilience under pressure… and continuing despite being targeted…"

"…she will receive special recognition."

Naoko walked to the stage.

The award was placed in her hands.

No loud applause.

Only respect.

She stepped down.

"Rank 16… Pirika Uri."

"Rank 15… Shin Sugiyama."

"Rank 14… Riku Tanaka."

"Rank 13… Katsuo Shimura."

"Rank 12… Chiharu Phoenix."

"Rank 11… Kento Ishida."

A pause.

Then—

"From this point forward… step onto the stage when called."

"Rank 10… Nobu Mizuno."

Nobu stood, walked to the stage, received his award with slightly trembling hands, then stepped down.

"Rank 9… Misaki Hoshino."

Misaki froze.

"…I made it…"

She stood quickly, walked up, received her award, and stepped down—relief clear in her eyes.

"Rank 8… Hina Kobayashi."

"Rank 7… Raizo Okabe."

"Rank 6… Yamashita Taro."

Each walked up.

Received.

Left.

One by one.

The stage never stayed crowded.

Only one at a time.

"Rank 5… Izumi Homura."

Izumi walked calmly.

Took the award.

Left without a word.

"Rank 4… Saki Aizawa."

Saki stepped forward.

Collected hers.

Returned.

Haruto's fingers tightened.

Only three left…

His thoughts grew heavier.

I'm last.

That's how it ends.

"Rank 3…"

A pause.

"…Arashi Homura… and Kaito Inazuma."

Kaito blinked.

"…What?"

He stood slowly, walked to the stage, received his award beside Arashi, then stepped down.

Still processing.

Haruto's mind stilled.

If Arashi is third…

Then I'm…

A hollow silence filled him.

"Rank 2…"

"…Amaya Homura… and Haruto Inazuma."

The world paused.

Haruto didn't move.

Not at first.

Then slowly—

He stood.

Walked forward.

Took the award.

No reaction.

No expression.

Then stepped down.
