As the sun set over the Arabian Sea, the floodlights at the Wankhede Stadium came on. The humidity remained high and the sea breeze began to move across the ground.
The crowd of thirty-three thousand had not stopped singing since Siddanth Deva walked off. India had posted 420 for 5. The target for New Zealand was 421.
The evening breeze carried moisture across the pitch. For the new-ball bowlers these were good conditions. For the openers, the required rate of more than eight an over from the first ball was a difficult start.
Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra walked out. Their body language was tight. The Indian team followed them onto the field in a focused group. Virat Kohli clapped his hands. KL Rahul took his place behind the stumps.
Siddanth Deva walked to first slip and tossed the new white ball to Jasprit Bumrah.
The crowd roared as Bumrah marked his run-up.
Devon Conway took guard.
"Welcome back to the Wankhede for the second innings," Ravi Shastri said on the broadcast. "The lights are on. The sea breeze is across the ground. India have set 420. Jasprit Bumrah has the new ball. The chase begins."
Bumrah ran in. The crowd clapped with his steps.
He bowled a full delivery at 142 kmph aimed at middle stump. Conway pushed forward to defend.
The ball swung late and away. It beat the outside edge and went through to KL Rahul.
"Look at the shape on that," Ian Bishop said. "Pitched on middle and moved past the edge. Conway had no answer."
Bumrah bowled a tight opening over, hitting a hard length and giving no width. It was a maiden. The pressure of the large target was immediate.
Mohammed Shami took the ball from the Pavilion End for the second over.
Rachin Ravindra took guard.
Shami ran in with a smooth action. The seam stayed upright.
Shami bowled back of a length on the fourth-stump line. The ball hit the seam and moved away. Ravindra was beaten.
**Over 1.5**
Slightly fuller. A hint of late inswing forced Ravindra to defend off the inner half of the bat.
The pressure continued to build.
**Over 4.2**
Shami pitched a good-length ball on off stump. The ball held its line. Ravindra pushed hard at it without getting to the pitch. The outside edge flew low to first slip.
Siddanth Deva took the catch cleanly.
"Edged and taken," Nasser Hussain said. "Mohammed Shami strikes. Rachin Ravindra is gone."
New Zealand 14 for 1.
Kane Williamson walked out. He looked composed but the situation was clear.
At the other end Bumrah continued to attack Conway.
**Over 6.4**
Bumrah bowled a 144 kmph delivery aimed at the base of middle stump. Conway expected the ball to move away and planted his front foot across. Bumrah had bowled the inswinger. The ball tailed in and hit the pad.
The umpire raised his finger. Plumb LBW.
"Given," Harsha Bhogle said. "Jasprit Bumrah gets his man. Late inswing does the job. Both openers are gone and the required rate is climbing."
New Zealand 28 for 2.

