Chapter 401 - Asia Cup 2016 - 2

The Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur was pulsating. The thick, humid air was charged with the unique, suffocating tension that only an India versus Pakistan fixture could generate.

It was the fourth match of the 2016 Asia Cup. India had already secured a commanding victory over Bangladesh, but this was the clash that mattered most to the fans.

Inside the Indian dressing room, the atmosphere was a mix of intense focus and quiet confidence. MS Dhoni was addressing the playing XI. The squad saw one significant change from the previous match: Shikhar Dhawan had picked up a slight niggle, making way for the technically compact Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the order.

"We know the conditions," Dhoni stated, his voice steady. "The pitch here in Mirpur has a lot of live grass on it today. It is going to seam around. If we win the toss, we bowl first. We use the moisture, hit the deck hard, and do not offer them any width. This is not a 160-run wicket."

[COMMENTARY BOX - THE TOSS]

Harsha Bhogle:"A massive roar goes up around Mirpur as MS Dhoni and Shahid Afridi walk out to the center. It is India against Pakistan. The biggest rivalry in the sport. MS Dhoni spins the coin. Afridi calls Tails."

Match Referee:"It is Heads."

Harsha Bhogle:"MS, you've won a very crucial toss on a very green-looking pitch. What are you going to do?"

"We are going to bowl first, Harsha," Dhoni said without hesitation. "There is a fair bit of grass on the wicket, and the ball has been moving around in the previous games under the lights. We want our fast bowlers to exploit that early on. Just one change for us, Shikhar has a slight niggle, so Jinks comes in."

Harsha Bhogle:"Shahid, losing the toss on a green top. Are you disappointed?"

"Yes, obviously we would have liked to bowl first," Afridi admitted. "But we have to put a good score on the board. We have a very strong fast-bowling attack as well, with Mohammad Amir coming back into the side. If we can get around 140, our bowlers can defend it."

[FIRST INNINGS - PAKISTAN BATTING]

The Indian team took the field. Ashish Nehra was handed the new white Kookaburra ball. Mohammad Hafeez and Sharjeel Khan walked out to open the innings for Pakistan.

The Mirpur pitch lived up to its green appearance immediately. Nehra extracted phenomenal swing and bounce, dismissing Mohammad Hafeez in the very first over, caught behind.

Jasprit Bumrah, operating from the other end, was equally unplayable. His unorthodox action and sharp inward movement trapped Sharjeel Khan in the fourth over.

Pakistan was reeling at 18 for 2.

In the 6th over, MS Dhoni signaled to Siddanth Deva.

5.1 Siddanth steamed in at a controlled 136 kmph. He pitched the ball on a good length on middle stump. Khurram Manzoor played for the straight delivery.

The ball didn't deviate much, but it skidded off the pitch incredibly fast. Manzoor was late bringing his bat down, and the ball crashed into his pads. Plumb LBW.

Pakistan was 22 for 3.

Shoaib Malik walked out to the middle. He was an experienced campaigner, tasked with rescuing the innings.

5.4 Siddanth bowled a heavy, back-of-a-length delivery aimed at the ribs. Malik fended it off awkwardly.

5.5 Siddanth walked back to his mark. He didn't just casually grip the ball. He deliberately placed his index and middle fingers slightly wider apart on the seam. As he bounded into his delivery stride, he consciously locked his wrist rigid, cocked slightly backward, angling it perfectly toward first slip. It was the flawless mechanical replication of the Anderson outswinger.

He delivered the ball on the exact same length as the previous delivery. It pitched on middle stump and moved away viciously late. Malik, trying to defend it into the off-side, managed only a faint outside edge. MS Dhoni took a safe catch.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ramiz Raja:"Oh, that is unplayable! Absolutely unplayable! Siddanth Deva brings out the outswinger, and Shoaib Malik has to go! What a magnificent piece of fast bowling. Pakistan is in tatters here!"

Sunil Gavaskar:"He is just reading the pitch beautifully, Ramiz. He isn't bowling express pace; he is letting the seam do the talking. The wrist position on that delivery was flawless."

