Chapter 1 - Ch 0…the bad news

Alex ..pov

I was deep in the middle of a case, sorting through paperwork when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I glanced at the screen—an unfamiliar number. I hesitated for a moment before answering, and when I did, the words that followed hit me like a lightning bolt.

"Your sister... your sister passed away in a car accident with her husband two days ago."

Time seemed to freeze. I couldn't process what I was hearing. My sister, the only family I had, whom I hadn't seen in four years, was gone. There was a brief silence before the voice continued, trembling slightly.

" She left behind a little girl, only eight years old."

Those words crushed me. My sister was gone, and I was suddenly faced with the reality of the small girl she had left behind. The voice spoke again, this time with an added weight:

" And she left a single will for you. Take care of her daughter."

Everything stopped. The world felt as though it had shifted on its axis. My sister was no longer here, and I was now responsible for her child—someone I hardly knew. How could I possibly step into her shoes and fill the void she left behind?
