Siddanth Deva stood in the middle of the Wankhede pitch and tapped gloves with Virat Kohli.
The crowd was loud. The scoreboard showed 200 for 2 in the 32nd over. Rohit Sharma and Sanju Samson had built a strong platform. The next phase was just beginning.
"They are trying to bowl into the pitch," Kohli said, wiping sweat from his forehead. The Mumbai humidity was high. "Santner is firing it in flat, looking for the pads. Ferguson is hitting the deck hard."
"We don't let them settle," Deva replied. "We run hard, find the gaps and tire their outfielders. By the fortieth over they will have little left."
"Understood," Kohli nodded. He was on 70 and fully focused.
Deva took strike. Kane Williamson had set a defensive field, pushing the sweepers back to protect the boundaries against the new batsman.
Trent Boult came back into the attack looking for reverse swing. He bowled a sharp delivery angling across the right-hander.
Deva opened the face late and guided the ball past backward point. They ran a quick single.
In the next over Kohli stepped out to Mitchell Santner, met the ball early and pushed it into the mid-wicket gap.
"Two!" he called.
They ran hard, turned and completed the second before the deep fielder could release the throw.
Over the next several overs they rotated the strike with precision. They hit few boundaries. They did not need to. They turned ones into twos and kept the New Zealand fielders moving in the heat.
In the commentary box Ian Bishop spoke with clear appreciation.
"This is hard work for the fielding side," he said. "It is hot and humid. Every time the bowlers land a good ball, Kohli and Deva just work it into the leg side and run. They are stretching the fielders."
"It is excellent strike rotation," Nasser Hussain added. "Williamson pushed the field back when Deva came in. Deva looked at it and decided he did not need boundaries yet. He is taking the easy runs and feeding the strike to Kohli, who is looking dangerous."
Kohli was in rhythm. When Rachin Ravindra tossed one up, he leaned forward and drove it through the covers for four.
He moved into the nineties. The ground grew louder with every run.
In the 38th over Kohli clipped Lockie Ferguson off his pads for two and moved to 98.
Tim Southee returned. He bowled a tight line outside off. Kohli left it. On the fourth ball Southee drifted onto middle and leg.
Kohli shuffled across, rolled his wrists and flicked the ball through mid-wicket.
The crowd rose as soon as the ball left the bat.
Kohli completed the two runs, took off his helmet and roared, pumping his fists toward the stands. He dropped to his knees, kissed the pitch, then looked up.
It was his 51st ODI century, scored in a World Cup Semi-Final on home soil.
"A hundred for Virat Kohli!" Ravi Shastri said on the broadcast. "A fine century under pressure at the Wankhede. He has carried the innings again."
Deva walked down the pitch with a broad smile and pulled Kohli into a hug, slapping him on the back.
"Unbelievable knock, Cheeks," Deva said. "Flawless."
"We aren't done yet," Kohli replied, still breathing hard.
By this stage Deva was on 28 from 24 balls, content to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard moving.
In the VIP box Krithika stood and clapped. Aadhya was jumping and shouting. Rishi clapped politely. Anushka Sharma wiped her eyes.

The score moved past 285 for 2.
Kohli had his century. Deva was still building steadily.
The final ten overs were time to change gears.
Kane Williamson threw the ball to Trent Boult, hoping for a reverse-swinging yorker.
Boult ran in and aimed at the base of middle stump.
Deva stepped back, turned the yorker into a half-volley, cleared his front leg and swung through the line. The ball cleared the long-on boundary and landed in the second tier.
"He has flipped the switch," Ian Bishop said. "You cannot bowl a yorker when he stands deep in the crease. He turns it into a full toss and puts it away."
Boult's next ball was short outside off. Deva stood tall and flat-batted it straight back down the ground for four.
The acceleration had begun.
At the other end Kohli, tired after his long innings, tried to clear Mitchell Santner over mid-wicket in the 41st over. He did not quite get the elevation. Glenn Phillips settled under the catch in the deep.
"Caught," Harsha Bhogle said. "Virat Kohli falls for 117. A magnificent innings. He walks off to a full standing ovation."
Kohli raised his bat one last time and left the field. India 315 for 3.

Shreyas Iyer walked out to a big cheer and tapped gloves with his captain.
"Just get me on strike, Shreyas," Deva said. "No unnecessary risks against the spin. I'll handle the pace."
"Understood, Sid bhai," Iyer replied.
Deva continued the acceleration.
In the 42nd over, facing Lockie Ferguson, he reached his half-century. He stepped across his stumps and whipped a full delivery off his pads over deep square leg for six.
The screen flashed the milestone: **50 off 30 balls**.
"A fifty for the captain off 30 deliveries," Ravi Shastri said. "He was quiet for a while and now he has changed gears completely."

Deva continued to move the field around. When fine leg went back he sliced over backward point. When point dropped he drove straight.
Shreyas Iyer played the supporting role, taking singles and giving the strike back.
Tim Southee returned in the 47th over. Deva was on 88.
Southee bowled a slower off-cutter. Deva waited, stepped forward and lofted it over extra cover for six. He moved to 94.
The next ball was full on middle. Deva whipped it through mid-wicket for four and moved to 98.
Southee's final ball was a yorker at the base of off stump. Deva opened the face late and squeezed it past short third man for four.
The crowd erupted.
Siddanth Deva had reached his century off **62 balls**.
He stood in the middle, raised his bat once to the crowd, then looked up toward the VIP boxes and gave a single clear wave.
In the box Krithika wiped her eyes and clapped. Aadhya was red-faced from shouting and waving. Rishi gave a double thumbs-up.
"A century off 62 balls," Ian Bishop said. "He has taken the New Zealand attack apart in the middle and death overs. And that calm wave to the box."
"It is not wild hitting," Nasser Hussain added. "It is clean, orthodox stroke play with power and timing. He is reading the lengths early."

With the total past 380, the last three overs became a scramble for every run.
Shreyas Iyer tried to clear long-off against Mitchell Santner in the 48th over and was caught in the deep for a useful 15.
KL Rahul came in and attempted a big shot against Lockie Ferguson in the 49th over. The ball was full and fast; he inside-edged onto his stumps for 3.
Suryakumar Yadav sprinted out for the final deliveries. He scooped his first ball over fine leg for four and finished unbeaten on 8.
In the final over Deva faced Tim Southee again.
He hit a full ball over point for four, pulled a slower bouncer over mid-wicket for six, and drove a full toss straight back past the bowler. On the last ball he whipped a full delivery through square leg for four.
The innings ended.
Siddanth Deva walked off the pitch unbeaten on **144 from 79 balls**.
The scoreboard showed:
**India 420 for 5 (50 overs)**
The Indian players formed a guard of honour on the boundary. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid applauded. The Wankhede crowd stayed on its feet long after the players left the field.