The Pakistani middle order offered absolutely no resistance against the relentless Indian bowling cartel. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja squeezed the run rate, but it was Siddanth who returned in the 12th over to deliver the fatal blows.

11.2 Siddanth bowled a sharp, 142 kmph delivery that jagged back in sharply off the seam. Umar Akmal was beaten on the inside edge and trapped LBW.

11.5 Three balls later, Shahid Afridi tried to muscle a short ball over mid-wicket but was completely hurried by the bounce. He top-edged the ball, and Ravindra Jadeja took a brilliant, swirling catch near the boundary.

Siddanth finished his spell of four overs with devastating figures: 4 for 15.

The Pakistani tail collapsed shortly after. They were bowled out for a shocking, humiliating total of 83 runs in just 17.3 overs.

[COMMENTARY BOX - INNINGS BREAK]

Harsha Bhogle:"83 all out! An absolutely clinical, brutal demolition job by the Indian fast bowlers! Siddanth Deva was the chief destroyer with 4 for 15, but every single bowler hit their lengths perfectly. It is Pakistan's lowest ever total in T20 Internationals against India."

The digital world was already in a state of chaos.

[TWITTER TRENDS - #INDvPAK #SiddanthDeva #AsiaCup]

@PakCricketFan:83 RUNS?! Are we playing a World Cup or a gully cricket match?! This is embarrassing! Deva just ruined our entire batting lineup without even breaking a sweat. 😭🇵🇰

@BleedBlue_11:4 for 15! The Devil is hunting his favourite opponent! That outswinger to Malik was pure class! India is winning this in 10 overs! 🇮🇳🔥

@Shoaib100mph (Shoaib Akhtar):Terrible application by our batsmen. You cannot play Siddanth Deva from the crease on a green pitch. You have to move your feet. Total collapse. 💔

@TrollCricket:Pakistani batsmen walking back to the pavilion faster than I walk to the fridge at 3 AM. 🏃‍♂️💨 😂

@CricCrazyJohns:Siddanth Deva taking 4 wickets against Pakistan is inevitable. The man simply hates them. A target of 84 is a joke. Time for Rohit to hit a quick fifty! 🐐

[SECOND INNINGS - INDIA CHASE]

The target of 84 on a green pitch required cautious, sensible batting.

Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane walked out to the middle. The Indian camp was relaxed.

Mohammad Amir took the new white Kookaburra ball. The young Pakistani fast bowler had recently returned to international cricket after serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing. He was desperate to prove himself, and the green Mirpur pitch was his perfect canvas.

0.1 Amir steamed in. He delivered a fast, searing inswinger at 145 kmph. Rohit Sharma pushed at it tentatively. The ball swung viciously, missing the inside edge by a fraction of an inch and thudding into Sarfaraz Ahmed's gloves.

The Pakistani team went up in a massive appeal for LBW, but the umpire shook his head.

0.2 Amir adjusted his line slightly. He bowled an absolutely flawless, unplayable 146 kmph inswinging yorker.

Rohit Sharma's front foot was planted, but the ball was simply too fast and swung too late. It crashed directly onto his back pad, directly in front of the middle stump.

The umpire's finger went up instantly.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ramiz Raja:"GOT HIM! WHAT A DELIVERY! Mohammad Amir is back, ladies and gentlemen! An unplayable inswinging yorker! Rohit Sharma is gone for a duck! Pakistan has a glimmer of hope!"

The Pakistani supporters in the stadium erupted. The internet, previously gloating about an easy victory, was suddenly shaken.

Virat Kohli walked out to bat at number three. He took his guard, looking intensely focused.

0.3 Amir bowled a sharp length delivery on middle stump. Kohli immediately pushed it to mid-on and took off for a quick single, getting off the mark and giving the strike to Ajinkya Rahane.

Rahane, renowned for his solid technique, took his stance.

0.4 Amir steamed in again. He didn't bowl an inswinger. He bowled a heavy, 144 kmph length delivery that pitched on middle and off, and held its line perfectly.

