Chapter 22 - Minor cat accident with Grindylows

The night air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of the Black Lake and the whisper of reeds. Luna and I crouched low among the tall, swaying plants, lanterns dimmed so as not to alarm the Grindylows. My cat perched on a nearby rock, ears twitching, tail flicking with excitement — clearly thrilled to be back in the midst of secret nocturnal adventures.

"Tonight, we watch," Luna whispered. "No splashing, no sudden moves. Just observe, and let them come to us."

I nodded, adjusting my cloak to stay as quiet as possible. "Right. Like ninja students."

She giggled softly. "Exactly. The perfect Ravenclaw ninjas."

We waited. Shadows shifted beneath the water, tiny limbs breaking the surface occasionally. The larger Grindylow darted toward a floating log, then paused, as if considering our presence. The smaller one circled cautiously, eyes glinting in the lantern light.

"They're bolder than last time," Luna murmured, sketching quickly. "But still wary. Notice how the larger one keeps an eye on the smaller, guiding it… like a parent."

I leaned closer, whispering, "Do you think they recognize us?"

She nodded, eyes twinkling. "I think they remember our hands, the food, even your cat… though he might be considered a minor annoyance."

Of course, just as she said that, my cat's tail flicked too close to the water, and the smaller Grindylow shot upward, splashing a spray of icy water across my knees. I yelped, earning a soft laugh from Luna.

"You've got to control your pet," she teased, still focused on her sketches. "Or they'll think we're clumsy humans."

I mumbled an apology, crouching lower, but couldn't help glancing at her. She looked radiant in the moonlight, hair slightly tangled, eyes full of concentration, entirely absorbed in her sketches. My chest warmed at the sight.

Hours seemed to pass in silence, broken only by the occasional splash of the Grindylows or the soft rustle of reeds. We noted their behaviors, the way they played with sticks, their delicate social interactions, and even their brief curiosity toward my cat.

Finally, satisfied, Luna whispered, "We should leave before someone notices we're gone. Snape would have our heads if he caught us near the lake this late."

I nodded, gathering our lanterns and checking our notes. "Agreed. Let's sneak back quietly."

The trek back to Hogwarts was tense but thrilling. We hugged the shadows, careful not to be seen by any late-night staff or wandering students. Occasionally, my cat darted ahead or swatted at a fallen leaf, but we managed to retrieve him without incident.

As we approached the castle, the first hints of dawn tinged the sky. We paused on the stone steps outside the Ravenclaw Tower, breathing in the fresh morning air, hearts racing with the success of our adventure.

"Another victory," Luna whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Observation, patience, and… minor chaos with a cat."

I laughed softly. "The minor chaos is all my fault. Maybe we should leave him at home next time."

She shook her head, smiling. "No. He's part of the fun. Besides, it teaches him discipline… eventually."

We crept inside, our footsteps silent on the cold stone floors, and slipped back into our dormitory, notebooks full, sketches vivid, and hearts full of shared secrets. For the rest of the day, the Black Lake adventure glimmered quietly in our minds, a memory to cherish, and a promise of more nights to come.

The morning sunlight streamed through the Ravenclaw tower windows, golden and warm. Luna and I sat cross-legged on our beds, notebooks open, sketches spilling across the covers.

"My hands are cramped," I murmured, flipping through pages full of tiny, precise Grindylow observations. "But look at this — the way the larger one nudged the smaller. It's almost… parental."

Luna leaned closer, brushing her messy hair behind her ear. "And notice the ripple patterns when it splashed. That shows intent — communication, play, warning… all at once." She pointed at her sketch with a pencil tipped in graphite. "This one is my favorite — see how it curls around the sunken log? Perfect symmetry."

I grinned. "I think we might actually get extra points for this if we ever… casually mention it in Care of Magical Creatures."

Luna giggled softly. "Let's try, then."

We made our way to Hagrid's classroom, careful to avoid the hallways where Snape might be lurking — though the thought of him discovering our minor nocturnal adventures made me shiver.

Hagrid's eyes twinkled when he saw us entering. "Ah! You two! Back from the lake, eh? Did ye observe somethin'?"

Luna straightened, notebook in hand. "Yes! We studied the Grindylows by the sunken logs. They're clever, coordinated, and… playful."

Hagrid's jaw nearly dropped. "Ye actually went closer than I'd have dared!" He peered at our sketches. "Well, I'll be! These are detailed. You've noted behaviors I've barely seen meself."

I felt a flush of pride as he examined our observations, nodding enthusiastically. Luna gave me a subtle squeeze of the hand under the table, a quiet "well done" I didn't need words to understand.

Later, during a Potions class, I could hardly focus — my mind kept drifting back to the lake, the water, and the way Luna's hair had caught the moonlight. Snape's sharp voice cut through my thoughts:

"Miss Dionida, if you intend to daydream instead of attending, perhaps you should sleep outside where it's quieter."

I flushed crimson, ducking my head. Luna smirked slightly beside me, and I elbowed her gently. She whispered, "Patience. He can't take points away for thoughts, only for failing to write them down."

At the end of the morning, we returned to the Ravenclaw common room, notebooks brimming with sketches and notes. I poured over my cat's antics from last night, detailing each curious swipe and reaction — a record of interactions that would help us anticipate the creatures' behaviors in future adventures.

Luna sat beside me, notebook open. "Shall we add the Mandrake observations from last week? And the thestrals? Oh, and Buckbeak — don't forget him. He was magnificent."

I chuckled. "At this rate, we'll have the most comprehensive magical creatures journal in the school."

She smiled, brushing her pencil along the page. "And we'll have our own secret adventures to fill it with. Who knows what we'll find next?"

I leaned closer. "Whatever it is, I'm glad I'm discovering it with you."

Her eyes caught mine, sparkling with quiet warmth. "And I with you. We make a good team, Dionida."

As we wrote, sketched, and laughed quietly at small mishaps from our nocturnal exploration — my cat slipping on a wet stone, Luna nearly dropping her lantern into the lake — I realized just how much Hogwarts had changed for me. The world wasn't just magical; it was full of possibility, wonder… and Luna.

And I knew, no matter how many creatures we encountered, how many nights we snuck through the reeds, or how many adventures awaited, I wanted to face them all with her by my side.
