Chapter 32 - Breaking the Shackles

Flames leapt and twisted, and the red-kimonoed Ryougi Shiki stood amid the burning light.

Her brilliant eyes glimmered under the firelight. She raised her long blade at a slight angle, instinctively wanting to check Violet's condition—only to realize the girl had already slipped into the shadows cast by the dim, broken lights.

Eight enemy vehicles. Estimated over forty men. Heavy weapons confirmed.

There was no choice but to fight.

Shiki dashed forward. Under these conditions, she had no other options. On this long, empty road with nowhere to hide, once surrounded, even her enhanced body wouldn't be able to avoid a sealed barrage of fire.

As she ran, her blade skimmed over the faint lines on the ground.

The earth shattered in an instant—a wide section of reinforced concrete crumbling like brittle chips beneath her sword.

The pursuing cars hit the ruined section and were forced to slow.

At that moment, a small figure shot through the window of the first vehicle. In the brief instant she passed through, her dagger slit the driver's throat, and she snatched a submachine gun before landing. Her movements were so fast she wasn't even splashed by the spurting blood.

Boom—!

With the driver dead, the car lurched violently and flipped on the broken road, crashing heavily—and conveniently blocking the path of the cars behind it.

Shiki kept her peripheral vision on the situation at all times.

They can be killed.

She suddenly twisted her body, leaping sideways like a launched projectile to avoid possible gunfire.Ten meters was barely a breath to her.

A man stepping out with a machine gun didn't even have time to react. Her blade glided gently across his neck.

Death.

As if his soul were extinguished in an instant, with not even a moment of struggle.

"So easy."

Joy flickered in Shiki's eyes.

A vague image of a young boy flashed across her mind—but then shattered like broken chains.

Her first kill had thrown her life into immediate danger, tightening her nerves and filling her with a trembling exhilaration. Only this thrill—this intoxicating clarity—could free her from the prison of past memories. Only in this moment could she truly feel that this small life belonged to her.

Bang bang bang!

Gunfire erupted as Shiki swung her blade.

Relying on her small frame and agile leaps, Violet began her own silent hunt.

Machine guns, knives, even fingers and knees—in this dimly lit night, illuminated only by fire, ordinary people couldn't even track Violet's movements. They fired blindly, only to be cut down one by one.

There were no screams.Other than gunfire and the sound of breaking metal, the battlefield was deathly quiet.

These were soulless soldiers—walking corpses. They felt no fear of death.

Something's wrong.

Just as the thought crossed Shiki's mind, pale violet smoke abruptly spread through the air.

A single breath was enough to leave her dizzy.

This attack had been planned from the start. The enemy knew Shiki and Violet's strength. The earlier wave of easy kills had been nothing more than bait, drawing the two into this smoke-filled trap.

The real killing blow was only now arriving.

Shiki flipped her blade and drew it across her own forehead, a gentle touch—her mind snapped into clarity.

She killed the "death" within her.

"Violet!"

She shouted loudly.

But there was no reply. The battlefield blanketed in purple smoke had knocked out even the enemy soldiers—they were nothing more than disposable pawns.

She had to find Violet.

Shiki's eyes swept the surroundings. With her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, everything possessed cracks—concepts, air, and of course, this purple knockout smoke.

A simple wave of her blade, and the smoke around her dispersed.

She's been captured.

Shiki quickened her pace. She had to find Violet before reinforcements arrived.

Just as she moved—A heavy fist tore through the air and slammed into her left shoulder. Her body spun like a butterfly caught in a storm and crashed onto the roof of a nearby car.

Numbness.Immobilized.And then waves of sharp, crushing pain.

Her not-yet-fully-healed left shoulder was damaged again.

"New enemy."

Expression emotionless, Shiki stood up. Her left arm hung limp at her side.

From the purple smoke emerged a masked man with a metal arm.

In his other hand—Violet, unconscious.

"So you targeted the two of us when we were separated?" Shiki lifted her blade with her right hand, the air whining as it cut through. "Being underestimated like this is really irritating. Prepare to die."

She leapt, her blade slicing through the darkness like lightning. Reflected in the man's eyes, it looked like a stroke of death. He dropped Violet and retreated with superhuman agility. Intelligence had stated the girl's attacks could destroy anything. He just didn't understand how she was still conscious through the knockout smoke.

"How sloppy."

Missing the first strike, Shiki didn't hesitate for even a heartbeat.

Her movements accelerated, sword strokes weaving together into a continuous storm. The air distorted, smoke and dust swept aside. Winds began forming around her from the force alone.

Shiki—having broken her inner shackles—fully merged her hard-earned swordsmanship with her instinctive decisiveness.

Under this relentless onslaught, the man had no chance to counterattack.Even his metal arm couldn't risk taking a direct hit.

"Requesting backup," he said flatly. No emotion in his eyes.

But calculations told him his odds of winning were extremely low.

Farther down the road, headlights began appearing—front and back. Reinforcements were arriving.

Shiki steadied her breath. She inhaled deeply. Her blade accelerated sharply, slicing in a clean upward arc at the man's neck.

Swish!

It was like cutting through tofu.

The metal arm he raised to block was cleanly sliced apart, falling into scattered pieces.

"Tsk."

Shiki clicked her tongue, annoyed, unwilling to waste more time.

She bit the sword's hilt between her teeth, lifted the small Violet with her one functioning arm, and sprinted toward the nearby sea.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, Shen He was chatting with Dr. Helen—but he couldn't shake a faint sense of unease.

Helen was beautiful, with a graceful figure, talented, gentle yet composed. Shen He admitted he was somewhat moved. If he had met such a woman before he transmigrated, he would've definitely tried pursuing her.

But now…There was a subtle distance he couldn't ignore—something that kept him from fully enjoying the conversation with her.

"Sorry," Shen He finally stood up. "I need to make a phone call."
