Chapter 400 - Asia Cup 2016 - 1

The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur was a cauldron of noise. The air was thick with humidity and the unmistakable, frantic anticipation of an India-Bangladesh clash. It was February 24, 2016. The opening match of the 2016 Asia Cup.

For the first time in the tournament's history, the Asia Cup was being played in the T20 format, serving as the ultimate dress rehearsal for the impending ICC World T20 scheduled to take place in India a month later.

Inside the Indian dressing room, the atmosphere was focused and highly professional.

"The pitch here in Mirpur is going to be slow and low, boys," Dhoni addressed the squad, tossing a white Kookaburra ball from hand to hand. "It is not going to be a 200-run wicket. The ball will grip for the spinners, and the pacers who use their variations will be very difficult to get away. We need to assess the par score early. Don't go out there swinging blindly."

Dhoni turned to the tactical whiteboard, tapping the playing XI written in black marker.

"We are playing a very balanced side today," Dhoni confirmed. "Rohit and Shikhar at the top. Virat at three, Sid at four. Raina and Yuvraj in the middle order. Myself, Jadeja, and Ashwin to follow. Nehra ji takes the new ball with Bumrah. We have plenty of bowling options and deep batting. Let's start the tournament with a win."

Siddanth looked across the room at Jasprit Bumrah. The young fast bowler from Gujarat, with his incredibly unorthodox, jerky action, had recently broken into the national side. He was raw, quiet, and possessed a lethal yorker.

"Just hit the base of the stumps, Jasprit," Siddanth told the youngster, offering a reassuring nod. "Don't overthink the crowd. If they try to scoop you, aim for their toes."

Bumrah nodded seriously, adjusting his blue cap. "Yes, Sid bhai."

[COMMENTARY BOX - PRE-MATCH SHOW]

Harsha Bhogle:"A very warm welcome to Mirpur! The 2016 Asia Cup kicks off with a massive encounter. The host nation, Bangladesh, taking on the favorites, India. The stadium is an absolute sea of green. Mashrafe Mortaza and MS Dhoni are out in the middle for the toss."

Sunil Gavaskar:"It's a crucial tournament, Harsha. The World T20 is just around the corner. Teams need to finalize their combinations. India looks incredibly strong on paper, bringing back the veteran Yuvraj Singh into the middle order, and introducing young Jasprit Bumrah to partner Ashish Nehra."

The coin was tossed into the humid Dhaka sky. MS Dhoni called Heads.

It landed Tails.

Harsha Bhogle:"Mashrafe Mortaza wins the toss. What are you going to do, Mashrafe?"

"We are going to bowl first, Harsha," the Bangladeshi captain stated, the crowd erupting behind him. "The pitch looks a bit green, and there might be some moisture early on. We want our fast bowlers to exploit it. Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed are bowling very well."

Harsha Bhogle:"MS, would you have bowled first as well?"

"Yes, we probably would have," Dhoni admitted with his trademark calm smile. "The dew factor might come into play later in the evening, making it difficult for the spinners to grip the ball. But we have to put a score on the board now. The pitch here can be tricky, so our openers need to be watchful."

[FIRST INNINGS - INDIA BATTING]

Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma walked out to the middle. The noise from the Bangladeshi supporters was deafening, fully backing their fiery fast-bowling duo of Mashrafe Mortaza and Taskin Ahmed.

The Mirpur pitch lived up to MS Dhoni's assessment immediately. It wasn't a flat batting paradise. The ball was holding up in the surface, making it incredibly difficult for the Indian openers to play their natural, free-flowing shots through the line.

Rohit Sharma, relying on his immaculate timing, managed to pierce the infield a few times, but Shikhar Dhawan looked visibly uncomfortable against the moving ball.

In the 4th over, Al-Amin Hossain was brought into the attack.

3.4 Al-Amin bowled a heavy, skidding delivery on a good length. Dhawan, frustrated by his sluggish strike rate, tried to force a wild heave over mid-wicket. The ball didn't bounce as high as he expected. It snuck under the bat and crashed into the leg stump.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ian Bishop:"BOWLED HIM! The pressure tells on Shikhar Dhawan! Al-Amin Hossain strikes! Dhawan was looking to break the shackles but completely missed the line. India is 18 for 1."

Virat Kohli strode out to the middle, greeted by a mixture of cheers and boos. He took his guard, but the pitch continued to play tricks. Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman bowled with immense discipline, denying Kohli any room to free his arms.

The run rate crawled. At the end of the powerplay, India was a very modest 31 for 1.

In the 8th over, Mashrafe Mortaza decided to attack with spin, bringing Mahmudullah into the attack.

7.5 Mahmudullah tossed the ball up wide outside the off-stump. Kohli, attempting to drive on the up to accelerate the innings, was beaten by the slow pace of the pitch. The ball caught the bottom edge and flew straight into the hands of the short mid-off fielder.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Sourav Ganguly:"Caught! Virat Kohli is gone for just 8 runs! Mahmudullah strikes! Kohli couldn't get the elevation, and the ball stuck in the pitch. A massive wicket for Bangladesh! India is struggling here at 42 for 2."