Rahane, expecting the ball to swing back in like the delivery that dismissed Rohit, played completely down the wrong line.

The ball zipped past the outside edge and crashed into the off-stump, sending the bail flying.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Harsha Bhogle:"BOWLED HIM! AMIR HAS TWO IN THE OVER! This is sensational fast bowling! Ajinkya Rahane goes for a golden duck! The off-stump is knocked back! India is 2 for 2 chasing 84! This pitch is breathing fire!"

The Pakistani team swarmed Amir, celebrating wildly. The momentum had shifted violently in the space of four deliveries.

[TWITTER TRENDS - #MohammadAmir #Collapse #INDvPAK]

@PakCricketTalks:AMIR IS BACK! WHAT DID I TELL YOU?! DO NOT WRITE US OFF! 84 is a mountain on this pitch! Let's go boys! 🇵🇰🔥🔥

@CricketNerd99:What on earth is happening?! Rohit and Rahane both gone for ducks in the first over?! Amir is bowling thunderbolts! 😳📉

@AussieBanter:Haha! The Indians thought it was going to be a walk in the park! Amir is making that pitch look like a minefield! This is brilliant drama! 🍿🇦🇺

@Virat_Squad:Cheeku is out there. Just survive the over! Do not play any rash shots! The ball is swinging a mile! 😭🇮🇳

@BarmyArmy:Right, maybe 83 wasn't such a bad score after all. Mohammad Amir looks completely unplayable right now. Two wickets for 2 runs!

@TrollCricket:Indian fans 10 minutes ago: "We will win in 10 overs." Indian fans now: "Please Lord, just let us cross 10 runs." 🤡

@Im_A_Pak_Fan:Where are the Indian fans now?! Amir is eating your top order for breakfast! 84 runs is going to feel like 300 tonight! 🇵🇰❤️

@BleedBlue_11:This is terrifying. If Kohli gets out now, we are actually going to lose to Pakistan chasing 84. My heart rate is at 150. 💔

@SportsKeeda:An incredible, fiery opening over by Mohammad Amir. He has completely stunned the Indian dressing room. The chase is officially on! ⚡

@FanGirl_Sid:Okay, please don't panic everyone. The Devil is walking out. He will fix this. He always fixes this. 😭❤️ #CaptainDeva

The camera panned to the Indian dressing room.

Siddanth Deva walked down the concrete steps. The stadium, previously buzzing with Pakistani cheers, fell into a tense, expectant murmur.

Siddanth reached the middle of the pitch. He bumped gloves with Virat Kohli.

"He's swinging it late, Sid," Kohli warned, his eyes wide with adrenaline. "It's nipping back in sharply. Just watch the wrist."

"I see it, Cheeku," Siddanth replied, his voice completely deadpan. "I'll handle him."

Siddanth took his guard. The scoreboard read 2 for 2.

Mohammad Amir stood at the top of his mark. He was visibly hyped up, riding a wave of adrenaline. He had just dismissed two of India's best batsmen for ducks. He glared down the pitch at Siddanth, sensing blood.

Amir turned and began his explosive sprint toward the crease.

Siddanth didn't twitch.

[ACTIVATING SKILL: Chronos Stasis]

The roaring Mirpur stadium instantly plunged into absolute, deafening silence.

To Siddanth, the trajectory of Mohammad Amir's run-up slowed down to an agonizing crawl. He could see every individual muscle fiber in the bowler's shoulder tensing.

0.5 Amir leaped into his delivery stride and released the ball.

It was a 147 kmph delivery, pitched slightly fuller on the off-stump line. It was designed to swing back into the pads, exactly like the ball that trapped Rohit Sharma.

Because time was dilated to a near-standstill in his mind, Siddanth processed the wrist rotation immediately. He saw the seam position. He knew exactly where the ball was going to pitch and exactly how much it was going to swing.

Siddanth didn't try to defend it. He didn't try to just survive the over.

