Chapter 21 - Grindylow

The morning fog lingered over the castle grounds, curling around the towers like soft fingers. Luna and I met early by the edge of the Black Lake, our satchels stuffed with lanterns, notebooks, and a few small jars of treats we hoped would entice the creatures.

"I read that Grindylows hide among reeds," Luna whispered, her eyes scanning the dark, rippling surface. "They don't like bright lights or loud noises. Patience is the first key to seeing them."

I nodded, crouching low beside her, careful not to disturb the water's edge. My cat padded silently at my side, tail flicking with curiosity.

"Do you think they'll like your cat?" Luna murmured, eyes twinkling. "Or maybe they'll mistake it for a tiny river monster and flee?"

I snorted softly. "Knowing my luck… they'll probably challenge it to a duel."

She giggled, soft and airy, and unrolled a small, waterproof chart she'd made, with sketches of Grindylows and notes she'd taken from old magical creature guides.

"The tricky part," she continued, "is that they're territorial. If we go in too deep, they'll hiss and splash. We have to approach from the edges."

We crept along the bank, careful to step lightly on the moss and wet stones. Shadows shifted under the water, and every ripple made us both pause and hold our breath. Occasionally, Luna would murmur an observation, and I'd write it down, trying not to miss a single detail.

"Look!" she whispered suddenly, pointing toward a patch of reeds swaying unnaturally. "Something's moving there."

A small, greenish creature flashed its spindly arms above the waterline — a Grindylow! Its black eyes glimmered with suspicion as it regarded us.

"Slowly," Luna breathed, reaching into her satchel for a tiny vial of fish we'd saved from Hagrid's supply. She knelt, holding it low so the creature could see.

The Grindylow twitched, eyes narrowing, but curiosity won over caution. It inched closer, then paused again, watching the strange pair of humans crouched by the lake.

I whispered, "I think it's working. You've got that… Luna charm."

She smiled faintly, tilting her head. "Creatures trust those who try to understand them. Not those who try to capture them."

Minutes passed like hours. The Grindylow finally reached forward, snatching a tiny piece of fish from Luna's hand. Its movements were cautious, almost polite. We both laughed softly — careful not to startle it — our laughter mingling with the gentle lapping of water.

"This is incredible," I murmured. "I never thought we'd actually get this close."

Luna leaned back slightly, brushing her hair from her face. "It's all about respect. And a little patience. Did you notice how it watches for our reactions first? They're careful students, like us."

We spent the next hour sketching, taking notes, and observing behavior. The Grindylow occasionally swiped playfully at the water, flicking tiny splashes toward us, but never fully leaving its safety.

As we packed up to leave, careful to step quietly back toward the castle, Luna whispered, "Tomorrow, we can try to find the other pair Hagrid mentioned — the ones that live near the sunken logs. I think they might be even more curious."

I glanced down at my cat, now contentedly chasing a leaf along the path. "I think you're right. They might even like him."

Luna laughed softly, linking her arm with mine. "Or at least tolerate him. And we'll be ready. We've learned something important tonight — that discovery isn't about rushing. It's about watching, learning, and being patient."

The moonlight shone faintly over the castle towers as we slipped back into Ravenclaw Tower, tired but exhilarated, knowing that this small, quiet victory was only the beginning of our many adventures together.

The night was colder this time, and the wind rustled through the trees surrounding the Black Lake. Luna and I crept carefully along the water's edge, lanterns casting a golden glow over the reeds. My cat padded confidently beside me, tail twitching in anticipation, clearly enjoying the secrecy of our nocturnal adventure.

"The logs should be just ahead," Luna whispered, pointing toward a cluster of sunken wood that peeked above the water. "Hagrid said the boldest Grindylows like to play around them. But be careful — they don't like anyone wandering too close."

I crouched low beside her, gripping my satchel tightly. "Bold? That sounds… dangerous."

Luna's eyes sparkled. "Dangerous is just another word for adventure."

We crept closer. Shadows flitted across the water, small ripples betraying movement beneath the surface. Then, suddenly, two greenish shapes shot up like rockets, splashing water in every direction.

"There they are!" Luna breathed.

The Grindylows eyed us with suspicion. One flicked its tiny arms threateningly, while the other swirled around a partially submerged log, clearly deciding whether to investigate or flee. My cat, curious as ever, pawed at a floating reed — and chaos erupted.

The boldest Grindylow shot forward, arms flailing, trying to swipe at the intruder. My cat hissed, leapt, and swatted back, sending a splash of water onto both of us. Luna and I ducked instinctively, laughing despite the sudden cold shower.

"Careful!" I whispered, shivering and wiping water from my cheek. "It's armed with… tiny claws!"

"They're just trying to communicate," Luna replied, still crouched and sketching furiously. "They want to play, but they're cautious. That's all."

I peeked over her shoulder. The sketches she made were amazing — every ripple in the water, every flick of the Grindylow's tiny limbs, captured in her delicate, precise lines. "You really notice everything," I whispered.

"They're fascinating," Luna murmured, eyes never leaving the creatures. "And so patient, if you approach them right. Now…" She leaned toward the largest log. "Let's see if we can tempt them closer."

She carefully tossed a small piece of fish toward the water. The larger Grindylow darted toward it, hesitating just at the edge of the log. The smaller one mirrored the movement, flicking its little arms like it was rehearsing a dance. My cat, enthralled, followed their every move, tail flicking dangerously close to the water.

"Not too close," Luna warned softly. "Or it might think your cat is a monster."

Of course, my cat didn't listen. One daring paw reached for the ripples, and the smaller Grindylow squeaked, shooting upward and splashing water everywhere. I yelped, trying to pull my cat back, but the creature swiped again, and a mini water fight broke out. Luna dissolved into quiet laughter, sketching quickly as I scrambled to separate my cat from the mischievous Grindylow.

Finally, after careful maneuvering, we managed to calm both the creatures and my cat. They watched us cautiously from a safe distance, but no hostility remained — only curiosity and cautious playfulness.

"I think we've earned their trust," Luna whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her face, glowing in the lantern light. "Not complete, but enough for observation. And maybe a little mischief too."

I exhaled, smiling despite the wet sleeves and muddy knees. "Next time… we bring a towel. And maybe a net for my cat."

She laughed softly, linking her arm with mine. "Or we let him learn the rules of the lake. It's part of the adventure."

We packed up our lanterns carefully, making sure not to disturb the logs or the Grindylows. The night felt alive with quiet magic, rippling water, and the gentle sounds of wings and fins brushing beneath the surface.

As we crept back to Ravenclaw Tower, my cat trotting proudly ahead, Luna whispered, "Tomorrow, we might try a different approach. Observe them from the reeds, without being seen at all. That way, we can see more — and maybe they'll approach us themselves."

I smiled, linking my arm with hers. "I think I like the idea of letting them come to us. Much safer than my cat challenging them every time."

Luna grinned, eyes sparkling in the moonlight. "And more fun, too."

The castle loomed ahead, quiet and welcoming. Exhausted but thrilled, we slipped back into the tower, already whispering plans for the next night — another adventure by the Black Lake, another step closer to understanding the secret, playful world of the Grindylows.