The Mirpur stadium exploded. The Bangladeshi fielders swarmed Mahmudullah.

But as the celebrations died down, the camera panned to the Indian dressing room. Siddanth Deva was walking down the steps, his bat tucked under his arm.

He was completely clean-shaven, his hair had grown out significantly over the last eight months, falling in thick, messy waves down to his neck. It was a look that had become entirely synonymous with his dominant run-scoring phase.

[COMMENTARY BOX - DEVA ENTERS]

Harsha Bhogle:"And here comes Siddanth Deva, adjusting his helmet over those long locks. It's a look international bowlers have grown to fear immensely over the last eight months. But he is walking into a very tricky situation today. The pitch is slow, and Bangladesh is bowling beautifully."

Ian Bishop:"He cannot afford to just swing from ball one, Harsha. He has to assess this surface. If India loses another wicket here, they will struggle to post 130."

Siddanth reached the middle of the pitch. He bumped gloves with Rohit Sharma.

"The ball is stopping on the surface, Sid," Rohit warned quietly, leaning heavily on his bat. "You can't hit through the line today. The cutters are gripping hard."

"I see it, Ro," Siddanth nodded, engaging his Crab's Eye trait. "Let them bowl. We manipulate the field. Don't take risks against Mustafizur until the death overs."

Siddanth took his guard against Mahmudullah.

7.6 Mahmudullah bowled a flatter delivery on middle stump. Siddanth didn't try to drive. He rocked back, used the depth of his crease, and punched it softly to long-on for a single to get off the mark, ensuring he retained the strike for the next over.

For the next few overs, Siddanth and Rohit built a steady partnership. They ran consistently, pushing the ball into the gaps of the Mirpur outfield, turning ones into twos. The run rate slowly began to creep up.

In the 14th over, with India at 115 for 2, Siddanth decided the platform was stable enough to accelerate. Mashrafe Mortaza brought Shakib Al Hasan back into the attack.

13.2 Shakib fired a quick delivery at the pads. Siddanth cleared his front leg and whipped his wrists, sending the ball flat over deep mid-wicket for a SIX.

13.5 Shakib went wide outside off. Siddanth opened the face of the bat at the last moment, slicing the ball over backward point for a FOUR.

The gear shift was instantaneous. Rohit Sharma also began to find his timing, sweeping the spinners and lofting the medium-pacers down the ground. By the 18th over, India had surged to 165 for 2.

Mustafizur Rahman was handed the ball for the 19th over. The young left-arm pacer, known for his effective off-cutters, was Bangladesh's premier death bowler.

18.1 Mustafizur delivered his off-cutter. The ball gripped the pitch and turned away from the right-hander. Siddanth waited deep in his crease and executed a flat-batted pull shot for a FOUR.

18.2 Mustafizur bowled a wide yorker. Siddanth stretched out and jammed his bat down, squeezing the ball past short third man for another FOUR.

18.3 Mustafizur tried a bouncer. Siddanth swiveled on his back foot and hooked it into the stands. SIX.

Siddanth scored 14 runs off the first three balls of the over. He pushed a single to long-off on the fourth ball, handing the strike to Rohit Sharma.

18.5 Rohit, batting on a brilliant 83 off 54 balls, tried to clear the long-on boundary but mistimed the shot. Mahmudullah took a safe catch near the boundary rope.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ian Bishop: "Caught in the deep! Rohit Sharma perishes for 83. He anchored this innings perfectly. That over from Mustafizur changed the momentum in India's favor before the wicket."

Suresh Raina walked out to the middle. He managed a single off the final delivery of the 19th over, making the score 175 for 3.

The final over was bowled by Al-Amin Hossain. Raina took a single off the first ball. Siddanth finished the innings efficiently, hitting Al-Amin for two sixes—one over extra cover and one straight down the ground—while running hard for twos.

India finished their 20 overs at an imposing 192 for 3. Siddanth Deva walked off the pitch unbeaten on 90 not out.

[COMMENTARY BOX - INNINGS BREAK]

Harsha Bhogle: "192 for 3. What a finish by the Indian vice-captain. Siddanth Deva finishes unbeaten on 90 off 49 balls. A great strike rate on a slow Mirpur pitch. Bangladesh will have to chase 193 tonight."

Sourav Ganguly: "When he came in, the pitch was tough. He bided his time, assessed the conditions, and then accelerated in the last five overs. The math reflects a massive recovery for India."

[SECOND INNINGS - BANGLADESH CHASE]

The target of 193 required a disciplined run chase. Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Mithun walked out to open.

MS Dhoni threw the new white ball to Ashish Nehra. The veteran fast bowler ran in and found his rhythm, swinging the ball into the right-handers. Jasprit Bumrah operated from the other end. His unorthodox action made him difficult to pick, and he executed his yorkers nicely, conceding just four runs in his first two overs.

The pressure applied by the Indian opening pair tied down the Bangladeshi top order. Nehra struck in the 3rd over, hitting Mithun's stumps with an inswinger. In the 6th over, Bumrah picked up his first international wicket in the tournament, trapping Soumya Sarkar LBW.