As the stasis broke and real-time resumed, Siddanth took a massive, confident stride forward, completely smothering the swing before the ball could deviate.

With unadulterated violence, he executed a flawless, lofted extra-cover drive.

The bat speed was terrifying. The ball rocketed off the sweet spot, cutting through the humid night air on a flat trajectory, and crashed directly into the advertising boards in the second tier of the stands.

[COMMENTARY BOX]

Harsha Bhogle:"SIX RUNS! WHAT A SHOT! WHAT A STATEMENT! He walks in at 2 for 2, facing a bowler who is on fire, and he launches his very first delivery over extra cover for a massive six! Siddanth Deva has announced his arrival!"

Ramiz Raja:"That is pure, unbelievable arrogance! Mohammad Amir is bowling 147 kilometers per hour, swinging it both ways, and Siddanth just steps out and hits him on the up! He didn't even look at where it landed!"

Virat Kohli, standing safely at the non-striker's end, went from intense, nervous focus to absolute disbelief. He literally dropped his jaw, making a massive "Ooooo" expression with his mouth, before shaking his head and bursting into laughter at the audacity of the shot.

Mohammad Amir didn't just stop in his follow-through. He kicked the green Mirpur turf in frustration, looking down at the pitch, his shoulders dropping instantly. He looked back at his captain, Shahid Afridi, in disbelief. The psychological high of his double-strike had been entirely shattered in a single delivery.

[TWITTER TRENDS - THE DEVIL STRIKES BACK]

@CricketNerd99:DID HE JUST HIT MOHAMMAD AMIR FOR A SIX ON THE UP ON HIS FIRST BALL?! AT 2 FOR 2?! I AM SCREAMING AT MY TV! THE DEVIL IS HERE! 🤯🔥

@VirenderSehwag:That is what you call absolute DOMINANCE! You don't survive a fiery spell; you destroy the bowler's confidence! Brilliant counter-attack by Sid! 👑🇮🇳

@PakCricketFan:Bro what the hell was that shot?! Amir is bowling magic and this guy just treats him like a net bowler?! That is illegal! 😭🇵🇰

@BarmyArmy:We've said it before and we'll say it again: Siddanth Deva is an absolute freak of nature. Hitting that over extra cover on this pitch is ridiculous. 👏

@BleedBlue_11:I AM NEVER DOUBTING HIM AGAIN! MY HEART RATE IS BACK TO NORMAL! THE KING AND THE DEVIL ARE AT THE CREASE! WE ARE WINNING THIS! 💙🇮🇳

@SportsKeeda:The audacity to play that shot on your first ball in an India-Pakistan match when your team is collapsing... Siddanth Deva's mentality is unmatched. 🧊

@CricCrazyJohns:Amir's face right now is priceless. He thought he was going to run through the whole team, and Siddanth just handed him a reality check. 🤫

@TrollCricket:Pakistani fans celebrating 10 seconds ago: 🥳. Pakistani fans after that six: 😶.

@FanGirl_Sid:I LITERALLY SCREAMED! HE IS SO COOL! Look at him tapping the pitch! He isn't even smiling! I LOVE HIM! ❤️🔥 #SiddanthDeva

The momentum of the match, which had swung so violently toward Pakistan, was instantly halted.

0.6 Amir, visibly rattled, bowled the final delivery of the over slightly short and wide. Siddanth comfortably let it go through to the keeper.

The first over concluded. India was 7 for 2.

The Pakistani captain, Shahid Afridi, gathered his team. They knew the threat Siddanth posed. Mohammad Sami was introduced from the other end.

Siddanth and Kohli immediately settled into a brilliant, unyielding rhythm. Having survived the initial shock, they recognized that the target of 84 didn't require reckless slogging.

They didn't give Mohammad Amir another chance to strike. When Amir pitched it up, they defended solidly. When he drifted onto the pads, they clipped him for singles.

3.4 Sami bowled a heavy length delivery. Kohli leaned forward and punched it exquisitely through the covers for a boundary.

4.1 Amir tried a slower bouncer. Siddanth picked it early, swiveled, and pulled it aggressively along the ground to the square-leg boundary for four.

