Gideon had barely stepped into his room when the doorbell chimed. He pulled the door open and saw Danica standing there.
"Where is Noel?" he asked, eyes shifting past her, scanning the hallway. But there was none. "Is he not going with us?"
"He is." She stepped in. "I told him to get ready. I came to talk to you." She closed the door behind her.
Gideon nodded. "I wanted to talk to you too — about what happened at the office."
The smile on her face faltered. "Summer shouldn't have given the candies to Noel. Whenever I think about it, I get chills. What if something had happened to him?"
Gideon's jaw clenched. He knew her fear. Danica had already lost a baby. It was natural that she grew overly protective of Noel. But accusing Summer of trying to hurt the boy was too far.
"I know you are worried, but you shouldn't have accused her of hurting Noel," he said. "She wouldn't know."
Danica opened her mouth to argue, but the words didn't quite form.
