Chapter 12 - better times

As the swordsman, now bloodied, looking like a demon, tried to drag him to hell, running with the knife in his mouth, Noah's vision went blank.

He was suddenly transported into what seemed to be a familiar home. It glowed orange due to the nostalgia from childhood.

He looked to his left and saw his father, tending to the firewood, unable to get a clear glimpse of his face. It just seemed like a blank spot he couldn't understand.

Like something was blocking it from his vision. he tried to imagine or remember what it looked like but nothing worked. feeling around, he saw that he was in the dining room, sitting in one of the chairs.

"Hey!!" A voice full of joy an whimsy chimed from across the table. Looking directly in front of him, he saw his little brother, no more than five years of age, his eyes almost glowing with how adorable they were.

"What is it?" Noah said, his brows scrunched.

to be honest he was still a bit confused, but the more he looked around, he saw portraits of older family members and realized he was in the old family home.

"since it's confirmed that me and you are the only mana users in the entire village, are we like, heroes now?" Daniel said, leaning in.

"What? No. We still have-" "yeah yeah,we don't know how strong we are but I know we can protect the village. And if we're lucky, leave home and train at a magical school."

"Oh and where did you hear of all this young man?" A much older, wiser and feminine voice came from behind him. David closed his eyes slowly before slowly putting his head on the table.

Noah smiled, taking his chance. "It was probably those girls he talks to while playing outside feeding him these fantasies"

The mother of the two walked in.

They got her hair, but not her blue eyes.

And from the looks of it she came in with a few scratches. She put her staff that had a tiny blue crystal to the side and sat at the table.

"As far as I'm concerned, before you beat back any nefarious criminals, you have to first defeat your messy bedroom."

"Yeah, focus on real priorities" Noah said chuckling mid sentence, one hand over his mouth.

But his mother went from her tiredness to jumping out of her chair to Daniel . Wrapping her arms around him. Noah didn't know how to feel.

On one hand his mother seemed to be physically fine, but odds are she wanted to hug him earlier but just couldn't find the strength to get up.

"You'll see mom." Daniel said with determination. Nothing will stop me from protecting you, Noah, the village, the whole kingdom!"

"That's so sweet of you" she replied tightening the hug. "Nothing will stop my boy. And what of you Noah"

"He'll be my squire, fetching me things and shining my armor" Daniel immediately took the chance to make fun when he could.

their mom was about to tell him not to say such things, yet only laughter escaped her lips. Noah's reaction to this most generous job offer was to make the "grumpy face" and he instead looked like he was about to cry, being only seven and all.

"As your big brother, when you inevitably do something stupid on whatever journey you wish to take, I'll bail you out" Noah tried taking the high road.

Buuuut Daniel wasn't going for it.

"So you want to leach off me"

another argument continues in the dining room, making it more lively than ever.

Once dinner was eaten and everyone was heading to the respective room they resided in, Noah's mother stopped him. As he watched Daniel go to their shared room, tired, eyes drooping, his mom spun him around and kissed him on the forehead.

"I know he will make mistakes. As his older sibling I need you to watch over him when I cannot. Whatever journey he's in I know you will play a part. You're fates are connected."

"Noah asked, what are you talking about mom? When will you be leaving"

Noah mom shook her head. Maybe she should have these conversations when he isn't seven.
