Chapter 144 - Chapter 25 – Undisputed Before the Shift, Part4

Part 4: The One at the Top

Only one name remained.

The instructor's voice softened.

Not weaker.

But heavier.

"Rank 1…"

A long pause.

"…Ayame Inazuma."

Silence.

Absolute.

Ayame stood.

Calm.

Unshaken.

She walked forward—

Alone.

No one else stepped onto the stage.

No one stood beside her.

The award was placed in her hands.

A different one.

More refined.

More significant.

The light seemed to rest on her.

Not the stage.

Not the crowd.

Her.

No whispers now.

No reactions.

Only stillness.

Because at that moment—

There was no doubt.

No debate.

No equal.

She stood there—

Alone.

Undisputed.

And somewhere in that quiet—

Unseen by most—

It felt like something had reached its peak.

Right before—

Everything would begin to fall.

Ayame stood alone on the stage.

The lights rested on her, soft but undeniable, as the entire arena remained quiet—not out of tension this time, but out of something deeper.

Recognition.

She held the award in her hands, fingers wrapping around it gently, almost like she didn't want to grip it too tightly.

For a moment, she didn't look at the crowd.

She just stood there.

Still.

Calm.

Complete.

Then slowly, she lifted her gaze.

Not searching.

Not overwhelmed.

Just… accepting.

A faint breath left her lips.

"…Thank you."

Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried.

Clear.

Steady.

Enough.

A small wave of applause followed—not explosive, not wild—but respectful. Earned.

From the side of the stage, Haruto watched quietly.

Kaito leaned forward slightly in his seat, a small grin tugging at his lips.

"…She actually did it," he muttered.

Haruto didn't respond.

But his eyes didn't leave her.

Ayame gave a small nod, then turned and stepped down from the stage.

As she walked back, the light shifted with her—then faded as she returned to her place beside them.

Kaito immediately leaned in.

"Rank one, huh?" he whispered. "Don't get too proud."

Ayame gave him a small look.

"…You're one to talk."

He grinned.

Haruto said nothing.

But for a brief second—

his gaze softened.

Just a little.

On stage, the announcer stepped forward again, adjusting the scroll in his hand.

The hall quieted once more.

"…Before we conclude…"

A pause.

"We will now recognize the four finalists… for their performance, endurance, and impact throughout the tournament."

A subtle shift passed through the crowd.

Eyes moved again.

Attention sharpened.

"…Arashi Homura."

Arashi stood without hesitation and walked forward, posture straight, expression unchanged.

"…Amaya Homura."

Amaya followed, calm as ever, her gaze steady as she stepped onto the stage.

"…Haruto Inazuma."

Kaito nudged him lightly.

"Go."

Haruto exhaled once and stood, walking forward without a word.

"…Ayame Inazuma."

This time, Ayame rose again—but slower.

Not tired.

Just… quieter.

She stepped forward, joining the others.

The four of them stood side by side.

The top of the tournament.

Different presences.

Different energies.

Yet all connected by the same stage.

Awards were brought forward—distinct from the others.

Not just for rank.

But for reaching the final.

The announcer continued:

"These four… represent the highest level displayed in this tournament."

A pause.

"…Strength, adaptability… and resolve."

Each of them was handed their award.

Arashi accepted his with a firm grip.

Amaya took hers with composed calm.

Haruto received his silently.

Ayame held hers gently.

For a brief moment—

they stood there together.

No rivalry.

No movement.

Just presence.

Then—

a quiet round of applause filled the arena again.

Not loud.

But heavier.

Meaningful.

From below, students watched with mixed expressions.

Some inspired.

Some tense.

Some unwilling to accept it.

From his seat, Kaito crossed his arms, watching them.

"…Next time," he muttered under his breath, "I'm not staying behind."

On the stage, Haruto's gaze shifted slightly.

For a brief second—

it met Ayame's.

No words.

None needed.

Then the moment passed.

The announcer lowered the scroll.

"…This concludes the ranking ceremony."

The lights brightened slightly.

The atmosphere shifted.

Movement began again.

But something had changed.

Not just in positions.

Not just in rank.

Something deeper.

Because tonight—

wasn't just about who stood at the top.

It was about what came next.

And none of them—

knew how much things were about to change.