**THE LIVING ROOM**
In a Ballygunge apartment in Kolkata, Mr. Chatterjee paced the living room in a white kurta pajama.
On the television Devon Conway was walking off.
His son Neel sat on the sofa eating chanachur.
"Baba, sit down," Neel said. "They are 28 for 2. We scored 420. The match is under control."
"Do not say that," Mr. Chatterjee replied. "Kane Williamson is at the crease. He does not panic. If he builds a partnership the chase can become interesting."
Riya brought in a tray of luchis and kosha mangsho.
"Baba, your blood pressure will rise if you keep stressing when we have a big lead," she said. "Eat something. Shami is bowling well."
"I cannot eat right now," Mr. Chatterjee said. "Williamson is looking calm."
"Baba," Neel said, dipping a luchi into the curry. "Do you think Siddanth Deva will let Williamson settle? When the swing stops he will bring on the spinners. Just watch."
Mr. Chatterjee looked at the screen, at the Indian captain standing in the slips. He sat down and took a plate.
"He is a sharp captain," he said. "Let us see how he handles the middle overs."
---
The early movement faded as the lacquer came off the ball. The pitch began to play more truly under the lights.
Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell realised they had to rotate the strike and find boundaries if the target was to remain realistic.
Siddanth Deva took the fast bowlers off and brought on Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.
Williamson played the spin well. He waited for the ball, used soft hands and worked it into the gaps. When Kuldeep tossed it up, Williamson rocked back and guided it past short third man for four. Against Jadeja's flat trajectory he used his feet and pushed singles.
Daryl Mitchell played the more aggressive role, sweeping Kuldeep occasionally and finding the boundary.
The partnership grew steadily. They kept the scoreboard moving without taking large risks.
"This is a fine display of playing spin from Kane Williamson," Ricky Ponting said. "He lets the ball come to him and uses the turn. He has neutralised Jadeja's pace so far."
"It is a solid recovery," Ian Bishop added. "From 28 for 2 they have built a useful stand. The required rate is still high, but if they are there in the later overs they have the lower order to make it interesting."
"Deva will be watching this," Ravi Shastri said. "The spinners have not broken through. He may need a change."
The score moved past 80, then 90. The crowd grew a little quieter.
At the end of the 18th over New Zealand were 94 for 2. Williamson was on 42.
Deva stood at mid-off, looked at the scoreboard, then took his cap off and handed it to the umpire.
The crowd recognised the change and roared. The captain was bringing himself on.
"Here comes the change," Nasser Hussain said. "Siddanth Deva brings himself into the attack. Williamson versus Deva."
**19th over**
Deva marked his run-up. He moved the field carefully: deep square leg back, point adjusted, and extra cover brought inside the circle, leaving a clear gap on the cover boundary.
Williamson watched the field.
Deva bowled a tight line outside off on a good length. The ball held its line. Williamson left it.
He bowled six similar deliveries at around 138 kmph. Williamson defended three and left three. It was a maiden.
In the Kolkata living room Mr. Chatterjee leaned forward.
"Look at the field," he said. "He has left the cover boundary open. He wants Williamson to drive."
"Williamson is too experienced to take the bait straight away," Neel replied.
"That is the point. A maiden over. The rate climbs. The open gap sits there. It is a test of patience."
**21st over**
Daryl Mitchell was on strike. Deva changed his approach, rolling his fingers over the ball and bowling two off-cutters that gripped. Mitchell missed both. The over cost only two runs.
The required rate moved past 9.5.
**23rd over**
Williamson was on 48 and looking for his fifty. The gap at extra cover remained open.
Deva ran in.
First ball: outswinger, full, left alone. Dot.
Second ball: same line, defended to mid-off. Dot.
Third ball: slightly wider. Williamson checked the shot and pulled the bat away. Dot.
The ground was quiet.
Deva ran in for the fourth ball. The action looked the same as the previous outswingers.
Williamson saw the full length just outside off and the open cover boundary. He committed to the drive.
The ball did not leave him. It gripped and nipped back. Williamson was already committed. The ball beat the inside edge and hit the front pad in front of middle and off.
Deva appealed the moment the ball hit the pad. The umpire's finger went up.
Kane Williamson stood for a second, then tucked his bat under his arm and began the walk back, after looking at Mitchell who shook his head.
As the Wankhede erupted, Siddanth turned toward the VIP boxes high above the stands, raised his right hand, and slowly traced the letter **R** in the air with his index finger.
Up in the box, Rishi's eyes widened. For a moment the five-year-old just stared. Then a huge smile spread across his face. He lifted his own hand and carefully traced the S letter back toward the field.
Aadhya, who had been jumping and shouting, suddenly stopped and tugged at her mother's saree.
"Amma! Nana is writing R! That's for Rishi!"
Krithika laughed softly, one hand on Rishi's shoulder. She looked down at her son, then back at her husband on the field, and nodded once.
In the commentary box the realisation landed almost at the same time.
"And just look at that," Ian Bishop said. "Siddanth Deva has taken his 23rd wicket of the tournament. That moves him clear at the top of the bowling charts. And earlier he was already the leading run-scorer. Top run-scorer and top wicket-taker in the same World Cup. Only he can do it."
"He's pointing up to the box as well," Harsha Bhogle added. "A quiet message to the family."
On the field Deva lowered his hand, accepted the congratulations from his teammates, and walked back to his mark. The scoreboard showed New Zealand 103 for 3. The leading run-scorer and leading wicket-taker of the tournament was still in the middle of his work.
**25th over**
Tom Latham came in. Deva allowed a single to bring Daryl Mitchell on strike.
Deva ran in and bowled a full, fast yorker at 155 kmph that tailed in late. Mitchell could not get his bat down in time. The ball hit the base of middle stump and knocked it out of the ground.
"Bowled him," Ravi Shastri said. "A reverse-swinging yorker. Daryl Mitchell is gone. Deva has removed both set batsmen."
New Zealand 107 for 4.
Deva had figures of 2 for 14 from four overs. He took himself out of the attack and handed the ball back to the spinners.
---
With Williamson and Mitchell gone, the middle and lower order struggled against the required rate and the accurate Indian bowling.
Jadeja and Kuldeep returned.
Jadeja bowled Tom Latham with a delivery that skidded on. In his next over he trapped Glenn Phillips LBW with an arm-ball.
Kuldeep tossed one up to Mark Chapman. The ball drifted and dipped. Chapman missed and was stumped by KL Rahul.
The score fell from 107 for 4 to 145 for 7.
Mohammed Shami returned. He had Mitchell Santner caught at slip off a rising ball and then bowled Tim Southee. Shami finished with three wickets.
The crowd turned on their phone lights. The chants grew louder.
**Over 38.4**
Jasprit Bumrah bowled to Trent Boult. He delivered a fast yorker. Boult missed. The ball hit the pad. The umpire raised his finger. Plumb LBW.
New Zealand were all out for 172.
India had won by 248 runs and advanced to the World Cup Final.
The Indian players came together on the pitch. Siddanth Deva walked across to Kane Williamson near the boundary. The two captains shook hands and exchanged a few quiet words.
"You set a very good total, Sid" Williamson said. "And the ball that got me was well planned."
"You made us work for twenty overs, Kane" Deva replied. "Safe travels."
Deva looked up toward the VIP box where Krithika, Aadhya and Rishi were standing and waving. He raised a hand in acknowledgement.

@CricketNerd_IND: Now the question is who meets India in the Final. Australia have the experience. South Africa have the batting firepower. This one could go either way.
@CricStatsLive: Australia's bowling depth looks strong for a knockout. South Africa's top order has been explosive all tournament. Toss and conditions will matter a lot.
@EnglishCricketView: Australia have a habit of finding a way in World Cups. South Africa will feel this is their best chance in years. Fascinating match-up.

Australia: "We have Cummins, Starc, Hazelwood."
South Africa: "We have de Kock, Markram, Klaasen, Miller."
India fans: "We'll take whoever." 😂
@PaceBowlingFan: If the ball swings, Australia's attack looks dangerous. If it's a good batting surface, South Africa's middle order can post a huge total.
@CricCrazyJohn: Leaning slightly toward Australia because of their knockout pedigree, but South Africa have looked more consistent with the bat this tournament.
@SarcasticDesi: Prediction: the winner of Aus vs SA will arrive in Ahmedabad very confident… and then see India's bowling attack.
@The_Master_Architect: One more game. Then the Final. Ready. 🏟️