At the end of the powerplay, Bangladesh was 31 for 2. Sabbir Rahman and Imrul Kayes tried to rebuild against the Indian spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, pushing the score to 72 for 2 by the 12th over.

MS Dhoni signaled to his vice-captain. Siddanth Deva took his cap off and marked his run-up. The stadium expected raw pace, but Siddanth had spent the last eight months practicing a new weapon.

He delivered the ball at a reduced pace—135 kmph.

12.1 The ball traveled straight down the pitch on a middle-stump line. Sabbir Rahman, expecting extreme pace, leaned forward for a straight drive. As the ball approached the crease, it swung away from the right-hander in the air. Sabbir was squared up. The outswing caught the outside edge and went cleanly into the gloves of MS Dhoni.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ian Bishop: "EDGED AND TAKEN! What a delivery from Siddanth Deva. He dropped his pace, but look at the late outswing he generated. Sabbir Rahman is gone. Bangladesh loses their third wicket."

Sunil Gavaskar: "The seam presentation was clean. It started on middle stump and finished on the fourth stump. The batsman played for pace, and Siddanth deceived him with swing. Good fast bowling."

Siddanth offered a smile, bumping fists with Virat Kohli. MS Dhoni offered a nod of approval.

Shakib Al Hasan walked out to the middle. Siddanth continued his spell, mixing his 155 kmph bouncers with his newly acquired 135 kmph swinging deliveries.

14.4 Siddanth bowled a skidding 145 kmph length delivery that angled into Imrul Kayes. Kayes tried a pull shot but was cramped for room. The ball caught the top edge and looped high behind square. Yuvraj Singh, at short fine leg, ran backward and completed the catch.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Harsha Bhogle: "Caught. Siddanth Deva has his second. Imrul Kayes perishes trying to pull. Good running catch by Yuvraj Singh."

As Yuvraj jogged back, he tossed the ball to Siddanth. "Keep it on the ground next time, Sid. I'm thirty-four years old, I can't be sprinting backward like that."

Siddanth laughed, patting the veteran. "Good catch, Yuvi paaji. I'll aim for the stumps next."

With the required run rate climbing, the Bangladeshi tailenders were forced into risky hitting. Ashish Nehra returned and picked up his second and third wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin choked the runs in the middle overs. Dhoni brought Siddanth back for his final over.

17.2 Siddanth ran in and delivered a fast, 149 kmph yorker aimed at the base of the middle stump. Mahmudullah tried to dig it out but was beaten for pace. The ball hit the stumps.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ian Bishop: "BOWLED HIM! Pure pace. Siddanth Deva hits the timber. The yorker is executed nicely. That is his third wicket of the night."

Siddanth finished his quota of four overs with figures of 3 for 18. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a good final over, nailing yorkers to prevent boundaries. Bangladesh finished their 20 overs at 121 for 7.

India secured a commanding 71-run victory to open their Asia Cup campaign.

[COMMENTARY BOX - MATCH FINISH]

Harsha Bhogle: "A 71-run victory for India. They were put under pressure in the first ten overs, but Siddanth Deva and Rohit Sharma recovered well to put 192 on the board. The bowlers, led by Ashish Nehra and Siddanth Deva, executed their plans perfectly. A great start to the tournament for MS Dhoni's men."

The Indian players shook hands on the pitch. Siddanth offered a respectful handshake to Mashrafe Mortaza and the Bangladeshi players.

$$POST-MATCH PRESENTATION$$

The presentation stage was set up on the outfield of the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.

Harsha Bhogle: "Ladies and gentlemen, a strong victory for India to start the 2016 Asia Cup. For his game-changing 90 not out off 49 balls, and backing it up with 3 for 18 with the ball, the Man of the Match is Siddanth Deva!"

Siddanth jogged up to the podium, wearing his blue Indian training jacket, accepting the trophy.

Harsha Bhogle: "Siddanth, a solid performance today. When you walked in, India was in difficult position and the pitch was gripping. Can go through with us what was going in your mind?"

"We had to assess the pitch early on, Harsha," Siddanth said, his voice analytical. "Taskin and Mustafizur were bowling cutters, and the ball was stopping. Rohit and I knew we couldn't step out and hit through the line. I waited deep in the crease and used the depth. Once we had a platform, we knew we could accelerate in the last five overs."

Harsha Bhogle: "Let's talk about your bowling. In your second over, you bowled a delivery at 135 kmph that swung away to get Sabbir Rahman. Sunil Gavaskar compared it to James Anderson. Is that something new you've been working on?"

Siddanth nodded. "You have to keep evolving as a fast bowler, Harsha. Pace is great, but on slow wickets, you need variations and control. I've been working in the nets on my wrist position and seam presentation to generate conventional swing. It's nice to see it executing in a match."

Harsha Bhogle: "It executed well today. Congratulations on the Man of the Match, Siddanth."

"Thank you, Harsha."

As Siddanth walked back to his teammates, he felt satisfied. The 2016 T20 campaign had commenced. The batting held up, the pace was functional, and the new James Anderson template was claiming international wickets.
