Chapter 22 - the cloaked figure

.

What felt like hours later, the shopping was finally over, or so I had originally thought. When I saw my big sister coming to me, I assumed she was on her way to tell me that it was time to go home. Unfortunately, my assumptions got closed when I saw her walking slowly in my direction. As she put the shopping bags down, they made a loud thud with how heavy they were. What was in those things? And as luck would have it, curiosity got the best of me as I bent down to take a peep in the bag.

"Huh, that's strange. There seem to be a few things in the bag that don't belong," I muttered softly to myself in the hopes my big sister wouldn't hear my words.

And look, I know I shouldn't be snooping in the bag—we're family, after all. I'm sure Big Sis wouldn't mind me taking a little closure investigation by rummaging through the bag because there's no way a few shopping items could make a bag so heavy, and the real question is, where did she get the strength to carry those bags all the way here? What made it worse is they were a group of clear plastic bags, so it must've been hard to carry them without having the straps burst on you out of nowhere, but then again, this is a magic world; anything here is magic and has some kind of ability. It wouldn't be shocking if these bags came with that; they look simple but strong, so I guess that's a cool thing, right?

Hmm, there seems to be a lot of stuff, like milk, meats, and fish flour sugar salt canned items curtain rods extra clothing some cloth and materials lamp oil cooking oil a new microwave a pack of bird seed some soap perfume body spray and this cant be real i never seen such this thing before no matter how many times i was sent shopping back in my old life the strange item was long shaped like cucumber with some black buttons on it the long cucumber shaped thingy had a light purple color with a black bottom and when you press one of the buttons it makes this vibrating noise maybe its some kind of back massager i mean it does feel really good on my back nice and massaged but for some strangereason the people who were passing by kept ogling at with such wide eyes did i do somthing wrong for them to stare at me like i did somthing bad?

As if it wasn't enough of a sign, I quickly stuffed the item along with the other contents in the bag while taking a few short breaths before leaning against a wooden pole that held one of the nearby market tents up. The market was busy, and there was nowhere to take a seat and wait for anyone. That's one of the few things I'll always miss about the world I used to live in back then when I used to hang out with my childhood friends, and yes, I may have been a loner in high school, but I did grow up with two of the best friends in the world. It's such a shame we went our own separate ways, but that didn't stop any of us from meeting each other at the mall on weekends when the weather was perfect and we were all free of homework, six-week tests, and assignments. That was the life when I used to sit and wait for my friends to come back with food by the courting area.

It's such a shame I can't get the same experience here... Oh well, look on the bright side of things: if life in this world was remotely similar to my past, then it wouldn't be so interesting, fun, or wild. Mysteries have yet to be found, and more secrets are yet to be uncovered, and let's not forget the magic artifact scrolls. That's all I know so far.

"Mnnn, Big Sister is taking awfully long to get back. I wonder what's taking her so long; it's making me anxious not knowing where she is... Am I crazy for feeling this way? She's technically not my real sister, and I've only known her for two and a half days, but I still feel this irreplaceable bond taking over. This has to be the reaction of the previous owner's body colliding with my emotions. Why am I caught in a huge knot? Maybe I should go for a little walk to clear my head a little before I start developing some other weird feelings.

I quickly walked down the street, making sure to place some landmarks on each wooden pole so I don't get lost.

I finally found a nice, quiet, and slightly dim place to process my thoughts. This was a small, dark alleyway; I was sure no one would come near because of the risk it might pose of getting kidnapped or possibly killed. And despite the vow I made not to gamble my life away if I survived the night at the hospital, I was on my knees begging God I'd never knock on death's door again. if he saved my ass one more time. And boy, do I never learn my lesson.

"Hey, you little girl, you shouldn't be out in a cold, dark place like this...where are your parents, young one? A gruff, heavy voice spoke as a cloaked figure came out of nowhere."

I was startled at that, as I assumed I'd be the only one here, and how did this man just appear out of nowhere? And more importantly, what should I do... make a run for it? But if I do, I'll end up getting chased and killed. I've seen how those horror novels always start killing off the side characters in their own story, but then how was I going to escape? Because I didn't know who this man was, and his presence spoke danger, I couldn't get a good glimpse of his face to get a guess of how old this man was.

The cloaked man gave a small chuckle while turning to face me; his smile instantly vanished and was now replaced with a cold stare as he spoke.

"I can tell you're scared and you don't have to be little one I'm not going to hurt you what kind of person what that make me if I could attack such a small fragile and quite shy beautiful girl I won't do any evil to you I'm not a bad man or so everyone thinks the opposite of me the only thing I really want to do here with you is just have a small conversation if you're open for a little chat because there's something I want to ask you it might seem quite strange because I have a lot of people who I can ask but they wouldn't tell me the truth because they're scared of me and rightfully so if they cross me I'll behead them and chop their bodies into pieces and feed them to my pet beast but enough about that you seem like a sensible person enough to answer my question now if you were a parent and you accidentally killed one of your own what would you do if everyone is turning heads against you and raising odds underneath you what would you do if people were asking questioning you know it's your fault and your own daughter died at your own hands what would you do to save face of your own reputation you will over a kingdom of people but they can't know the truth because then if they do they won't hesitate to dethrone you you don't have to give me a detail answer I just want to know what would you do in such a situation?"

I was left stunned at the words that came out of this man's mouth. Who the hell would I ask somebody that? But I couldn't let it show how much this question bothered me and how much this guy creeped me out. Who knows what he'll do to me, so I'll give him an honest answer, and I did that by holding my head high with a brave smile. Well, sir, if I were that person, then I would try to find somebody who looks like the young girl; only then can I keep the secret about killing my own daughter. While keeping my reputation clean, it's just that simple. I hope you like the answer I gave you since I couldn't really think of anything on the spot for that question because it's not every day someone asks you that. And, huh, where did he go? the man mysteriously vanished out of thin air I never got to hear what he thought of the answer or why he asked me that, but it's not my problem anymore. Better to stay away from creeps like that in the future, and to be honest, the only thing I'm grateful for right now is that he didn't hurt me, but I still feel shaken up. But what just happened?
