Chapter 5 - The Crown Beneath the Coral

Coastal Cavern – Near Azure Sky Sea

The tide had pulled back unnaturally, revealing a slick pathway of wet stone and coral. Feng Xian gripped the broken conch compass tightly, its soft humming leading him deeper into the exposed reef bed.

Mist curled along the cavern walls, whispering strange echoes—like chanting in reverse.

"This compass… it's not just pointing the way," he muttered.

"It's resonating."

Behind him, Yue Lain adjusted the ribbon around her blade. Her eyes narrowed at the glowing coral patterns that lit the cave walls.

"This place wasn't meant to be uncovered so soon."

Suddenly, the compass shattered in Feng Xian's palm. A glowing sigil—a spiraled pearl within a crescent—flashed briefly in the air, before sinking into the floor.

A section of coral slid aside with a grinding groan, revealing a circular chamber bathed in sapphire light.

The Chamber of the Crown

At its center stood a pedestal of living reef, atop which floated a crown of woven coral and moon pearls, gently spinning in a globe of water suspended midair.

The Coral Maiden's Crown.

But the moment Feng Xian stepped forward, a chilling voice rang out.

"Step away from the legacy, flame born."

Shui Meixiu emerged from a veil of water mist, her crescent staff held diagonally across her body. Behind her, Hai Tonga followed, unfurling a scroll sealed with tidal runes.

"This sacred relic belongs to the Tide woven Pavilion," she said.

"You've no right to approach it—especially not with fire in your veins."

Feng Xian raised a hand, palm open.

"I didn't come to steal. Something brought me here—some tie I don't understand yet. The legacy responded to me."

"It responded because your presence is disturbing its slumber," Meixiu snapped. "You think everything stirs to serve your flame?"

Without warning, the chamber trembled.

The floating crown began to spiral wildly—its light pulsing with defensive qi. The coral beneath cracked open, releasing a sudden shockwave of brine and spiritual force that knocked everyone back.

Then, from beneath the platform, something moved.

A spirit-beast, long and coiled like a reef serpent but cloaked in tide-mist and ancient barnacles, uncurled its massive form. One eye was missing; the other shimmered with watery moonlight.

It roared, and the water in the chamber rose as if pulled by its breath.

Battle Erupts

Meixiu leapt first, her crescent staff slicing a vortex through the air that split the incoming wave.

Feng Xian summoned his inner flame—but it sputtered under the chamber's saturation of water essence.

"No… the flame's too wild here. I'll drown myself if I push it."

He shifted instead, letting his Beast borne instincts take hold. His pupils narrowed, claws lengthened slightly, and his stance shifted to something more primal.

He moved with the tide, not against it.

Together—though unspoken—he and Meixiu danced around the serpent, their styles clashing but complementing. Water curved where flame would strike, and his ferocity filled the gaps in her elegance.

Yue Lain, from above, sealed the chamber with a blade-shaped barrier, preventing the spirit beast from escaping into the reef system.

Aftermath

The serpent, wounded and calmed, sank back into the pool.

The crown dimmed, its test complete.

Meixiu turned to Feng Xian—no longer with disdain, but wariness laced with curiosity.

"You fought like water… yet burned like fire. Who taught you that?"

Feng Xian wiped seawater from his brow.

"No one. I just listened to the flow."

Meixiu studied him for a moment, then turned.

"The Pavilion may not kill you after all."

But behind them, Hai Tonga frowned. His seal scrolls had revealed something strange during the battle—something buried beneath the reef, older than the Pavilion itself.

"What sleeps deeper than the Crown?"

And far below, in the coldest trench of the sea, the Dark Tide Cult awakened their ancient god.
