"You're very handsome," Hailey said simply. "It's distracting."
Eric looked at her sideways. He wasn't sure whether she was teasing him or being serious. But the gentle smile on her face suggested she meant every word.
"So I'm distractingly handsome," he said slowly.
"Very much so," Hailey confirmed.
"But also look like a dog," Eric added.
"A cute dog," Hailey emphasized.
"I'm not sure if I should be flattered or insulted," Eric admitted.
"Be flattered," Hailey suggested. "Dogs are loyal, loving, and adorable."
"Are you saying I'm loyal, loving, and adorable?" Eric asked.
"Maybe," Hailey said with a mischievous smile.
"Maybe?" Eric repeated.
"Definitely the adorable part," Hailey clarified.
They left the park laughing, walking hand in hand down the cobblestone streets as the last light of day faded into evening.
The town looked different in the gathering darkness.
Warm light spilled from restaurant windows.