The required run rate was less than three runs an over. The pressure was entirely on the Pakistani bowlers to force a mistake, but the Indian duo operated with precision.

[COMMENTARY BOX - THE REBUILD]

Sunil Gavaskar:"This is a masterclass in reading the game. After the initial wobble, Virat and Siddanth have completely taken the sting out of the Pakistani attack. They are picking up boundaries without taking any aerial risks."

Ramiz Raja:"Mohammad Amir bowled a brilliant opening spell, but he needed support from the other end. Sami and Irfan have been too erratic. Siddanth Deva's counter-attacking six in the first over completely disrupted Amir's rhythm."

By the 10th over, India had reached 52 for 2.

The Pakistani fielders looked deflated. The green pitch, which had offered so much assistance early on, was now being easily negotiated by the two best batsmen in the world.

In the 12th over, Wahab Riaz was brought into the attack.

11.2 Wahab banged it in short. Siddanth didn't duck. He rolled his wrists and executed a ferocious hook shot, sending the ball soaring over the fine-leg boundary for a massive six.

13.1 Kohli brought up the victory in style. He stepped down the track to Shoaib Malik and drove him beautifully down the ground for a boundary.

India chased down the target of 84 in just 15.3 overs, securing a dominant 8-wicket victory.

[COMMENTARY BOX - MATCH FINISH]

Harsha Bhogle:"FOUR RUNS! Virat Kohli finishes it off! India wins by 8 wickets! After a terrifying start where they lost Rohit and Rahane for ducks, Virat Kohli and Siddanth Deva have completely bossed this run chase! A brilliant 82-run partnership seals the game!"

Ramiz Raja:"It was a phenomenal comeback by India. Mohammad Amir was unplayable for four deliveries, but that one six from Siddanth Deva changed the entire psychological landscape of the match. A well-deserved victory for MS Dhoni's men."

Siddanth took his helmet off, offering a calm smile as he bumped gloves with Virat. They walked off the pitch together, acknowledging the cheers from the Indian crowd.

$$POST-MATCH PRESENTATION$$

The presentation stage was set up on the Mirpur outfield. The floodlights illuminated the green turf. Harsha Bhogle held the microphone.

Harsha Bhogle:"Ladies and gentlemen, a clinical victory for India. For an exceptional bowling performance of 4 for 15, and a crucial, momentum-shifting 35 not out, the Man of the Match is Siddanth Deva!"

Siddanth walked up to the podium, collecting the trophy.

Harsha Bhogle:"Siddanth, 4 for 15. You looked incredibly sharp with the ball today. The pitch had a lot of grass on it. Did you adapt your bowling style specifically for these conditions?"

"We did, Harsha," Siddanth replied, his tone analytical and grounded. "There was a lot of moisture and live grass. Raw pace wasn't necessary today. The plan was just to hit the deck hard and let the seam movement do the work. The ball to Shoaib Malik swung beautifully, but overall, it was a collective bowling effort. Bumrah and Nehra set the tone perfectly."

Harsha Bhogle:"Let's talk about the run chase. You walked in at 7 for 2. Mohammad Amir was bowling an unbelievable spell. And you hit your very first ball for a massive six over extra cover. Was that a pre-meditated shot to break his rhythm?"

Siddanth smiled slightly. "Amir was bowling a brilliant spell. He got two quick wickets with the inswinger. I knew he was going to pitch the ball up and look for swing again. I just trusted my instincts. I stepped forward to smother the swing, the ball was in my arc, and I went through with the shot. It's a small target, so we knew if we survived the first spell, we would win. Virat anchored beautifully at the other end."

Harsha Bhogle:"A fantastic all-round performance, Siddanth. Congratulations on the win."

"Thank you."

Siddanth walked back to the dressing room, the Man of the Match trophy in hand. The Asia Cup campaign was perfectly on track. The Pakistani threat had been neutralized with clinical precision.

The Devil of Cricket was exactly where he wanted to be.
